Many infuriating scenes in Game of Thrones made viewers want to tear their hair out, and according to George Rr Martin, there’s a single story that genuinely devastated readers enough to burn his book. As a writer, this is painful to hear, but it also proves how effective Martin is as an author.

Earlier this year Game of Thrones star Kit Harington revealed that HBO would not be moving forward with a sequel series about his character Jon Snow. "Currently, it's off the table, because we all couldn't find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough," he said. "So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It's firmly on the shelf."
This was a blow to Game of Thrones fans who wanted to see what happened to Jon Snow after the end of the show. Did he live with the wildings? Did he ever see Sansa or Arya again? Did he feel like coming south and trying to claim the Iron Throne? We may well never know.
in fact, if Harington had his way, we...

Harry Collett is part of the vast ensemble cast on HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon. He plays Jacaerys Velaryon, the son of hopeful Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), which means he's only a few bodies from taking the Iron Throne. Collett only featured in a couple of episodes of the first season, but we got to see a lot more of his well-intentioned, noble-hearted character in season 2.
Collett talked to Hero about how he got the role in the first place. It ends up that HBO was trying to keep things hush hush at first, even from the stars. "I did a self-tape and it didn’t say much, it just said ‘Untitled HBO Series,’" Collett remembered. "I was like, 'Ok, that’s great, I know a lot now.' [laughs] My character was called Jack, so it could’ve literally been anything and this was...

Okay, this is the barest, tiniest update on a Game of Thrones project currently in development, and I'm almost embarrassed to be writing about it, but here we go: Mattson Tomlin, the man whose been hired to develop a Game of Thrones prequel idea about Aegon the Conqueror, posted a cute little dragon Gif to his Twitter. Behold:

Aegon the Conqueror, the first of many notable men in Westerosi history to be named Aegon Targaryen, was a dragon-rider who lived some 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones (and over 100 years before the events of House of the Dragon). Along with his dragon-riding sisters Rhaenys and Visenya, he took over the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and united them under one ruler, which just so happened to be him. HBO’s boss has talked about what it’s like to work with George R.R. Martin, and it’s naturally pretty complex!
Adapting a work by a famed author is always a tricky proposition. When the author in question is known for a temper and some unique views, it’s trickier. That was HBO’s issue when they began work on Game of Thrones, adapting George R.R. Martin’s best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire epic.
It seems to have worked all right, with Thrones becoming a massive Emmy-award-winning hit that spawned a prequel House of the Dragon and more plans besides. However, there’s always been a bit of friction between HBO and Martin. Some of it is natural, with Martin clashing a bit on HBO changing the book’s plots and storylines, although he’s mostly been supportive.
The big problem is that Martin has yet to complete his Song saga.

Earlier this year, we got confirmation that HBO's planned Game of Thrones sequel series following the continuing adventures of Jon Snow - real name Aegon Targaryen - had been shelved.
Actor Kit Harington, who was set to reprise his role as the honourable "bastard" of Winterfell turned rightful heir to the Iron Throne, revealed that the show will not be moving forward while speaking to Screen Rant.
“Currently, it’s off the table because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough," Harington explained. "So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”

HBO currently has one Game of Thrones prequel show on the air — House of the Dragon — and another on the way: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is due out on HBO and Max next year. And it seems like lately we've been hearing a ton about other projects in development. There's a show about Aegon the Conqueror in the works. There's a Game of Thrones movie in early development. Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) may be getting back in the mix. It's true that HBO's parent company Warner Bros. Discovery has said it wants to focus on franchises. Are we about to be inundated with way more Game of Thrones than we can handle?

Game of Thrones was the biggest hit in the history of HBO, not to mention the most talked-about show of the 2010s. The prequel show House of the Dragon, based on George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, has also been a ratings winner, and basically gives fans more of what they got the first time around: back-stabbing, battles, and deep dark character drama.
But HBO has another Game of Thrones prequel series on the way, and this one is different: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be based on Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, about a very tall knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his precocious squire Egg. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set decades after House of the Dragon but decades before House of the Dragon. There are no dragons around, and at least in the novellas Martin has written so far,...

