Saoirse Ronan has spent much of her youth racking up Oscar nominations, scoring her first bid when she was 13 and her fourth when she was 25. Take a look back at 12 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Ronan’s parents were both actors and she was born in The Bronx, New York while her father was studying acting there and working odd jobs. Her parents returned to their native Ireland when Saoirse was three, where she developed her signature accent. She began acting herself at the age of 9 on a few different Irish television programs. Although she missed out on a role in the Harry Potter films, she bounced back with a key part in the 2007 Best Picture contender “Atonement,” which brought her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.
She earned three Best Actress nominations for three films that all competed in Best Picture: “Brooklyn” (2015), “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women...

Saoirse Ronan is opening up about wanting to see more flawed female characters represented onscreen after working on The Outrun.
The Irish actress’ career has been packed with angsty yet relatable roles for young women in films like Lady Bird, Little Women and Brooklyn. Before turning 30, she received four Oscar nominations. Ronan recently spoke with Elle and revealed what it was like to play Rona, a complex character, who’s struggling to get sober in The Outrun.
“I was so ready for it. I felt confident enough in my ability, but also confident enough in who I was,” she said. “I didn’t feel like I was being held down by a need to only play likable people.”
Ronan recalled seeing traits in other characters onscreen that helped her draw inspiration. “I really responded to Lena Dunham’s characters in Girls, who are arseholes sometimes, but we’ve all got the capability for that.

Saoirse Ronan is having a moment. Which is not necessarily a new experience, given she has four Oscar nominations to her credit. Now 30, the Irish-born actress first made the Academy cut at 14 for her supporting role in Atonement, which she followed with leading roles in Brooklyn, Ladybird and Little Women. But this year, playing a single mother in Steve McQueen’s London wartime drama Blitz, and a woman fighting her demons in Nora Fingscheidt’s addiction story The Outrun — Ronan’s first project as a producer — the goalposts for what she can achieve have been widened.

Mikey Madison has the potential to make history at the 2025 Oscars in Best Actress with Neon’s “Anora.” At the age of 25, she is receiving universal praise for her portrayal of the title character, a Brooklyn stripper who gets into a whirlwind, impetuous marriage. Sean Baker‘s wild romantic dramedy is continuing to gain massive buzz since winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Madison is currently headlined at the top of the combined odds at Gold Derby to win Best Actress. Should it occur, she would be the ninth youngest Best Actress Oscar winner and the first since over a decade ago.

The Best Actress Oscar race is looking more and more crowded as we get closer to the 2025 awards season, with numerous significant contenders in the running for those five slots. But if there’s one performance that’s surely going to make it in, it’s Saoirse Ronan in “The Outrun,” directed by Nora Fingscheidt. Why? Here are the Top 5 reasons …
1. Previous Oscar nominee.
At only 30 years old, Ronan has already received four Oscar nominations, and thus an acclaimed dramatic performance in her latest film will put her on the radar for many academy members. Her first nomination arrived in the Best Supporting Actress category for “Atonement” (2007) and then she was nominated in Best Actress for “Brooklyn” (2015), “Lady Bird” (2017), and “Little Women” (2019). Receiving as many Oscar noms as she has in such a short period of time shows that the academy is inclined to consider any new Ronan performance, and...

We Live in Time director John Crowley knew the level of excellence he’d be receiving from one of his most cherished former collaborators, Andrew Garfield, but it was Florence Pugh’s commitment to the nonlinear indie drama that managed to surpass any and all preconceived notions.
Oftentimes, stars prioritize their lucrative big-budget studio films, while their passion projects in the independent world have to work in the margins, both in terms of schedule and preparation. But in the case of Pugh and the role of Almut Brühl, she treated the Nick Payne-scripted romantic drama like it was as important as anything else, meaning she willingly shaved her head to play the part of a chef who risks, and later endures, a recurrence of ovarian cancer after starting a family with her boyfriend Tobias Durand (Garfield).

When word came out that Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, two of the best actors of their generations, would be co-starring in a romantic drama distributed by A24 directed by "Brooklyn" filmmaker John Crowley, I basically reenacted the Vince McMahon meme in real time because of how much the combination of those elements fall squarely within my personal set of interests. The film, "We Live in Time," lived up to my self-generated hype: It's an intimate, small-scale relationship drama featuring terrific performances, and is exactly the type of stripped-down, human story that has fallen somewhat out of fashion as Hollywood has evolved into its current state.
I recently had the chance to speak with Crowley about the way the film jumps through time, finding the movie's musical identity, the most challenging scene to get right, and working with the mega-talented duo of Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. Crowley previously directed...

