Jane Chen, a 45-year-old violinist in NYC, faces challenges in her quest for professional success. Even though she plays second violin in a quartet, she still aspires to play lead, but time is against her. The appearance of a strange violin aids in raising her playing to the next level as both a young foe and a perceptive conductor acknowledge her feelings of being the second fiddle. The old violin is worn, a handcrafted relic from the past with a dark family connection. It takes a life of its own as Jane starts losing her grasp on reality and begins having dark premonitions which seem to foreshadow the future. In an already strained relationship with her girlfriend Glenda, Jane also has to make a choice between her new found success or her partner.