A couple weeks back, The Hollywood Reporter leaked the info that Warner Bros. Discovery was working on a movie set in the world of Game of Thrones. The other day, HBO executive Casey Bloys confirmed that such a thing does indeed exist, although he cautioned that it's "very early in the process." Just because something is in early development doesn't mean it will ever actually make it to the screen; if HBO had their way, we probably wouldn't have heard about the movie at all unless and until it was ready to reveal.
"When we announce at HBO we're developing this story or that story, keep in mind it's developing," Bloys told a group of reporters, per Entertainment Weekly. "They'll develop an idea, we'll see if it's good. We'll read the scripts along with them. I think it could be fun and interesting. That's the point of development: you see,...

Fantasy author George R.R. Martin has hints at a secret new project he is working on with “Game of Thrones” actress Maisie Williams, which has interested fans of the famous TV show.
Martin recently wrote on his blog that he met Williams in London over pizza and pasta, but he omitted the specifics. His writing only said, “It could be so much fun,” without explaining how they might work together.
Williams, who played Arya Stark on the eight-season HBO show, hasn’t spoken publicly about the meeting. Fans and reviewers alike loved how her character changed from the daughter of a nobleman to a skilled killer.
The possible project comes up as things are still happening in HBO’s Game of Thrones. Casey Bloys, who runs HBO’s programming, said the bond with Martin was complicated but important. Bloys said, “He’s very important to me and us.” She compared...

From the moment Game of Thrones ended in 2019, fans have been eagerly waiting for HBO to greenlight an official spinoff for its Emmy-winning drama.
Now calm down, we know that HBO has already ordered a few official shows set within the world of Westeros with House of the Dragon two seasons in with a third season in the works, and A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms coming in 2025. These two shows are very much set within the world of HBO’s hit series; however, these two series are prequels set before the events of Game of Thrones. What we’ve long wanted is an actual spinoff that continues the story told in Thrones and found a way to bring back a few familiar faces from the flagship series.
Given how the series ended, there were more than a few options HBO could have chosen to explore and it seems like...

George R.R. Martin is teasing a project with Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams.
The author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the fantasy novel that inspired the HBO drama series created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, hinted he was working with Williams on something.
“We also got together with Maisie Williams for pizza and pasta, and talked about — well, no, better not get into that, do not want to jinx it,” Martin wrote in his blog as he recounted his travels in London. “But it could be so much fun.”
Martin didn’t specify what the project with Williams was about or whether it involved a Game of Thrones sequel. Williams played Arya Stark throughout the show’s eight-season run on HBO.
HBO head Casey Bloys commented earlier in the day on how it to work with Martin on the multiple projects set in the Game of Thrones universe.

It was reported just last month that Warner Bros. was developing a potential Game of Thrones movie, and HBO’s Casey Bloys has confirmed that it is in the works, although it’s still in the very early stages.

I mean, that’s the point of development, you see is there a story that’s worthy of being in theaters and a big spectacle? HBO and its increasingly aligned streaming sibling, Max, is wrapping a good-bad year. The revived True Detective was a hit by nearly all metrics, House of the Dragon returned to robust ratings and, most recently, Chimp Crazy became the streaming platform’s most-watched doc series. Smaller critical darlings popped up throughout. But because output was diminished by the 2023 strikes, knee-capping its Emmy haul in the process, the narrative wasn’t always that positive.

Back in September, about a month after the second season of finale of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon, author George R.R. Martin — who wrote the books on which both shows are based — wrote openly on his blog about where he felt the show had gone wrong, promising bigger, "more toxic" changes from the source material ahead should the show stay on its current course.
Martin deleted the post not long after, but the damage had been done. Game of Thrones is the biggest hit in HBO's history and was probably the biggest TV show of the 2010s, so to have its creator openly criticizing the prequel show was wild. It's the kind of thing you wonder if the two teams could come back from.

