Stephen King is primarily a prose writer, but he loves comic books too. He's dipped his toes into the graphic medium, contributing to 1985 one-shot "Heroes for Hope: Starring the X-Men" (a "comic jam" featuring writing from Alan Moore and George R. R. Martin too), and co-writing the horror comic "American Vampire" with Scott Snyder.
Before those, King's eighth novel — "Firestarter" — was him telling a superhero story in the horror space. "Firestarter" follows the McGees, a father (Andy) and daughter (Charlie) on the run from a government agency called the Shop. Years prior, Andy and his wife Vicky volunteered for experiments with the drug Lot 6, which turned him into a psychic and made Charlie born a "firestarter," able to spark flames with a thought.
King's seventh novel, "The Dead Zone," was about a man gaining clairvoyance and ultimately trying to assassinate a political candidate he foresees causing a nuclear war. "Firestarter" feels like a spiritual sequel,...

Some classic rock bands, like Alice Cooper, wrote song after song that begs to be played on Halloween. Meanwhile, The Eagles gave us one great Halloween song and called it quits. Here’s a look at the many influences behind one of the band’s best tunes.
The Eagles did a Halloween song that’s 1 part sexy and 1 part dark
Judging by the massive flux of tourists that come to Salem, Massachusetts in September and October, the Halloween season seems to be a good time for witchcraft. The canon of popular music has a few songs on the topic, including Frank Sinatra’s “Witchcraft,” Cher’s “Dark Lady,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon,” and Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse.” One of the best is “Witchy Woman” by The Eagles.
The song’s ominous opening fits the overall vibe of dark magic. While witches have sometimes been stereotyped as ugly, The Eagles...

Katy Perry‘s 143 is her attempt to reclaim her position as one of the Queens of Pop. It’s not surprising that the “Teenage Dream” singer is drawing inspiration from her back catalog. What’s shocking, however, is that she ripped off one of her lesser-known tracks. The song sounded better the first time around.
The complicated background of a Katy Perry single from ‘143’
Perry’s defining album is Teenage Dream. The album has some serious moments, but for the most part, it is pop culture candy. It even had cotton candy clouds on the cover! Tracks like “California Gurls,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” and “Firework” are perfect music for the dancefloor, the gym, or the mall.
The follow-up, Prism, was a little more grown-up. In it, Perry referenced William Shakespeare, dabbled in Eastern spirituality, and sang a power ballad about unconditional love. One of the highlights...

Who is Katy Perry? As she reminded people in the initial run-up to her comeback single “Woman’s World,” where she dusted off her six RIAA-bestowed Diamond awards, she’s one of the biggest-selling pop stars of the millennium, with fizzy, playful tracks like “California Gurls” and strident empowerment anthems like “Firework” racking up millions of sales. She’s judged wannabes on American Idol; she’s headlined the Super Bowl halftime show; she’s celebrated a king’s coronation. She’s done it all, backwards and in heels.

Over the years, awards shows have lost viewers’ interest — but, surprisingly, the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards were actually worth watching.
Here are the top moments from Wednesday night’s event, which aired live from Ubs Arena in Belmont Park, New York
Performance Of The Night
Benson Boone’s signature performance flips were so impressive we need to send him to the 2028 Olympics. If he doesn’t join the gymnastics team, he can at least sing at the global event.
The rising star had the performance of the night — he kicked off “Beautiful Things” on piano and worked the stage like a seasoned pro in a glittery navy number. His screeching vocals were top-notch and he had audience members, including Sabrina Carpenter, singing along to the pop-rock TikTok hit, He also won best alternative.

Patton Oswalt’s Dark Horse comic book Minor Threats is heading to the small screen as a live action series for Netflix.
As well as acting, Patton Oswalt is well known as an award winning stand-up comedian, having released several specials and toured all over the world. When Kentaro Miura first released the Berserk manga in 1989, he changed the entire Seinen manga genre by portraying a new side of dark, epic fantasy storytelling that was never seen before. It became such a big hit that even after his death in 2021, the production studio decided to keep the manga going in honor of his legacy.
Berserk manga | Studio Gaga
Miura had a deep understanding of how to make a dark and depressed-toned story attractive to readers. However, he was not born with this skill but acquired it through reading almost every genre of manga as much as possible. He kept reading manga, irrespective of their nature or the type of storyline, and absorbed as much as possible.

