The Rolling Stones spent the last three months hitting football stadiums in major cities all across North America on their Hackney Diamonds tour. But it all wrapped up Sunday night at the New Thunder Ridge Nature Arena at Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Missouri. That’s a 20,000-seat outdoor amphitheater in the Ozarks that more typically hosts shows by the likes of Luke Bryan and Pitbull.

Up until recently I worked the night shift in a hotel, so I know how creepy it can feel at times, especially when you’re getting used to the place with all of the building’s odd little noises and quirks. That’s the position Gwen finds herself in.
Recently moved into the area and in need of money, she’s answered an ad for a temporary overnight position at the All Tucked Inn. The owner Teddy, who seems to be making his story up as he goes along, tells her the woman who regularly does the job has been sidelined with medical issues. He’d love to stay and help, but he has a date. But there’s nothing to worry about, this is a quiet, peaceful place where nothing ever happens.

Keith Richards and Mick Jagger are a fantastic songwriting duo who have written several classic rock songs for The Rolling Stones. However, the two artists have different personalities, sometimes creating conflicting lyrics. Jagger said Richards wrote one song for their Exile on Main St. album that he called “weird” and “difficult.”
Mick Jagger didn’t understand The Rolling Stones’ ‘Let It Loose’
“Let It Loose” was released in 1972 on The Rolling Stones’ 12th album Exile on Main St. While the track is credited to Jagger and Richards, it was primarily written by Richards. The song is about a man who is conflicted about a relationship he’s in. He knows the woman will break his heart but can’t resist her.
The track has gospel influences and contains lyrics from “Man of Constant Sorrow,” a traditional American folk song by Dick Burnett. In a 2010 interview with Uncut magazine, Jagger recalled “Let It Loose,...

No specifics as to roles of the new cast members have been disclosed, but they join an ensemble that Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult and Tye Sheridan will lead, as previously announced.
Based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s book The Silent Brotherhood, which chronicles the escalating crimes of the titular white supremacist domestic terror group, the film is set in 1983 amongst the series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations and armored car heists that frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards can come across as prickly. Perturbed. Ornery. Impatient. He’s also very opinionated and doesn’t try to hide it, such as when he gave critical reviews of other musicians. Even bandmate Mick Jagger can’t always escape his scorn. Still, Richards praised Jagger’s musical talents on one particular instrument, and we get it.

Jessica Lee Gagné had shot Ben Stiller’s narrative TV directorial debut, “Escape at Dannemora,” in 2017, but when Stiller told her about his next project, she had a hard time getting on board. The focal point of Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed series “Severance” is an office — a big square room with white walls, beaming fluorescent lights tucked into a low ceiling, four desks at the center, and a green carpet. Outside that is a labyrinth of stark white hallways even brighter than inside the office. Gagné couldn’t think of anything worse as a director of photography.
“There were no windows,” she said. “I can’t not have a window. But ‘Severance’ is probably a good lesson that you can really make [something] what you want it to be.”

The unbelievably sad news that Charlie Watts has died is just beginning to reverberate around the world. The public knew he was going to miss out on the upcoming Stones tour since he was recovering from surgery, but the 80-year-old drummer had survived past health scares unscathed and it truly seemed like he was made of steel.
Watts joined the Rolling Stones in January 1963 and is the only member besides Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to appear on every record. He also didn’t miss a single concert throughout his 58-year history in the band.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

When Keith Richards first met Gram Parsons in 1968, he felt he’d known him all his life. “There was an immediate recognition,” he wrote in his autobiography, Life. “What we could have done if we’d known each other earlier.”
It’s easy to discern the influence Parsons had on Richards, who had a cosmic country streak with 1968’s Sweetheart of the Rodeo with the Byrds and 1969’s The Gilded Palace of Sin with the Flying Burrito Brothers. His death at the age of 26 only further cemented his legacy as a country-rock pioneer,...

Jessica Lee Gagne was surprised when she received an email that Ben Stiller wanted to meet with her to discuss “Escape at Dannemora,” a limited series based on the infamous 2015 prison break that he was directing for Showtime. The then 29-year-old Canadian cinematographer had not worked in the U.S., nor shot a TV series, and had no clue what had even put her on the famous actor-director’s radar.
“This was so far fetched – when I read the email I was like, ‘What is this?'” said Gagne, who appeared at IndieWire’s Consider This Fyc Brunch earlier this month. “Why is he interested in me? What is he trying to achieve? Normally when you meet with directors you know which film of yours they liked.”
It turned out Stiller had been impressed by “Sweet Virginia,” a yet-to-be released indie Gagne had shot in 2016. Gagne came into the meeting...

I Kill Giants, produced by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) and directed by Academy Award-winning director Anders Walter, is based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel by Image Comics’ Joe Kelly and J.M. Ken Niimura. The film tells the story of Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe), a teenage girl who escapes the realities of a troubled school and family life by retreating into a magical realm fighting evil ‘giants’ – colossal monsters who attack her quiet coastal town.
With the help of her new friend Sophia (Sydney Wade) and her school counsellor (Zoe Saldana), Barbara will learn to face her fears – tackling the mean bullies at school, coming to terms with her difficult home life and battling the mythic giants that threaten her world.