A fourth season of “The White Lotus” could already be in the works. HBO and Max boss Casey Bloys told reporters Tuesday that he visited creator Mike White on the show’s Season 3 Thailand set earlier this year, and that White already has ideas percolating for Season 4.
“Mike, obviously — if he wants to move forward and do the four seasons — he will do the fourth season,” Bloys told reporters. He was mum on any details, of course. The next “White Lotus” is set to premiere in early 2025 with returning cast member Natasha Rothwell, as well as new stars Carrie Coon, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan and Parker Posey, among others. White created the series and serves as executive producer and director, and it won the limited series Emmy in 2022 (before moving to the drama category).

While HBO head Casey Bloys is appreciative of everything George R.R. Martin has done for his network, he’s standing by “House of the Dragon” Season 2.
“I want [Martin] to be happy. He’s very important to me and to us. But when we put shows together, it’s difficult to make decisions when adapting existing work. It can be fraught, sometimes rocky,” Bloys said at a Tuesday press event in Los Angeles that included TheWrap.
In September, the author behind “Game of Thrones” chronicled what he believes HBO did wrong in the second season of “House of the Dragon,” which is based on Martin’s 2018 book, “Fire & Blood.” His biggest criticism revolved around the elimination of Prince Maelor, Aegon and Helaena Targaryen’s youngest son. The author said that choice will have repercussions as the series moves into Seasons 3 and 4. In the HBO show, Aegon and Helaena only have twins Jaehaera and Jaehaerys.

All hope is not lost for a Game of Thrones spinoff about Jon Snow.
HBO chief Casey Bloys confirmed Tuesday Kit Harington’s revelation earlier this year that the sequel series is no longer in development, at least for now, but that doesn’t mean the network won’t circle back to the idea at a later date.
“Maybe we’ll try again,” Bloys said during a press preview event for HBO and Max’s upcoming 2025 slate. He didn’t expand on what factors might make that spinoff possible.
In April, Harington told ScreenRant that the series was “off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being.”
The actor also did echo Bloys’ sentiment, adding: “There may be a time in the future where we return to it,...

Among the returning series previewed in the spot, there are first looks at “Hacks” Season 4, featuring Deborah (Jean Smart) getting in Ava’s (Hannah Einbinder) face and sarcastically calling her a “big, brave girl,” to which Ava coolly replies “I guess I am;” “The White Lotus” Season 3, which features Walton Goggins admiring a huge gold Buddha statue and the return of Natasha Rothwell’s Season 1 character Belinda; and “The Righteous Gemstones” Season 4, which features John Goodman with a long,...

‘Game of Thrones’ is one of the most successful shows in television history, breaking all sorts of records. But if you ask many fans, it’s also the one with the most disappointing ending due to a variety of factors including Martin’s inability to wrap up the story on time.
Due to the show’s initial success, it’s not surprising that numerous spinoffs were born from it. Some are in active development and some were ultimately shelved.
HBO has been working on several potential ‘Game of Thrones’ successor series since 2017. Initially, they commissioned five prequel ideas, but many were abandoned, and some were based on material from ‘Fire & Blood.’
Notable projects include ‘House of the Dragon,’ a series about House Targaryen’s downfall, which was greenlit in 2019 and premiered in August 2022. Other spin-offs in development include ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ based on Martin’s ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg,...

The Game of Thrones franchise is busting out all over these days. The prequel show House of the Dragon just wrapped up its second season, the prequel show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is coming next year, and we've known for a while that playwright Duncan Macmillan was writing a play called The Iron Throne, about the fateful Tourney at Harrenhal that led to Robert's Rebellion, the war that set the stage for the events of Game of Thrones.
We hadn't heard much about The Iron Throne in awhile, but leave it to Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin to update us on his Not a Blog. The author visited London earlier this year and saw MacMillan's play People, Places and Things. "I think we’re in good hands. Duncan’s play was dark, powerful, and intense. We grabbed a lunch at our hotel a few days before seeing the play,...

