The creators consider this a "format spinoff," where the only thing carried over is the show's central premise (a character in the future tells their kids about their misadventures from their late twenties-early thirties, prior to finding "the one." Most everything else is new and different. This is similar to what the CSI, NCIS, and Star Trek franchises do, as well as shows like Parks & Recreation (essentially a format spinoff of "The Office").
