For February, Hulu brings home a bunch of under-the-radar indie offerings as well as at least one big-budget movie that has proved elusive on streaming services.

Netflix rang in 2024 with a huge opening week for its series Fool Me Once.

The thriller based on a novel by Harlan Coben scored better than 3 billion minutes of viewing in the week of Jan. 1-7, easily leading Nielsen’s streaming charts for the week (it premiered on New Year’s Day). The series had the biggest single week for any streaming show since August, when Suits (with a much higher episode count) brought in 3.24 billion minutes of viewing.

Fool Me Once had more than twice the viewing total of the second-place show, Reacher. David Lowery, Greg Papalia, Wynn P. Thomas and Francine West will receive Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 28th annual Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards, which will be presented Feb. 10 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom.

Thomas, who won Adg Awards for Hidden Figures and Da 5 Bloods, is the first African American production designer to join the Guild. Nicolas Cage is ready to show audiences he’s no Barney when it comes to joining the Dawn patrol for some heavy waves in The Surfer, a psychological thriller from Vivarium director Lorcan Finnegan. The project recently wrapped production in Western Australia, with Cage taking the lead as “a man who returns to Australia to buy back his family home after many years in the U.S. but is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a group of local surfers who claim ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood. Angelina Jolie told the Wall Street Journal Magazine that she probably would not become an actor if she was just starting out in the industry in 2023. She’d consider acting on the stage, perhaps, but certainly not a life and career in Hollywood.

“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” the Oscar-winner said. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”

Being under intense public scrutiny for well over two decades has seemingly taken its toll on Jolie, who found herself even more of a tabloid target after she divorced Brad Pitt seven years ago. The stress got so bad that she noticed in 2018, during the filming of her Disney sequel “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” that her voice had changed registers from when she first played the fairy tale villain.

You might recognize Taylor Sheridan from his role as David Hale on "Sons of Anarchy" or Travis Wheatley in Paramount+'s "Yellowstone," but the actor's work on screen is arguably not as impressive as the stacked résumé of films and television shows that he has written.

Sheridan began acting in the 1990s and took on a number of small roles in various TV shows and movies throughout the remainder of the decade into the 2000s. But his career as an actor never quite took off, which is when he discovered his talent and passion for screenwriting. After writing the pilot for "Mayor of Kingstown" in 2011, he knew that's exactly what he was meant to do. "I was a fair actor, but that's all I was ever going to be," Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter in a June 2023 interview. "Hollywood will tell you what you're supposed to do if you listen.

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.

In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.

Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Angelina Jolie has started choosing the roles she takes in movies based on the commitment she needs to make to a feature. The actress recently told Vogue in a new cover story that she began accepting less roles “seven years ago, only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.”

The reason, she explained, was that she needed to work on herself — especially amid her contentious divorce from Brad Pitt. “We had a lot of healing to do,” she said, inexplicably speaking in the plural. “We’re still finding our footing.

Exclusive: James Jordan has signed with Elevate Entertainment for representation.

Early in his career, Jordan secured TV guest-starring roles in shows like the CW’s Veronica Mars, Fox’s 24, HBO’s True Blood, CBS’ CSI and ABC’s The Mentalist. He also began building film credits starring in movies like The Endless, Seraphim Falls and Destroyer opposite Nicole Kidman.

To follow was a supporting lead role in the 2017 crime drama Wind River, which marked his first collaboration Taylor Sheridan. Jordan was later cast in a variety of high-profile Sheridan projects in recurring roles including the mega-hit Yellowstone, 1883 and Mayor of Kingstown, which reunited him with Wind River co-star Jeremy Renner. He also starred in Those Who Wish Me Dead opposite Angelina Jolie.

Taylor Sheridan is a force to be reckoned with. The acclaimed writer/creator/director has been able to get a laundry list of impressive actors involved with every one of his projects. The list has included Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Emily Blunt, Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, Angelina Jolie, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, Sam Elliott and Sylvester Stallone. And that’s just to name a few. Sheridan’s new series for Paramount+, Special Ops: Lioness, employs the likes of Zoe Saldaña, Morgan Freeman, Nicole Kidman, Laysla De Oliveira and Michael Kelly. The new Sheridan drama is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios for Paramount+.

The creator of hit shows Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, and Tulsa King now brings us a look into an undercover military program based on a true CIA operation titled Special Ops: Lioness. Paramount has just unveiled the tense teaser trailer. Zoe Saldaña leads an impressive ensemble cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Nicole Kidman, Laysla De Oliveira and Michael Kelly. Exclusive: As is often the case, two weeks before the Cannes market buyers were getting a little antsy about the lack of banner projects on offer. Those fears have largely evaporated as the enticing projects have rolled in, despite anxiety over the impact of the strike.

The latest hot package on offer is Oscar nominee Pablo Larraín’s (Jackie) biopic Maria about American-born Greek soprano Maria Callas which has Oscar winner Angelina Jolie (Eternals) aboard to star. Blue chip outfit FilmNation has newly boarded world sales and is launching ahead of the market, which gets underway next week.

The film, which was first revealed last fall, is based on true accounts and will tell the tumultuous story of the world’s greatest female opera singer, relived and re-imagined during her final days in 1970s Paris. Additional casting is underway.