John Crowley's wonderful romantic drama "We Live in Time" follows a couple played by Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh as they navigate how to deal with a cancer diagnosis. But don't let that description scare you off: While there are sad moments here, there's plenty of joy to be found throughout as well. Both of the actors are fantastic, giving exactly the top-tier performances you'd hope for from performers of their talents; their work is often quiet, sometimes explosive, but always relatable and extremely human. The movie marks a reunion for Crowley and Garfield, who had worked together on 2007's "Boy A," but this was the first time the director had worked with Pugh.

One hit horror sequel deserves another, and Art the Clown won’t be the only one smiling this weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Despite the huge success of Damien Leone‘s “Terrifier 3,” Art the Clown will have to deal with the fact there is likely to be an even bigger horror sequel this weekend as Paramount Pictures releases “Smile 2.” It’s the follow-up to the 2022 hit horror movie from filmmaker Parker Finn, which opened with $22.6 million on its way to $105.9 million domestic and $217 million worldwide. It should go without saying that October is the perfect month for a horror release, but oddly, the original “Smile” opened on September 30, then had sustained legs with smaller week-to-week drops. Other horror franchises that have dominated the month of October include the “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity” movies, both which saw huge bumps in business with their second chapters.

Plot: Tobias (Andrew Garfield) and Almut (Florence Pugh) fall in love but have to grapple with a grim diagnosis that threatens their future.
Review: One of the ironic things about TIFF is that, due to schedule quirks, you sometimes end up seeing movies that cover a lot of the same territory back to back. This happened to me this year with Nightbitch, and We Live In Time, with both films taking a look at 21st-century family life and the need to juggle family and career. Yet, while Nightbitch took a mostly unflinching look at the fact that relationships often become strained under the pressure, We Live In Time goes for an almost fairy tale-esque approach, with the impossibly beautiful couple at its heart having a picture-perfect life where both are fulfilled, in love and happy raising their cute child, who’s impeccably well mannered.
Not every film has to be Nightbitch though,...

Saoirse Ronan just dropped a truth bomb about Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Chronicles of Narnia, and honestly? We’re a little worried. While Gerwig’s magic touch turned Little Women into cinematic gold and Barbie into a worldwide sensation, stepping into Narnia’s enchanted world might be a different beast. Ronan, who’s no stranger to working with Gerwig, hinted at challenges that could test even the most skilled director. And let’s face it, Narnia fans are notoriously protective of their beloved land of talking animals and epic battles.

After nearly two decades, recollections may indeed vary. Consider this: When filmmaker John Crowley cast rising star Andrew Garfield in his 2007 drama “Boy A,” Garfield almost didn’t take the part. Or, wait, did he?
“We offered you the part,” Crowley said during a recent interview with IndieWire and his now two-time star. “And you said yes, and you then said no.” Garfield looked shocked. “Did I say no?” the actor asked, eyes pinging between Zoom windows.
Either way: Garfield did take the part in the heartbreaking British drama, and now, 17 years later, he and Crowley have reunited for “We Live in Time,” a tear-soaked drama of a different kind. Based on Nick Payne’s screenplay, the nonlinear love story follows the buttoned-up Tobias (Garfield) and the spunky Almut (Florence Pugh) over the course of a decade-long relationship that is, suffice it to say, filled with both high highs and extremely low lows.

Alexandra Daddario might have been known for her role in the Percy Jackson franchise. Filming intimate scenes must be the weirdest part of an actor's job -- and according to Andrew Garfield, he and Florence Pugh made everything much, much weirder by taking a sex scene way too far on the set of their new romantic drama "We Live in Time."
During a live taping of Josh Horowitz's "Happy Sad Confused" podcast (via a social media post mined by Variety), Garfield literally re-enacted the hilarious moment on set, explaining that he and Pugh had to shoot a sex scene alongside only a couple crew members (for privacy).

"And it's a closed set, which means it's only me and Florence in a room together and the camera operator, who is our [director of photography], a very lovely man called Stuart [Bentley]. Saoirse Ronan's career is going pretty spectacularly well — but she still can't quite get over the fact that she lost out on the role of Luna Lovegood in the "Harry Potter" movies.
During a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel to promote her upcoming film "The Outrun" — which marks the Oscar-nominee's first credit as a producer alongside her husband, actor Jack Lowdon — Ronan revealed that she auditioned for the "Harry Potter" character who makes her debut in the fifth book and film, "Order of the Phoenix." (The role ultimately went to then unknown actor Evanna Lynch.)
"There's things that you'll pass on and then they come out, and you think, 'Oh God, that was a misstep on my part,'" Ronan told Kimmel. "But I think the one that stayed with me over the years — I didn't say no to it, I just didn't get the part.

