Trying to locate a famous treasure, a group of explorers are thrust onto a dangerous journey involving the search for a fabled island containing immeasurable treasure held by the family, but when they arrive on the island find everything guarded by a massive snake must stop it to get away alive.
This was a solid enough if somewhat problematic genre effort. Among the better features here is a strong enough setup offering a generally enjoyable treasure-hunting storyline to get everything setup. The initial setup involving the family's ancestor taking the treasure to a remote island for safety only to discover the snake's presence on the island has thrown it into chaos and subsequently caused it to be lost to history beyond the few clues written about it that they have in their possession and can use to coerce him into going along on the trip with the best of the team that's been gathered. This extends nicely to the tomb-raiding sequences on the island as they try to make their way to the treasure which involve the usual assortment of puzzle-solving, trap-evading, and several fine stunts to pull it all off that there's some fin to be had with this starting point. That allows for the film to introduce some decent action scenes here to provide some additional fun. The first encounter with the massive snake out in the desert where it crashes through the rock outcroppings and forcing the team into a high-speed escape through the area on their ATVs allows for a spectacularly enjoyable start to things which gives this great action, cheesy effects, and an imposing monster to fight off. Later scenes inside the temple while uncovering the treasure offer more creatures with the encounters involving the insect-like creatures are enjoyable as well with the need to be innovative in their defensive tactics to get out alive making for a fun series of scenes that come off quite nicely. When it finally returns in the finale as a threat to their escape attempts, the action comes off well enough to counteract its brevity with the rest of the explosive scenes on display that are all enough to hold this one up overall. There are some factors found here that hold this one down. The main detriment is the excessively uneven time spent on a tomb-raiding adventure storyline that leaves a lot of the film focused on those issues rather than dealing with the rampaging snake on the loose. Even though the creature is on the loose quite early on and it's presence is revealed, once it's dealt with the creature is rarely mentioned or brought up again as the team is far more concerned with getting to the treasure rendering it a bit more of a nuisance than anything else rather than a fearsome threat to be taken out to continue their mission safely. As well, the constant need to try intersecting comedy into the film, either with exaggerated mugging for the camera, musical stings that lessen the suspense of the sequence significantly, or corny physical gags all come off as cheap rendering a lot of the scenes to be lowered in intensity than expected. These all manage to give the film some drawbacks to overcome.
Rated Unrated/R: Violence and Language.