Sweet Virginia is a tense, violent neo-Western from the producers of The Raid 1 and 2 that will have you gripped from start to finish. As layered as it is tense this is a tight, brutal thriller with a meticulously crafted plot that starts with a gruesome murder scene and doesn’t let up from there. And it’s all carried along by a first-rate performance from The Punisher himself, Jon Bernthal.

The Big Sick (Michael Showalter)
From start to finish, The Big Sick, directed by Michael Showalter, works as a lovingly-rendered, cinematic answer to the dinner party question: “So how did you two meet?” Based on comedian Kumail Nanjiani‘s real life (he co-wrote the screenplay with his wife Emily V. Before it's time for us to serve up some turkey Stateside, here are my thoughts on two recent indie genre films I’ve had the pleasure of checking out: Megan Freels Johnston’s horror comedy The Ice Cream Truck and Jamie Dagg’s crime thriller Sweet Virginia, featuring Jon Bernthal.
The Ice Cream Truck: Akin to an early Tim Burton-esque take on the horrors of suburbia and adulthood, Johnston’s The Ice Cream Truck is a slightly absurd yet wholly relatable exploration of the anxieties of modern women, particularly those who don’t necessarily fit in with the typical “Bake Sale Moms” out there who always seem to have “it” together, living out their existences happily defined by their roles within their respective households.
In The Ice Cream Truck, we are introduced to Mary (Deanna Russo) who is anything but confident in the woman she has become over the years.

Leading fall Oscar contenders “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (Fox Searchlight) and “Lady Bird” (A24) continue to pull crowds as they both expand after limited openings. They are the top performers by far among specialized films this weekend, including the platform debut of “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” (Sony).
The Denzel Washington legal drama had a modest debut in four New York/Los Angeles theaters before its wider release on Wednesday. The fate of Dee Rees’ acclaimed “Mudbound” (Netflix) is the compelling story of the weekend. The ’40s southern farm drama opened in a handful of big city theaters parallel to its home-viewing debut, with grosses unreported by Netflix. We are estimating its performance based on limited indications from several theaters.
Also getting strong reviews for its New York-Los Angeles debut, the Chilean Oscar submission “The Fantastic Woman” (Sony Pictures Classics) opened for a qualifying week with no grosses reported. It...

Warner Bros. and DC Comics' Justice League struggled compared to expectations as it failed to top $100 million over the course of its three-day weekend. Meanwhile, it was Lionsgate's Wonder that captured audience attention, debuting with an excellent $27 million, topping Thor: Ragnarok for a second place finish, positioning itself well for the holiday weeks ahead. Additionally, A24's Lady Bird continued its impressive run in limited release as it makes way for a nationwide debut over Thanksgiving weekend. With an estimated $96 million, Justice League managed to top the weekend, but fell short of the low end of expectations. Despite bringing in $13 million from Thursday previews, which was $2 million more than Wonder Woman hauled in from preview screenings ahead of a $103.2 million debut, Justice League just couldn't crack the century mark, delivering the lowest opening for any of the films in DC's Extended Universe thus far. Opening day audiences gave the...

This weekend Marvel's latest hit Thor: Ragnarok is looking to top $250 million after 17 days in release while Warner Bros. and DC Comics unveil their latest entry into the DC Extended Universe, Justice League looking to make a splash globally, though that's not all this weekend has to offer. Lionsgate will debut the highly anticipated adaptation Wonder while Sony is debuting their faith-based animated title The Star. All-in-all we should be looking at a strong weekend in which the top twelve should combine for over $200 million for the first time since early July. Looking at a #1 finish, Warner Bros. and DC Comics' Justice League will debut in 4,051 theaters with industry expectations right around $105-115 million. Given Wonder Woman debuted with $103.2 million earlier this year, Suicide Squad opened with $133.6 million last year and Batman v Superman opened with $166 million, those expectations might seem low given this is essentially DC's equivalent to Marvel's The Avengers.

This month brings a handful of festival favorites from as far back as January finally releasing, plus a few blockbusters, and much more. It should be noted that Sony Pictures Classics will be giving a one-week qualifying run to A Fantastic Woman starting Nov. 17, but we’ll return to that when it gets a proper release next February.

In the tense opening moments of Sweet Virginia, before all hell breaks loose in a backroom fusillade, somebody mentions a highway closure and an encroaching fire. That detail might at first suggest a nod to topical matters, but it soon becomes clear that this taut drama exists in a timeless noir territory, a world of free-floating dread and dashed hopes where mood supersedes specifics of time and place.
Even the movie's switch of setting to Alaska, from the Appalachia of Benjamin and Paul China's Black List screenplay, is immaterial. What director Jamie M. Dagg achieves with his slow burn of...

Though he's been a working actor for years, Jon Bernthal entered a new level of recognition when he starred as Shane Walsh in the first two seasons of "The Walking Dead." Since then, his career has been on fire and in addition to his TV roles, he's also taken on some interesting film jobs. Sweet Virginia (review) is one of those.

If you're a fan of Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, The Punisher) I've got a trailer for a new film of his that you've gotta check out. It's called Sweet Virginia and it looks like a wickedly intense and brutal thriller. The movie also stars Christopher Abbott (Girls), Imogen Poots (Green Room), and Rosemarie Dewitt (Poltergeist).
The movie follows two outsider-type strangers that start up a friendship that seems to go very bad as a wave of violence in the community in which they reside begins. It looks like Bernthal gives an incredible performance and I'll definitely be checking the movie out!