(The role ultimately went to then unknown actor Evanna Lynch.)
"There's things that you'll pass on and then they come out, and you think, 'Oh God, that was a misstep on my part,'" Ronan told Kimmel. "But I think the one that stayed with me over the years — I didn't say no to it, I just didn't get the part.

As written, the question was meant to be open-ended: “How do you the find emotional truth in a character?” If there’s any connective thread between the various roles in Saoirse Ronan’s impressive body of work, it’s that: some ineffable honesty about the emotional journey she’s carrying through her characters.
Fortunately, Ronan is astute enough and open enough to wrestle with such a question with grace and insight. That’s probably why she’s such a good actress.
“How do you breathe?,” Ronan responded with a laugh when asked about said emotional truth during a recent sitdown with IndieWire. “It sounds a bit pretentious to say, but I have grown up disappearing into the make-believe, and that helps me make sense out of the real world. The fact that I was an only child and I spent a lot of time on my own in my head,...

Every movie alcoholic lets you ride shotgun with them to their rock bottom, and the low point that Saoirse Ronan’s character — her name is Rona — hits headfirst in The Outrun is a high-impact one. When we first meet her, she’s being thrown out of a pub in London, having stayed long past closing time and even longer past her welcome. She’s coquettishly crawling under tables and on top of the bar, downing whatever half-drunk pints are left from previous patrons. When the bouncer tries to escort her to the door,...

John Crowley, whose romantic drama We Live in Time is currently breaking hearts on the fall film festival circuit, has signed on to direct Five, a psychological thriller currently in development at TriStar Pictures.
Adam McKay, Kevin Messick and Betsy Koch are producing the feature via their Hyperobject Industries. The project reunites the producers with Seth Reiss, the co-writer of the production banner’s 2022 dark thriller The Menu, which starred Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy.
While plot details are being kept behind the curtain, the project is described as a two-hander and is said to center on a recent widow who becomes obsessed with the actress of a one-woman show.
Reiss will exec produce. TriStar president Nicole Brown and Shary Shirazi are shepherding for the studio.

Irish director John Crowley and his “We Live in Time” actor Andrew Garfield hosted the last of this year’s star-studded San Sebastian press conferences for their Official Selection player, which will close the 72nd edition of the festival this evening.
Also starring Florence Pugh, “We Live in Time,” written by acclaimed playwright Nick Payne (“The Crown”), is the time-twisted love story of Almut and Tobias. Through disordered snapshots of their life together, the two experience great joys like parenthood, meeting each other’s families, a marriage proposal, and life-changing tragedies such as divorce and a recurring ovarian cancer diagnosis. The couple learns through their shared memories to cherish each moment of the roundabout path their relationship has traveled.
During Saturday morning’s press conference, Garfield said he was in a contemplative place when Payne’s screenplay crossed his desk. “When I read [the script], I was in deep contemplation of the meaning of life.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we tackle Best Actress, which has two favorites and lots of viable contenders for the other three spots.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’re back together to type about what is annually our favorite category: the Best Actress race. But as you’ve said when we’ve spoken about this Irl, while there are many contenders, the race maybe doesn’t feel broadly competitive as years past — and once critics groups and precursor awards start being doled out, maybe Best Actress locks into a set five or six contenders very quickly. Saoirse Ronan is reflecting on one of her hardest productions ever: 2015’s “Brooklyn.”
The period piece was directed by John Crowley. Former child star Ronan credited the feature for being her first production as an “adult,” but that meant it also came with more than a few growing pains.
“I wanted to leave home but I was very homesick,” Ronan told the Los Angeles Times. “I found it really hard, but I didn’t want to go back — it was literally ‘Brooklyn.’ I hadn’t had anyone push me in the way [John] did before. He treated me like an adult actor and that took me a minute and left me with a bit of a bruise.”
Of course, the plot of “Brooklyn” seemed to mirror Ronan’s personal ordeal. Based on Colm Toibin’s novel of the same name, the film centers on Eilis Lacey (Ronan) as she emigrates from...

Saoirse Ronan is gearing up for a fierce Oscar season, with two performances poised to battle for the industry’s top honors.
Variety confirms Ronan will compete in both the lead actress race for the Sundance hit “The Outrun” and supporting actress for her upcoming work in the World War II epic “Blitz” — potentially setting her up as a double acting nominee this awards season. If double-nominated, which is currently projected on Variety Awards Circuit’s predictions, she would be the 13th person and youngest actor to receive two acting nominations in the same year. Seven of the 12 previous actors went on to win for one of their nominated works.

