In Jennifer Coolidge’s Variety Actors on Actors conversation with Jeremy Allen White, she proposes that Tanya return to “The White Lotus” as a seagull, so she can poke out the eyes of her evil husband Greg (Jon Gries). Haley Lu Richardson, who played Tanya’s assistant, Portia, weighs in on killing off Greg during this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast.
“Jon and I worked together in the first movie I ever did — when I was 17 — called ‘The Last Survivors,’” she recalls, adding, “I was the hero and he was the villain. I killed him at the end of the movie with a samurai sword.”
She says she’d like to re-create that moment in Season 3 of “The White Lotus,” which takes place in Thailand. “Portia is somewhere in Asia with a samurai sword and kills Greg,” she says, laughing.

U.K. broadcaster BBC One has commissioned a feature-length documentary looking back at the events of 9/11.
Keshet International will distribute the film internationally, launching it as part of their Mipcom 2020 slate. Produced by Top Hat Productions (“The $50m Art Swindle”), the documentary is directed by BAFTA winner Arthur Cary (“The Last Survivors”).
“9/11: The Twenty Year Anniversary” will detail two hours of the tragedy, almost in real time, told by contributors’ stories of heroism and survival, and illustrated with personal and public archives. The film will juxtapose that two-hour story with the 20 years since, exploring how the lives of individuals continue to be affected by moments that took place in that period and how the world continues to be shaped by it.
Clare Sillery, head of commissioning for documentaries, history and religion at the BBC, said: “This film takes a new and different look at an important subject matter. All...

Thomas S. Hammock Digs Deep With The Last Survivors
By Terry Keefe
With the growth of technology over the past decade, it’s become possible for literally anybody to record a song, write a book or make a movie. With the inundation of content into the marketplace, it’s become more difficult than ever before for real filmmakers to get their work made, seen and, perhaps most significantly, monetized. Hollywood wants $300 million-budgeted tentpole comic book movies that will play as well in Beijing and New Delhi as they do in Muncie and Canoga Park. The indie film movement, once occupied by names like Quentin Tarantino, P.T. Anderson and Steven Soderbergh during its 1990s heyday, is basically non-existent now, those filmmakers having moved on to big-budget (or at least bigger than their salad days), more epic filmmaking. Many aspiring directors and producers find this landscape to be a bleak one, akin...

The month of August is off to a great start in terms of DVD and Blu-ray releases as fans have an interesting variety of horror and sci-fi titles to look forward to on Tuesday, August 4th. One of my personal favorite zombie movies as of late, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, will be making its home entertainment bow and we’ve also got a handful of other notable titles, including The Last Survivors, Lake Placid Vs. Anaconda, Into the Grizzly Maze, Joe Dante’s Burying the Ex and the fest-favorite documentary, The Nightmare.
And as if a new Dante film isn’t enough to be excited about, Warner Home Video is finally releasing a Blu-ray of Dante’s 1987 sci-fi comedy, Innerspace, on August 4th too.

Haley Lu Richardson in The Last Survivors
Just released on DVD, The Last Survivors – previously known as The Well – is a post-Apocalyptic survival story with a difference. It centres on a teenage girl, Kendal, who rather than fighting for her own survival is determined to protect the well that her ragged community depends on. Naturally this leads her into conflict with others who want the water in the region for themselves. The girl is played by Haley Lu Richardson in her first major film role. I asked her how she came to get the part.
"She's been stripped down to the core."
“It’s kind of a funny story,” she laughs. “I was with an agent for acting and they were sending me out to try for all sorts of things, mostly commercials. I hadn’t done much work because I had only just moved to Los Angeles, so I...

A recent New York Times article reports that droughts are intensifying across the United States western and southwestern regions, with California, Nevada and Oregon bearing the brunt. Texas is also experiencing drought across much of the state, and prolonged dry conditions put a considerably strain on water supplies for all uses. Many states are using innovative technologies -- aquifer storage and recovery, desalination, water "scalping" -- but are still forced into placing restrictions on water use, with fights over water rights ensuing between local government, landowners and consumers.

Dark Sky Films has picked up The Well, the feature directorial debut of Tom Hammock. No release date has been set, but a theatrical/VOD release is eyed for 2015.
At the edge of an expansive barren valley, all that remains of The Wallace Farm for Wayward Youth is a few hollowed-out husks of buildings. Seventeen-year-old Kendal (Haley Lu Richardson) can barely recall when the Oregon valley was still lush. It's been a decade since the last rainfall, and society at large has dried up and blown away.

Hammock makes his debut as director after serving as production designer on a number of notable genre indies including All The Boys Love Mandy Lane, You’re Next and The Guest. The Well premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June and will get a theatrical/VOD release early next year through Mpi’s Dark Sky Films.

In a dust stricken valley a teenage girl and her ill boyfriend, fight to survive in a post apocalyptic world where it hasn't rained in a decade. She's camped out on an old farm that has a working well but it's not clear how long Kendal and Dean can survive and avoid detection by both scavengers and a man who has twisted religion for his own means and is slowly taking over the valley by driving out the few remaining families. This is the world of The Well.
I know what you're thinking: been there, done that. Truth is, you're right. What's worse is that Thomas S. Hammock's debut as director doesn't offer a new angle to the story in any sort of way. It's clear from early on how this is going to play out and though The Well does seem to be taking an unexpected turn at...

Hell’s Wells: Hammock’s Debut an Elementary Genre Piece
Environmentally defined dystopias can either be beneficent, as regards a film’s budget, or an incredible boon, generally in reference to either set design or appropriate casting. As a directorial debut, Thomas S. Hammock’s The Well may be a strikingly pared down post apocalyptic exercise, but it might have whittled away a bit too much from its lean narrative structure. Sure to remind audiences of the dusty hell of David Michod’s The Rover, Hammock’s film recalls the Old West as readily as any number of end-of-times predecessors. At times displaying a bit of intrigue with its topical ideas, too much banality and a general lack of tension renders the film as dry as the arid tomb it depicts.

Marking the directorial debut of production designer Tom S. Hammock ("You're Next," "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane”), it's hardly a surprise to note that "The Well" has a stunningly well-designed sense of place, whether the huddled hideaways or sun-seared expanses are both required of the film's ruined world. Years after something's broken the world -- and a decade since the last rain -- "The Well" takes place in what used to be the Oregon Valley, now a dry desert. Kendal (Hayley Lu Richardson) is still trying to survive at the orphanage where she was a child, along with fellow holdout Dean (Boo Boo Stewart); their well, superbly hidden and maintained, provides them with just enough water to live. But their silence and exile and cunning is meaningless when Carson (Jon Gries), representative of "The Company," has his derricks suck the aquifer under the valley dry while rounding up --...

It’s the near future, and the world (or at least this part of it) is suffering from a decade-old drought. Two teens in the newly desert-like state of Oregon struggle to survive on what used to be a family farm — Dean (Booboo Stewart) hides out in the attic, Kendal (Haley Lu Richardson) makes runs to the nearby well for water — but their efforts are hampered by his failing kidneys, a roving band of violent marauders and the well’s dwindling water supply. They have a plane in a nearby barn, but it’s in need of a very specific engine part, and it soon becomes clear that they may not last until that piece is found. Dean’s health grows worse each day, and Carson’s (Jon Gries) gang is stepping up their efforts to eliminate threats to the region’s limited water sources. What’s a teenage girl with moderate shotgun and samurai sword skills...