Tonight marks the finale of The Penguin, the latest hit show for HBO. The network is taking the opportunity to show off some of what it has coming over the next year. Check out their brand new sizzle reel:
There's quite a lot of good TV coming round the bend, including lots in the sci-fi and fantasy space. On November 17, the network premieres its Dune spinoff show Dune: Prophecy, which we've seen ahead of time and can assure you is good. And next year, we've got stuff like the second season of The Last of Us, another season of the cheerfully vulgar DC show Peacemaker, plus brand new shows like It: Welcome to Derry and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is a new Game of Thrones spinoff.
We get new footage from It: Welcome to Derry and from Peacemaker, but the footage from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms...

For some fans of genre storytelling, 2024 has been a bit of a disappointing year. The Boys season 4 didn't over with fans quite as well as past installments, the House of the Dragon showrunners are feuding publicly with George R.R. Martin, and the latest Star Wars content from Disney+ — The Acolyte — was extremely divisive among fans. Since these were some of the most highly anticipated and high-budget genre series of the year, it has left many fans of genre storytelling feeling a bit morose. There have been bright spots: the historical fiction series Shogun crushed it at the Emmy’s and I personally am really enjoying the return of The Legend of Vox Machina. But whether because of last year’s acting and writer’s strikes or because new seasons of shows are taking longer than ever to reach our screens, 2024 is definitely not the year that it could have been.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the studio that owns HBO, wants to focus on franchises; CEO David Zaslav demands it. That's why we've seen the Game of Thrones universe expand with new spinoffs like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and why The Penguin was spun off of the 2022 movie The Batman. And Wbd isn't stopping there; they want these franchises to expand into other mediums, like video games.

The other day, it was revealed that Warner Bros. Discovery, the company that owns HBO, is developing a Game of Thrones movie. To be specific, they're in early development on one, and we can't be sure that the idea will ever see the light of day; they've developed other TV spinoffs only to shelve them in the past. Still, the notion of a Game of Thrones can't help but get the gears turning. What would that look like?
We know that HBO is developing a number of potential TV spinoffs to Game of Thrones, some of which seem closer to the starting line than others. For instance, they're we know they're developing a prequel show about Aegon the Conqueror, who brought together the Seven Kingdoms some 300 years before the events of the main show and became the first Targaryen king to sit the Iron Throne. His story would probably make a good movie,...

Over the past few years, we've seen several big screen franchises brought to television, whether it's the MCU, Star Wars, or even The Batman thanks to HBO's new mega-hit, The Penguin.
Now, it looks like Game of Thrones is going the other way by heading to theaters. The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) reveals that Warner Bros. is developing at least one feature set in the world created by author George R.R. Martin.
According to the trade, it's only in a very early stage of development and no director, writer, or actors are currently attached. However, the studio is eager to explore Westeros in on the big screen, a decision which has surely been influenced by a year that's seen them deliver box office disappointments like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Joker: Folie à Deux.

The clocks have gone back. Winter is coming. And that can only mean one thing. No, not Christmas — news from Westeros, of course! With prequel series House Of The Dragon proving a hit with fans and critics alike (even if not always Thrones author George R. R. Martin), and spin-off show A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms well on its way, stock in Game Of Thrones — five years after HBO's eight season fantasy epic concluded — has scarcely been higher. And now, as THR are reporting, it looks like A Song Of Ice And Fire may be about to be sung on the big screen at long last.
According to THR, "at least one" film set in Martin's world of dragons, politicking, warfare, and White Walkers is in development at Warner Bros. already. And whilst said development is very early stages, with no creatives attached in front of or behind the camera,...

Another return to Westeros is being planned, but this time Warner Bros wants a Game Of Thrones movie. More here.
HBO’s Game Of Thrones came so very close to being the peak show of the peak TV era. Boasting more must-see moments than any of its rivals, for years the fantasy saga was an unrelenting tractor beam, constantly drawing in new audiences as the buzziest show on television.
While the signs were there beforehand, it was of course that final season that was the undoing of Game Of Thrones however, with a series of baffling story decisions and lack of narrative logic seriously denting the show’s reputation. HBO’s prequel spin-off House Of The Dragon has its admirers but hasn’t really been able to rebuild the fervour around the Seven Kingdoms that once existed when Game Of Thrones was at its all-conquering peak.
Perhaps that’s why...

