Do Patti (Two Cards) is a film with an identity crisis, in that neither director Shashanka Chaturvedi nor writer/co-producer Kanika Dhillon seem to be entirely sure of its primary instinct.
Is it a twisted tale of identical twins, one good and one bad? Or is it one more hill station mystery? (For some reason, streaming platforms seem enamored with these — think of Netflix’s Aranyak or Mrs. Serial Killer, Voot’s Candy or ZEE5’s Rautu Ka Raaz. Perhaps the hope is that the beauteous mountain views will distract from the bumpy storytelling.)
Is this an impassioned plea against domestic violence, or a courtroom drama in which it’s difficult to decide who played whom? Is it an exploration of the nature of justice, and of whether the letter of the law or the spirit of the law is more important?
Do Patti attempts to be all of these,...

Back in the day, crime dramas usually used to have corrupt cops. And even if the protagonist was a member of any law enforcement authority, they used to punch up instead of down. In case you’ve forgotten due to the Singham franchise’s recent trashy entries, the first one was actually about catching a corrupt politician, not doing the bidding of one. While movies like Ugly, Raman Raghav 2.0, Paan Singh Tomar, and Sonchiriya tried to show the real face of the law, films like Talaash, Mardaani (and its sequel), Raees, Dabangg (the entire trilogy), Murder Mubarak, Rautu ka Raaz, Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, Delhi Crime, and even the highly revered Article 15 kept portraying the police as the bastion of justice and righteousness. That said, slowly but steadily, directors and writers are starting to realize again that maybe celebrating the khaki uniform isn’t a good idea because it has some real-life consequences.

Zee5 Global has been churning out many new Hindi and regional movies and shows tackling various subjects that diverge from cliché storytelling. Just a while back, the Telugu show Paruvu tackled the topic of the caste system. The Hindi romantic movie Luv Ki Arranged Marriage was about letting parents have a moment of love. Rautu Ka Raaz is another investigative thriller from Hindi cinema, directed by Anand Surapur. The movie was released on June 28, 2024, on Zee5 Global.
Rautu Ka Raaz has a runtime of less than two-hours, which is commendable. Many movies, especially in Hindi cinema, tend to cross the two-hour mark with nothing to offer to keep you there. Rautu Ka Raaz is a simple film set in the hills of Uttarakhand, where a murder has taken place inside a school for the blind. The warden Sangeeta Devi is found dead, and it sends shockwaves and a sense of terror through the small town.
