Lane College, a historical black college based in Jackson, Tennessee, is mentioned quite a bit in the movie but no scenes were actually shot on campus. The director attempted to get clearance to film at the college, but there wasn't enough time for college staff to file the proper insurance paperwork before production was set to start. T.R. White Sportsplex and the Oman Arena, two notable gyms in the area, were used in place of the college.
This is a direct remake of the director's first film which was cast entirely with first time actors. Having vastly improved as a filmmaker since that production, Jaron Lockridge decided to redo the movie feeling the original idea had more potential than he was ready to execute at that particular time.
The lead actor in the original version of Betray, Jeremy Shaw, reprises his role as Joel in this movie.
Lead actress, Shi Smith, became extremely ill during the two days the climax and most intimate scenes were scheduled to be filmed. The location set as Deon's rental home in the movie was only available for two days and the first day on schedule had to be halted due to her condition. A bulk of the scenes were postponed to the next day in hopes her condition would improve. Still sick on the second day, she urged the director to continue with the shoot and the most important scenes were completed. Some scenes had to be scrapped and a portion of the story was rewritten on that day to salvage production.
