Cali is CALI...! Ciudad Delirio really hit my proverbial Nostalgia Sweet Spot! To be honest, knowing that it was produced and filmed in the city of Cali, Colombia, actually caused me to set my expectations relatively low.... Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised...DELIRIO has a lot going for it! Having lived in Cali for over 16 years, more than 1/3 of my adult life, it is, perhaps, hard for me to be impartial, though.
The music and dancing are absolutely incredible, just out of this world! Making this film an absolute Must See for anyone and everyone mentioned in my Title above. OK..Let us broaden that by adding Latin Music and Latin Culture lovers, and just about anyone who has ever spent much time anywhere in Colombia!
The DVD I saw was produced and distributed in Colombia, so it did not have any captions in English (or in any other language, for that matter!) My curiosity prompted me to look for the U. S. release date on IMDb.... Guess what? Apparently, it was not released there until March of 2015...at the MIAMI International Film Festival! (Miami is considered the Capital of Latin America by many Hispanics!) Honestly, I am Clueless as to the reason for the 1 year delay in its U. S. release!
IMDb lists DELIRIO as a joint Colombian/Spanish project, but after carefully reading all the credits, my best educated guess would be that a lot of the bankrolling was from Spain. But, other than that, and the fact that the male lead is Spaniard Julián Villagrán, the film basically has CALI written all over it!
By the way,...from a technical standpoint; the cinematography was top-notch, done in a most artistic and pleasently stylized way! The film-editing demonstrates an absolutely uncanny sense of timing, the sound recording, to the best of my discernment, was as good as anything Hollywood releases! DELIRIO definitely is one of the highet quality Colombian films I have ever seen... And it is important that I mention that I have seen quite a few!
A Special inclusion in this Review must be given to the Sound Recording! As far as I know, DELIRIO is the first Colombian film released completely in Dolby 5.1 Surround!
This production also shines for its no-frills, Less is More, storyline. Add to that its both extrenely natural dialogue and acting and you get an 8 Star experience that lasts exactly 90 minutes before the end credits begin to roll!... At least, all of the above, is what DELIRIO was for me!
I honestly think DELIRIO has at least a little something special to offer everyone who takes 90 minutes out of their life to watch it with an open mind! Also, I certainly hope my carefully crafted review meets with your approval!
