I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. I tend to put on horror/slashers on in the background but this one caught my attention. It even had a couple of decent surprises. I rated this as a 7 because it's better than average for this type of genre but it's not going to be to everyone's taste.
If you are looking for something completely original, particularly gruesome, or with a lot of jump scares, this isn't for you.
However, if you like splatter slashers with some comedy, Lowlifes is a good choice. They did a good job with the casting, the characters were fun, and it looked like the cast was enjoying themselves.
If the film makers or cast ever look at this, you did a great job and I look forward to seeing future films.

Lowlifes didn't offer me any surprises when it came to the main plot but definitely has a few unexpected moments along the way.
It's hard to discuss without giving away too much but I wanted to add a little review just to bolster the ratings really as the filmmakers and actors deserve it.
This is a low budget feature but the cast put a lot in and make you root for or hate the relevant characters.
It's acting that hopefully sees the main players get more work in the future.
The action/horror moments are gory and tense and hit the spot of what's hoped for in a slasher movie like this.
It's a little gem of a film that I hope gets watched by a good number of people.

Tubi original Lowlifes breathes some new life into the old 'city folk vs. Hillbillies' genre, blending comedy and gory horror to great effect. It's best to go into the film blind, so I'm not going to summarise the plot or mention any spoilers, suffice to say that it serves up some neat twists along the way.
Directors Tesh Guttikonda and Mitch Oliver deliver a fun movie that isn't to be taken seriously and their cast act accordingly, putting in enjoyably campy/comical turns. This doesn't mean that the horror is any less effective when it happens though: there's some genuinely nasty stuff in the film with plenty of graphic splatter along the way.
Don't watch this one expecting it to be a game changer -- I don't think the film-makers had such aspirations -- accept Lowlifes for what it is... a bloody good time with its severed braised tongue firmly in cheek.

Being honest I was skeptical when I found out this was a Tubi original
I mean let's face it some of the programming on Tubi is scraping the bottom of the barrel But it turned out it was better than I would've expected I liked the role reversal The blood and gore all throughout the movie was amazing But the ending was a glorious chaotic spectacle I noticed a couple people in their reviews were saying something to the effect That the ending of the movie could make or break it Personally I thought the ending was fine I like it when movies throw me twists and turns that I'm not expecting and this movie gave me plenty of surprises.
Wow this was actually surprisingly competent to come out of Tubi but I'm not going to be the one complaining about it. I've never actually watched a Tubi original before having seen this film but I have used to streaming service quite a good bit due to its wide range of different films, but since it is a free streaming service that relies on ads I didn't expect it's original content to be all that great and I have a feeling the plethora of other originals they've released aren't really all that amazing - but I am fairly confident in saying that their newest horror film "Lowlifes" was actually quite a bit better than I had expected. It has a lot of things to like about it and despite it very clearly not being perfect and having some pretty noticeable flaws, the late majority of this is at the very least entertaining and more than violent enough to make for a good cannibal centric horror comedy experience.
I completely forgot that this movie wasn't your standard "redneck torture family" thing like you would expect from "The Hills Have Eyes" or "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" until around like thirty or so minutes into the movie the twist occurs and honestly I was somehow blindsided by it. In hindsight it is a very obvious twist but I wasn't paying attention nearly enough to the way it was progressing to get that, but I do believe that it is a really great flip on the usual way these things go and makes for a much more compelling narrative that somewhat falls off towards the end but never entirely nosedives. Although; if there is one thing I can very confidently say about this movie is that I did not enjoy its ending in the slightest, it really reminds me of like "Cabin Fever" so if you've seen that film you know exactly what it means... I don't personally like it but I don't think it's not well done as it does work but just aggravated me, so I can only take half a star off for that fact as this would probably be a four.
If there's one definitive plus I can give to this movie is that I found it to be insanely funny pretty much the entire way through, and that's not something I usually expect going in to horror comedies but almost every single joke in this film worked perfectly for me and that was partially due to just how not serious it takes itself but also the way all the jokes are delivered by their respective actors. It all flows together super neatly and this might be one of the funniest horror comedies I have seen in recent times, definitely up there for this decade and I am a believer that the comedic aspect of this film is clearly the best part of it as a whole. However; that's not to say it's the only good part as the rest is also pretty great, the acting for one is superb from start to finish.. Amanda Fix as Amy is a very clear standout example for the level of talent on display here and she plays conflicting emotions surprisingly well until that kind of fades away towards the end, Matthew MacCaull is probably one of the funniest people I have ever seen on screen and the way he goes about doing everything he does here is hilarious, plus a tiny role given to Richard Harmon who I personally know best from "Grace Encounters 2" but is probably most well known for his amazing role in the show "The 100".
Another really fantastic part about this movie was it's kills and the overall way they're shown - this is a pretty gory film and I can't say I was expecting that in the slightest. From the very first kill shown to us in full detail it is very clear that it handles its effects with care and is brutally disturbing whenever it does so. I mean it is a film revolving around a cannibalistic family so you would expect to see people getting eaten, killed and dismembered but the way it's shown is real gruesome and surprisingly detailed. There's one character who's whole deal for a while is that the favorite part of the human body for them to eat it the eyeballs, and that is both awesome and horrible, plus there's a really amazing scene of someone getting shot through the neck with a bow and arrow and it's exactly as cool and horrifying as it sounds. Definitely much better effects work here than I thought was gonna be present and left me fairly impressed the entire way through, and they never take a significant dip in quality or anything - leaving them visually impressive and compelling to watch, which is always a major plus watching a horror film like this.
Lowlifes is a Tubi original movie that's actually good for some reason? I never thought there would come the day where I would be able to somewhat confidently say that but I do actually think this is an above average horror/comedy that is worth checking out since it's free and super easily accessible. It's not something that's going to go blowing your socks off or anything but it's a wildly fun ride that is never once dull or uninteresting and leaves the viewer with a sense of intrigue and just the excitement of seeing how these two families are going to clash. At the very least I can say that this movie is impressively well made, from it's set designs, acting, and of course effects - this is a movie that I definitely recommend for anyone craving a dumb fun horror film but don't go expecting some masterpiece. It doesn't take itself seriously like ever and neither should you, it's an enjoyable experience and that's all I could really ask from it.