All good things must come to an end ... even the record-breaking, highest-viewed show of all last year, apparently. Only a couple of days after we heard that star Kevin Costner would be leaving the acclaimed series "Yellowstone" after season 5, we have even more bad news to report. But don't worry, Western fans, it's not all doom and gloom!

According to Variety, creator Taylor Sheridan's flagship television series is set to come to a definitive end after its fifth and final season. The wildly popular drama told the story of the Dutton family of cattle ranchers and the conflicts they come across along multiple disputed border territories. With Costner now officially departing the series after months of rumors, anxious fans can at least rest assured that with everyone on the same page, ol' John Dutton and the rest of his family will likely receive the satisfying sense of closure everyone is clamoring for.

Four “Hunger Games” movies are coming to Fox’s free streaming service Tubi beginning May 1. The games begin with one girl and one boy from each district trained in the art of survival and ultimately, battling to the death. Unless your character is played by Jennifer Lawrence, in which case, all bets are off.

Fan-favorite TV series and a host of exciting films arrive on HBO and HBO Max this month. The fourth and final season of Emmy-winning drama “Succession” kicks off on March 26, so mark your calendars. Meanwhile, the long-awaited second season of “Perry Mason” is upon us with a debut on March 6, while “The Last of Us” wraps up its acclaimed first season on March 12. And the Oscar-nominated documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” makes its streaming debut on March 19.

Noteworthy new library titles this month include the first two “Creed” films, the cult favorite “Speed Racer” and the Paul Rudd/Jason Segel comedy “I Love You Man.”

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.

The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).

HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Exclusive: Deadline has learned that Tony Tost’s feature directorial debut Americana, from Bron Studios/Saks Picture Company is making its world premiere at SXSW on March 17 at the Paramount Theatre in the festival’s Narrative Spotlight section.

Formerly known as National Anthem, the pic stars Sydney Sweeney, Paul Walter Hauser, Halsey, Eric Dane, Zahn McClarnon, Gavin Maddox Bergman, Simon Rex, Derek Hinkey, Toby Huss and Harriet Sansom Harris. In the pic, unlikely heroes and villains must navigate a complex playing field in pursuit of a legendary Native American artifact with ties to the complicated history of the American West in this elevated, darkly comedic crime thriller.

The movie also marks multi-platinum, chart-topping singer-songwriter Halsey’s first on-screen role. The award-winning, Grammy-nominated recording artist has amassed more than 50 billion streams worldwide, and over 75 million RIAA-certified singles and albums sold.

Bron and WME Independent are repping worldwide sales for the acquisition title.

When viewers first heard the gravelly voice of Kevin Costner's "Yellowstone" character, John Dutton III, back in 2018, he was talking about how the goal of ranching is to "survive another season." That's the goal of most TV shows, too, and it's one "Yellowstone" has accomplished for five seasons now. In the same way that Dutton and his family own most of Montana (or at least the biggest contiguous ranch in the United States), "Yellowstone" has carved out a massive piece of real estate for itself on TV, becoming the most-watched show of 2022 and siring the equally popular Paramount+ streaming spin-offs "1883" and "1923."

Exclusive: Independent studio wiip has preemptively acquired An Honest Man, an upcoming novel by Michael Koryta, to develop as a television drama series, with Koryta attached to pen the adaptation.

An Honest Man tells the story of Israel Pike, a man just released from prison for killing his own father, who returns to his ancestral island home in northern Maine and quickly becomes the primary suspect when seven men, including two Senate rivals and the prosecutor who sent Pike to prison, are found dead aboard a yacht drifting offshore. Lt. Jenn Salazar of the Maine State Police takes the lead in the investigation on Salvation Point Island, operating with secrets of her own to protect.

The novel will be published by Mulholland Books July 25, 2023.

It’s last call for a number of noteworthy movies leaving HBO Max in December. If you remember “Project Popcorn” – the strategy that saw all 2021 Warner Bros. movies stream on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters – then “Mortal Kombat” and “Those Who Wish Me Dead” will sound familiar. The martial arts reboot and Taylor Sheridan thriller, respectively, will be leaving the streaming service this month.

It’s also final call for Martin Scorsese’s “Bringing Out the Dead,” the extended version of Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” and Edgar Wright’s terrific sci-fi action-comedy “The World’s End” if auteurs are your thing. “Planet Earth” and “Planet Earth II” are also leaving the streaming service soon.

It’s almost the end of another year…another grueling, relentless, shuffle around the pitiless sun. But before that: more content! HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2022 is filled with a handful of exciting original TV series.

December 2022 truly is TV’s time to shine on HBO Max. Things get started on day one with the release of Gossip Girl season 2 (Dec. 1). That will be followed by His Dark Materials on Dec. 5. Adapting The Amber Spyglass, this season promises to be the most action-packed yet for the BBC/HBO fantasy collaboration. December 8 sees the arrival of Doom Patrol season 4. This DC comic property doesn’t have the cultural cache of some of its CW contemporaries but when it’s rolling, it might be one of the best comic series around.

Now that Warner has mostly scuttled its simultaneous streaming/theatrical release strategy, there aren’t many big original movies to speak of.