Comic book writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist David López were co-pilots on Captain Marvel, the comic book series that revamped Carol Danvers for the 21st century. It was so influential that it even helped convince Oscar-winner Brie Larson to star in the Marvel Studios film of the same name.
So it’s only fitting that DeConnick and López’s first work together in years has an origin story dating back to the March 2019 premiere of the movie adaptation. The duo were in Los Angeles for the film’s debut, and over a dinner, López suggested they should work on an original, creator-owned comic.

The first trailer for Hellboy: The Crooked Man was released at the start of this month and the response has been mixed at best. Now, we have runtime news and that may or may not bode well for this new take on the character starring Jack Kesy.
According to reliable runtime leaker @Cryptic4KQual, it will clock in at a mere 1 hour, 39 minutes.
With superhero movies, that's typically an indication they're not very good. Then again, this is a lower-budgeted project and could be a smaller self-contained story which isn't quite as CG-heavy as the movies starring Ron Perlman and David Harbour.
At least we know Hellboy: The Crooked Man will be a relatively breezy affair, anyway, and there's every chance it's going to exceed expectations when it finally arrives in theaters.

From the neon-haired pin-up of 2010’s “California Gurls” to the metal-mouthed teen of 2011’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” to the strawberry-blond hippie of 2019’s “Never Really Over,” Katy Perry’s career has been largely defined by her outrageous video fashions. The singer’s latest reinvention for “Woman’s World,” the lead single from her seventh studio album, 143, has sparked some backlash. But even a car crash is hard to look away from, and Perry’s videography remains one of the most eye-popping of the 21st century. We took a look back at some of her wildest video looks.

Prior to Perry’s 2010 smash “California Gurls,” she relied on her girl-next-door-cum-pinup good looks, but this Matthew Cullen-directed video (inspired by the work of artist Will Cotton) reset the bar for her visuals. Sporting a violet-hued wig and,...

“Teenage Dream” is arguably Katy Perry‘s signature song. One of the writers did not want to hand the track over to the “Dark Horse” singer, but she had to because she was in a desperate situation. The songwriter revealed why she felt so connected to “Teenage Dream.”
Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ is connected to Britney Spears and Taio Cruz hits
Bonnie McKee is a professional songwriter who gave us Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” and Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite.” She also co-wrote about half of Perry’s hits, including “Teenage Dream,” “California Gurls,” “Roar,” “Wide Awake,” “Birthday,” and “Part of Me.” During a 2013 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McKee discussed the progression of her career. “It kept going up step by step by step where the names kept getting bigger and the sessions started getting more real,” she said.
McKee was asked which of her songs made her the most proud.

Katy Perry‘s “Firework” was co-written by one of the most important songwriters working in the business today. She revealed what it was like to work with the “California Gurls” singer. Interestingly, “Firework” was part of a larger trend that took the world by storm at the time.
‘Firework’ was co-written by someone who wasn’t impressed with Katy Perry’s fame
Paradoxically, Ester Dean is a superstar behind the scenes. She isn’t a household name, but she’s co-written hit songs like Rihanna’s “What’s My Name?” and “Where Have You Been,” Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass,” Beyoncé’s “Countdown,” and Perry’s “Firework.” During a 2011 interview with Billboard, Dean explained her approach to working with superstars.
“I don’t dwell on celebrity,” she explained. “[Artists and producers] don’t want me to kiss their a** and be all over them like a groupie. They want me to deliver. Some people...

This past May, we gave Daily Dead readers exclusive first deatils on Summer Shadows, the upcoming horror comic book mini-series that's billed as an "Lgbtqia+ romance turned deadly mystery." With the first issue coming out in September, I had a chance to catch up with John Harris Dunning, who talks about the origins of the series, working with Ricardo Cabral, and more!
I understand that the inspiration for the story's setting is based on your own summer trips to a Greek Island. Why did you feel this setting was perfect for a vampire story?
John Harris Dunning: I’ve been regularly visiting Greece for a decade now, so it’s like a second home to me. There’s a very strong tradition of vampires or vrykolakas there. Widespread reports of these undead creatures persisted as recently as during the Second World War. Then there’s the Greek fascination with the idea of eternal beauty,...

The Umbrella Academy has one last chance to save the timeline.
Netflix released the season four trailer for one of the streamer’s most popular shows on Tuesday, teasing the group embattled in one last mission to save the world.
Among others, Nick Offerman will join the season four cast, and fans catch glimpses of his character in the new trailer. “The world we live in is one big phony baloney lie,” he says in a voiceover. “That tentacle boy is the key to understanding all the timelines.”
It appears Offerman’s character is referring to Ben, played by Justin H. Min, whose character’s back-from-the-dead storyline will feature heavily in season four.
The new installment, set for release in August, will begin after season three’s major showdown at the Hotel Oblivion, which reset the group’s timeline and left the original siblings stripped of their powers. Now, they...