Warner Bros. is stirring up the excitement by starting work on a “Game of Thrones” movie. This development was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter and it’s causing quite the buzz among us fans. The idea of seeing George R.R. Martin’s world of Westeros in movie theaters is something many of us have been dreaming about.
Right now, the movie is in the very early stages. There’s no writer, cast, or filmmaker linked to the project yet, but that hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm.
The thought of Westeros on the big screen is a big deal, especially since the original creators of the “Game of Thrones” series, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, once expressed a desire to wrap up the saga with movies instead of the 2019 series finale.
The landscape of films and TV has been evolving. Nowadays, it’s not strange to see movie characters jump...

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Warner Bros. Discovery, the studio that owns HBO, has been quietly developing a Game of Thrones movie. There's no cast, there's no writer, there's no director. We don't know what the movie would be about. Maybe it would be a prequel, like the TV shows House of the Dragon or the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Maybe it would be a sequel, like the Jon Snow show that got developed and then dropped. It's possible that Wbd will develop this idea in the background only to drop it without it ever coming to anything; keep in mind that they're not announcing this movie, THR just dug up this info.

You may be able to see the wonders of Westeros on the big screen someday soon.
A movie set in the world of HBO’s Game of Thrones is in early development at Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter. Now when we say “early development,” we mean “early”: No cast, writer or director has been attached to the project as of yet, and no storyline has been revealed. But “the company is keen on exploring the idea of Westeros invading cinemas” with at least one movie, THR says.

Could a Game of Thrones movie be in our future? THR has heard that Warner Bros. is “quietly developing at least one film set in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy universe.” The project is still in the very early stages, with no director, writer, or cast attached. So we may still be a ways off from seeing Westeros on the big screen, provided it doesn’t get shelved like so many other Game of Thrones projects.
When Game of Thrones was still in the midst of its run, there were rumours that creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss wanted to end the series with three theatrical movies. The pair confirmed the plan earlier this year but said HBO executives shot it down, reminding them that they worked for “Home Box Office” and not “Away Box Office.”

A movie extending the Game of Thrones franchise, based on the hugely popular fantasy books by George R.R. Martin, is in very early development at Warner Bros., sources have confirmed to Deadline.
Warner Bros declined to comment. From what we hear, there have only been preliminary discussions on the subject of a Game of Thrones movie for now, so there are no creative attachments to speak of. It’s also unclear what creative direction a film would take in comparison to the HBO series, which adapted Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series.
News of the potential project comes five years following the conclusion of the David Benioff and D.B. Weiss-created Game of Thrones, which brought forth huge viewership and ample accolades for the premium cabler, including 59 Emmys.

The world of Game of Thrones could finally end up on the big screen.
Warner Bros. has been quietly developing at least one film set in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy universe, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Multiple sources describe the project as very early stage development, with no filmmaker, cast or writer yet attached. But the company is keen on exploring the idea of Westeros invading cinemas.
The move might represent a shift in the company’s strategy regarding the property. The showrunners of the original Game of Thrones series (David Benioff and Dan Weiss) famously wanted to conclude the series with three feature films instead of its 2019 final season. Martin was also keen on the idea of a movie and the author told The Hollywood Reporter back in 2014 that concepts were being kicked around. But for a long time, HBO strongly resisted the idea and instead wanted...

Last year, sometime after the conclusion of the first season of House of the Dragon, Insight Editions put out a book called Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon: Inside the Creation of a Targaryen Dynasty, all about the making of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series. That book included lots of behind-the-scenes images from the show, concept art, and interviews with the cast and crew courtesy of author Gina McIntyre, who was offered generous access to the set during filming.
Since then, the second season of the show has come and gone, ending back in August. Now, McIntyre and Insight Editions are back with a new book called Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon [Season 2]: Inside the Dawn of the Targaryen Civil War. Once again, McIntyre was given "unprecedented access" to the set at Leavesden Studios in England. Expect "exclusive insights," "in-depth interviews with showrunner Ryan Condal and the incredible cast and crew,...
