Zombies have existed almost since the beginning of cinema history. And no matter how many creative ways people have killed them over the years, those zombies just keep returning to the silver screen. Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of the zombie subgenre is that, with many of the films, screenwriters have concocted new causes for the initial zombie outbreak. Due to long-standing folkloric traditions, we all know how one becomes a vampire or how one becomes a werewolf. But with zombie films, we have the element of surprise on our side.
Through the years, we have seen zombie outbreaks occur due to voodoo and black magic, nuclear accidents and radioactivity, plagues, and—more recently—sexually transmitted disease. The Hideout (2014), however, keeps things a bit more simple. Filmed in Antelope Valley, the cause of the zombie outbreak in this new release is that good old California sunshine.