It was an entertaining enough movie to watch its nice when a horror movie attempts to do things different to the rest, which was unexpected especially from a tubi original. It helped that i didnt watch a trailer before hand as ive heard it kind of spoils it.
And although the pacing at times was off and there wasn't alot of plot you often don't need it in a horror for it too be worth watching. Felt like the acting for the most part was good.
I recommend this for anyone who just enjoys watching horrors, feel like alot of these bad reviews are from people who didn't enjoy being taken down a different path to the usual horror movie setup.

The cast deliver commendable performances, especially considering their relative inexperience. The dynamic between Fix's character, Amy, and Llewellyn's Savannah is particularly noteworthy, adding depth to the film's tension and suspense. The movie also stands out for its well-executed gore, which is impressive given the budget constraints.
One of the highlights is the plot twists that keep viewers guessing until the end, culminating in an unusual and unpredictable ending. Despite some familiar horror tropes, "Lowlifes" manages to deliver a fresh take on the genre, making it a standout among Tubi Originals. Additionally, Amanda Fix's portrayal of Amy, the main role, not only showcases her acting skills but also her striking breasts, which adds another layer to her character's appeal.
Overall, "Lowlifes" earns a solid 7 out of 10 for its engaging storyline, effective use of gore and the surprising quality of the cast's performances.

This was really surprisingly good.
I started this movie with zero expectations. At first it seemed like the retelling of the same old "back woods inbreeding" kind of story. So wrong!!! There's a BIG TWIST that just sets this movie apart from everything else out there.
Tubi really scored with this one, in that it's a Tubi original. There are plenty of reasons to watch Tubi, but if they keep making originals like this one, I'll check Tubi first for movie selection.
This movie is considered a dark comedy, but there's so much more than macabre flat humor. Don't judge this one by the cover art. Thanks.

Lowlifes (2024, USA), despite being just another slasher film, has a bit of a twist which makes it kinda interesting. The problem here is that the writer then failed to make use of an ideal opportunity for a double whammy. Instead she decided to incorporate a bit of a moral lesson. Things got somewhat worse when the writer / directors decided to explain the moral lesson to us "as if I'm five". That said, apart from a script which tied the film's hands behind its back (and did so immediately after almost delivering a knock-out) the film was decently directed, really well acted (given the script restraints) ,and had some kick-ass blood and guts effects. Even the cinematography and cutting contributed in spades to atmosphere and tension. It's really sad that the script did not capitalise on a brilliant idea. With the correct and logical second reveal, even the lacking dialogue would not have prevented this film from being an 8/10 film. As it stands, 6.5/10. Ps nothing against the writer in general, as her work on "The Influencer" was solid.
Keith (Matthew MacCaull) drives his RV from Los Angeles with his family, formed by his wife Kathleen (Elyse Levesque) and their teenage children Jeffrey (Josh Zaharia) and Amy (Amanda Fix), to enjoy a barbecue in an isolated area in the countryside. Out of the blue, the brothers Vern (Richard Harmon) and Billy (Ben Sullivan) arrive in their old truck looking for their brother Melior (Todd Masters). Jeffrey offers a chocolate bar to Vern and the family feels threatened and resolve to leave the place. On their way back home, they find the old truck blocking the narrow street and Vern asks them to give a ride to Billy to get aid for the car. Now Keith drives his RV with Billy looking at Amy and looking for his house.
"Lowlifes" (2024) is a refreshing Canadian horror movie with a plot point in the very beginning disclosing a psychopath and cannibal family. The plot is great, with many surprises until the very end when the dumb deputy arrives at Neville's home. The comedy and the horror are well-balanced and works very well. Unfortunately, there is not much to say about this movie without spoiler. My vote is seven.

