Margaret Glaspy, Devotion ****
Caroline Rose, Superstar, ***1/2
Margaret Glaspy’s second album begins with a brief jolt of vocoder that recalls the statement-making opening to “Oh, What a World,” a highlight from Kacey Musgraves’ 2018 album Golden Hour. Musgraves’ synth-country blockbuster provided a template for how roots-based songwriters can strive for modern pop ambition without sacrificing songcraft.
Devotion, the latest from New York singer-songwriter Glaspy, is one of the most fully-formed efforts to come out in the wake of Golden Hour. Glaspy doesn’t tear down so much expand and build upon...

Thanks to some stronger-than-expected performances, this weekend ended up better than Mojo's forecast and yet, this is still the worst three-day Labor Day weekend in twelve years. The top twelve grossed a combined $51.5 million and you have to go back to 2000, when the top twelve grossed a combined $47 million, to find a worse performance. That said, both The Hitman's Bodyguard and Annabelle: Creation delivered strong performances to top the weekend. In fact, only four films in the top ten saw any kind of drop compared to last weekend and those drops were minimal with Annabelle's 5% drop being the largest within the top ten. Unfortunately the weekend's new releases didn't make much of a dent with Lionsgate's Hazlo Como Hombre and Weinstein's Tulip Fever failing to crack the top twenty. Lionsgate's The Hitman's Bodyguard finished atop the weekend chart for a third straight weekend in a row with an estimated $10.25 million.

Saturday Am Update: With an estimated $2.4 million, The Hitman's Bodyguard topped Friday's box office on its way to a third straight weekend at #1, looking to deliver nearly $9.5 million for the three-day and nearly $12 million for the four-day holiday. Annabelle: Creation falls into second place with $1.8 million on Friday, heading toward a $6.8 million three-day and the Weinstein's Wind River delivered an estimated $1.5 million on Friday and is looking at a three-day around $5.5-6 million. As for the weekend's new releases, Sony's re-release of Close Encounters of the Third Kind brought in an estimated $485k and is looking at a solid $1.6 million for the three-day, likely to find a spot in the top twelve. The Weinstein's Tulip Fever brought in an estimated $357k and is looking at a three-day around $1.2 million and Lionsgate's Hazlo Como Hombre is falling well short of our forecast after bringing in an estimated $347k on Friday, headed toward a three-day around $1.2 million.

Always at the forefront of the most innovative titles in independent film, producing partners Amanda Marshall and Miranda Bailey have supported the artists behind singular projects like “Swiss Army Man” and “The Diary of a Teenager Girl,” among countless others. Their latest production, “I Do…Until I Don’t” unites them with multitalented creator Lake Bell, who wrote, directed, and starred in the new comedy about the perils of marriage.
Recently, Marshall and Bailey’s creative relationship shifted as the latter embarked on two projects in the director’s chair: The Pathological Optimist and You Can Choose Your Family. In this new dynamic, their seasoned rapport is an invaluable asset, especially when considering that their approach to producing is hands-on.

"I feel very proud to put something out there that is kind-spirited." Lake Bell has a new movie hitting theaters this week and it's worth a watch whenever you have the time. Many people know Lake Bell as an actress, from shows like "Boston Legal" and "How to Make It in America" and movies like Million Dollar Arm, What Happens in Vegas, and Man Up. But Lake is also a talented filmmaker, writing and directing original feature films. Her feature directorial debut, In a World..., a charming comedy about voice-over actors, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013. She has followed that up with a romantic comedy titled I Do... Until I Don't about marriage that is opening in theaters soon. Lake stars in I Do... Until I Don't as one of the lead characters, and she also produced, wrote & directed it, which is an impressive feat. I have been...

Well “Sense8” fans, Netflix listened. They listened to your petitions, and maybe they even listened to at least one humble article about why ending the series after Season 2 wasn’t a great idea.

Via a letter posted on Twitter by the official “Sense8” account, creator Lana Wachowski announced Netflix had agreed to greenlight a new two-hour special that will wrap up the “Sense8” story in 2018.
This is huge news, given the storylines left unresolved. Until today, it seemed likely that current fans as well as future Netflix subscribers who might discover the show would be left with an unsatisfying cliffhanger as the final moments of “Sense8.”
It’s something Wachowski fully attributes to the power of the show’s fandom. “By myself, there was nothing I could do,” Wachowski writes in the letter. “But just as the...

There’s really nothing quite like the 1985 pilot for “Glow: Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling,” which led to the cult series in which women portraying heroes and villains battle it out in over-the-top wrestling matches. Watching the nearly one-hour pilot, it’s easy to understand why Netflix found the material so compelling, and worthy of a new original series. Created by Liz Flahive (“Nurse Jackie”) and executive produced by Jenji Kohan (“Orange is the New Black”), “Glow” is centered on the fictional actress Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), who lands the acting role she’s desperately been searching for.

The original series created by David McClane and Matt Cimber that aired for three seasons is significantly different from what was shot for the 1985 pilot, particularly the opening introductions to the wrestlers.

"Will you accept that marriage is dead?" The Film Arcade has unveiled an official trailer for the new film written/directed by Lake Bell (of the excellent In a World... previously) titled I Do... Until I Don't. The film is an ensemble comedy following three couples "stuck in the web of a jaded filmmaker looking to prove that marriage should be a seven-year contract with an option to renew." Lake Bell stars, along with Ed Helms, Mary Steenburgen, Paul Reiser, Wyatt Cenac, Amber Heard, and Dolly Wells. I've been waiting to see another film directed by Lake Bell, and I'm so happy to have another one out this year! This looks entertaining, if not a bit depressing, but I'm just excited to see Bell directing again. Fire this up below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Lake Bell's I Do... Until I Don't, direct from YouTube: An ensemble...

“BoJack Horseman” has been taken down from China’s streaming site iQiyi just two days after Netflix made its debut in the country, Bloomberg reports. In an email to Bloomberg, iQiyi said simply that “Adjustments need to be made to the content.” Netflix wasn’t immediately available for comment. “BoJack Horseman” follows a washed up actor, voiced by Will Arnett, who navigates the sleazy world of show business.
China has previously censored U.S. shows on streaming sites, taking down “The Big Bang Theory” in 2014. Last week, China’s State Administration of Press, Publication Radio, Film and Television reportedly forced multiple outlets to stop...