Katy Perry‘s “Firework” is perhaps the most ubiquitous Fourth of July anthem and self-empowerment anthem of modern times. Interestingly, it was co-written by a movie star who appeared in a popular trilogy of movies. The star noted that many fans are unaware of her role in penning the song.
Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’ is connected to songs by Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Beyoncé
Ester Dean co-starred in all three of the Pitch Perfect movies as Cynthia-Rose. She also appeared in other Hollywood films like Rio and Ice Age: Continental Drift. However, she is most known for writing pop songs.
Some of the hits she wrote for other artists include Rihanna’s “S&m” and “What’s My Name?,” Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass,” and Beyoncé’s “Countdown.” She has a penchant for writing for major pop divas, but her tunes are all very different.

American Idol judge and country superstar Luke Bryan recently opened up about his future on the reality singing competition following Katy Perry’s exit from the panel. So, what did he have to say about how things are looking for him?
American Idol: Luke Bryan Brings Country Grit To Judging Panel
In many ways, when it came time to shake up the judging panel when American Idol returned to television screens, Luke Bryan was the perfect choice, alongside Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, to launch this reboot. Some viewers even joke that Luke Bryan joining the panel was the answer to Blake Shelton being a judge on The Voice.
No matter the reasoning, along with Lionel Richie and Katy Perry, Luke Bryan has proven himself to be a great choice to judge the singing competition. Despite being a country megastar, Bryan has an approachability factor that comes through in the way that he coaches,...

While Netflix did a decent job with Avatar: The Last Airbender, it is no doubt that the show left a lot to be desired, when it came to the standards set by the IP. Given that Paramount and Nickelodeon are gearing up to expand the franchise with a dedicated studio, there is one way that the original creators of the show can lead up to its big releases, bringing the IP back into the mainstream conversation.

Shifty Shellshock, frontman of Crazy Town, has died at the age of 49.
According to the Los Angeles’ coroners office, Shellshock died at his home on Monday (June 24th).
Update: The cause of death was an accidental drug overdose, according to Shellshock’s representative, Howie Hubberman. “Seth has been struggling with substance abuse problems for quite sometime,” Hubberman said in a statement. “Seth was not happy with the daily struggle that’s called life. Some people cope in many different ways. It’s unfortunate we lose so many people to addiction and accessibility to harmful drugs. Shifty was a real-life tragedy. Too fast, too hard, too soon.”

The legendary George Lucas’ media franchise, Star Wars, might be the third-highest-grossing film franchise of all time, but to reach that level, the franchise had to bear a lot of criticism. Some of this criticism even came from one of the biggest mangakas, Kentaro Miura, who wrote the Berserk manga, which is an epic tale in itself.
Berserk Manga By Kentaro Miura | Studio Gaga
Miura was a big fan of Western movies and series. Even his magnum opus shared some similarities to many cult classics of his time, like The Evil Dead. He once revealed his favorite movies, directors, actors, franchises, etc. And while talking about his favorites, he mentioned that he was a big Star Wars fan.
However, there was one Star Wars movie that Miura believed was very weak, and maybe Lucas jumped the shark on it. The movie was the prequel to Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,...

The world of anime and manga has seen some brutal and gruesome scenes, but none of them compare to what Kentaro Miura introduced in the story of Berserk. Being a Seinen manga, it is expected to have some grim scenes, but the adventure of Guts was too uncomfortable, even for the fans of the Seinen genre.
Mangaka Kentaro Miura’s Berserk | Studio Gaga
From torture to ghastly deaths, since the beginning of the series, Berserk has never shied away from going beyond the threshold and including provocative scenes in order to perfectly portray the severity of the narrative. And while these horrifying scenes might prove to be a little shocking for the fans, Miura seemingly had no regrets about them.

Katy Perry is launching a new era of music, and though it’s garnered some excitement, it’s generated some controversy as well due to the reported involvement of Dr. Luke.
It began on Monday when Perry teased a new song titled “Woman’s World” (due on July 11th), which led fans to notice that Dr. Luke was listed as a co-producer on the song’s Genius page. Rolling Stone has since confirmed that Dr. Luke is, indeed, involved in the project, citing a “Capitol Records source.”
Though the two have collaborated on massive hits in the past — like “I Kissed a Girl,” “California Gurls,” “Dark Horse,” and more — many were disappointed that Perry teamed up with Dr. Luke again, especially in light of his high-profile legal battle against Kesha. In the course of that litigation, he was accused of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, with Kesha even alleging that Perry was also a victim.