While in places Lowlifes teeters on the brink of dismal, there is just enough to keep you watching to the end.
The storey is run-of-the-mill blood and splatter. There is a twist, which leads to an interesting finale. Beyond that, there is no noticeable character development. Which is a shame, as there is a lot of room to expand on some of the characters' motives.
Given the fairly narrow scope of the film, it is not surprising that the cast could do little more than service the script. The dialogue revolves around vignettes designed around shock or humour, rather than narratives that build a story. Because of this, the characters are quite superficial.
If you do make it to the end you might find yourself thinking, as I did, this is a mediocre film that could really use a better written prequel. There's novelty worth exploring, and for that reason I am glad I watched it.

Well it was a great movie for about the whole movie. Plot twist was amazing and hooked me in. It was the ending that made me rate it low. I predicted what was going to happen as it was happening and once it happened, I shut the movie off. I don't want to spoil it but if I would have knew how it ended, I wouldn't have wasted my time. It isn't anything new. I will say every movie that ends similar to this, I do not like at all. The one who lives I kind of liked til crap started hitting the fan. I don't like characters switching up like they bad to the bone when they have acted another throughout most the movie. It's really annoying. And for this person to be the one to live aggrivates me more. I don't have high expectations for these types of movies but dang. It could have ended better. Bad endings aggravate me off because I invested my time throughout the whole movie to be disappointed. I would rather have been disappointed in the beginning or the middle so I could save my time and find another movie. Like man, this movie was on point til that one part. I think if you can get past the ending, you will enjoy and appreciate the movie. It was well thought out and I guess I can say the ending was too. Just wasn't my cup of tea. Like I said, not a unique ending, I just don't like those endings in movies unless I at least like the character. Anyways, don't go off my review. My opinion is subjective. If you can give a movie a break, then give it a watch. I really love movies and sometimes can take them to far! I realize 1 part in a movie shouldn't dictate the overall rating. I had it rated at 2 stars and now changing to a 5. I'd never watch though and would not refer this to any of my friends though lol.

I shouldn't have watched this movie. At the end it just doesn't make any sense. In real life people won't do that stupid mistake. Good horror and visual effect I must admit, just illogical. Completely stupid at the end. In the beginning it is so surprising, so promising, so thrilling. But when you have started to enjoy the horror then you realized there's a big hole in the wall that the director made and apparently forgot or couldn't patch it. I dunno how this movie can get 5+ rating (maybe from the effects), but I personally rate this movie as 1/10 because of a single mistake made by the director or the writer or whoever made this movie.

I don't often leave reviews, but this movie exceeded almost all of my expectations! The storyline took an unexpected twist early on, and the film had a great cast throughout. The entire movie was undoubtedly dominated by exceptional performances from Matthew MacCaull and Richard Harmon. The locations and cinematography were also excellent. The only let down for me (no spoilers) was the seemingly exaggerated effort from Josh Zaharia. He really came into his character in the latter half of the film, but during the first half I felt myself realising that his facial expressions seemed a little too forced, which risked giving the movie the overenthusiastic feel of a 'try hard' budget movie and distracting the viewer (if you're sensitive to the authenticity of performances). Otherwise, I really enjoyed this and would highly recommend if you're into slasher, suspense, horror genre!

I'm genuinely surprised by this Tubi original's production quality, performances, and storytelling. It is better than it has any right to be, given how terrible the horror entries on the streaming service usually turn out to be. There are some slasher formula subversions, and those are best enjoyed by fans of the genre. For a 1h 30m flick, a decent amount of texture is attributed to each character, and the guessing game (of who survives) kept me engaged throughout. Some may also opine that the film does not offer much beyond its first big twist, but the gorehound in me was fairly satisfied. Of course, I wouldn't say it has a lot of recall value or anything; it's still way better than what mostly features on Tubi (..and oh yeah, I've seen A LOT!).

I have to admit, I didn't expect to be this surprised. Lowlifes (2024) might just have the best horror screenplay of the year so far. While big-budget studios are throwing millions at mediocre scripts and casting marquee names who can't act their way out of a paper bag, it's refreshing to see a smaller platform like TUBI deliver a film that genuinely shocks and impresses. If this trend continues, we might just reach a point where we never utter the words "surprised" or "impressed" again when it comes to the film industry.
The indie scene is where it's at, folks. They're taking risks, pushing boundaries, and telling stories that the big studios wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. Lowlifes is a prime example of this, a film that defies expectations and delivers a truly unique and unsettling viewing experience.
The film's strength lies in its clever and unpredictable script, which keeps you guessing until the very end. The characters are well-developed and relatable, even as they descend into a spiral of violence and chaos. The performances are top-notch, with the cast fully committing to their roles and bringing the twisted story to life.
Lowlifes is not for the faint of heart. It's a gritty, violent, and often disturbing film that doesn't shy away from exploring the darker side of human nature. But for those who crave a truly original and thought-provoking horror experience, Lowlifes is a must-see. It's a reminder that the best films often come from unexpected places, and that the indie scene is a treasure trove of untapped potential.