Gold Derby can now report that Saoirse Ronan is officially making an awards move long expected. The four-time Oscar nominee will campaign as Best Supporting Actress for “Blitz,” avoiding a possible vote split with her other big contender of “The Outrun,” which has her as Best Actress.
From Apple Original Films, “Blitz” has yet to me seen by major critics or festival crowds but is one of this year’s hottest contenders from past Oscar champ Steve McQueen. It will debut at the BFI London Film Festival on October 9. Its theatrical opening is a month later on November 1. And then it’ll be on Apple TV+ starting on November 22.
For this movie, Ronan plays the distraught mother of a young boy (Elliott Heffernan) who goes on a perilous adventure during World War II. It co-stars Harris Dickinson and is written, directed and produced by McQueen. View the trailer below:

Florence Pugh said an interview with British Vogue that she did something this past summer that she’s never done before in her career: Asked to take a break from acting. The Oscar nominee had been working at breakneck speed for several years, filming roles in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune,” Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” and the upcoming A24 romance drama “We Live in Time.” It was time to hit the pause button.
“[It’s] the first time ever in my career when I’ve actually asked for a summer break” Pugh said. “I’m an absolute work maniac, [but] I can see I’m exhausted. I suddenly woke up last year and I was like, ‘I hate how much of my life I’ve missed.’ Yes, I want to have a career forever, but that’s not going to happen if I work myself into the ground.”

John Crowley isn’t exactly a name that inspires confidence in cinephiles. While his immigrant romance Brooklyn was universally acclaimed, his ambitious follow-up — an adaptation of The Goldfinch — was mostly reviled. Crowley’s latest, the A24 romance We Live in Time, feels like a return to form: a poignant romance anchored by strong performances.
We Live in Time Review
We Live in Time follows the relationship of a young couple over several years, from their chance meeting to the obstacles they face when one of them receives a terminal diagnosis. Considering the talent involved, one might expect this to be something ambitious, but it’s pretty straightforward outside of its needlessly convoluted structure. Yet, by aiming low, the film is able to ensure it doesn’t miss.
Indeed, We Live in Time is, in many ways, a standard sappy romantic drama. Its message is a common one for the genre:...

Among today’s young acting talents, few possess the enviable combination of depth and charisma shared by Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, who play to those considerable strengths as a contemporary British couple who find themselves facing a medical crisis in John Crowley’s deeply introspective We Live in Time.
Handed its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Crowley’s 2019 drama, The Goldfinch, was less enthusiastically received, the film eschews a traditional, linear approach to the subject matter in favor of a looser construction that weaves together a vivid patchwork of timeframes and memories to deeply poignant effect.
For thematic inspiration, Crowley takes his cue from the Lou Reed song “Magic and Loss (The Summation),” and especially the lyrics, “There’s a bit of magic in everything and then some loss to even things out,” in navigating the relationship between passionate, ambitious Almut (Pugh) and sensitive, attentive...

This may not be a truth universally acknowledged, but I tend to find that one of the great pleasures in life is getting absolutely bodied by an unremarkable British weepy; in the right hands, a pair of overqualified actors, some very handsome cinematography, and just the right amount of stiff-upper-lip devastation in the face of life’s calamities might be all it takes for a movie to tap into your tear ducts like it’s drilling for oil. In that sense, “We Live in Time” is effectively “Brooklyn” director John Crowley’s “There Will Be Blood.” Which isn’t to say that his latest film dries you out with Daniel Plainview-like relish (this is the kind of love story whose power stems from the stifled catharsis of its sick restraint), only that it seizes on what its slightly pornographic sub-genre has done best since the days of “Brief Encounter”:...

Toronto film festival: there are two excellent performances at the centre of a time-hopping romance that tackles well-trodden ground with maturity
There was a warm late summer surprise to be had with last month’s surprisingly thoughtful and tender adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s supermarket bestseller It Ends With Us. It was a proud and powerful resurrection of the sort of glossy melodrama that had grown terribly unfashionable, mostly demoted to the small screen and almost always the subject of easy derision. Its shock commercial success (nearing $300m globally) will undoubtedly lead to more but already, premiering weeks later at the Toronto film festival, we have another heart-over-head weepie in We Live in Time, a smart and sensitive crowd-pleaser that should prove similarly irresistible to an impassioned yet underserved audience.
There’s also a touch of the golden era Working Title romcom here, before that formula became harder to love and easier to parody.

Almut and Tobias, the two people at the center of the new romance “We Live in Time,” are in many ways the perfect movie couple.
They meet cute when she hits him with her car when he’s coming back in his bathrobe from the store where he went on a midnight run to buy pens so he could sign his divorce papers. They date cute. Pop songs play when they have cute sex. And their cute daughter is born after not one but two separate cute we’re-having-a-baby scenes.
Oh, and she has cancer, which wouldn’t be so cute except for the most perfect of all the things about this perfect couple: They’re played by a perfect pair of actors in Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield.

John Crowley celebrated his North American premiere of “We Live In Time” at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, September 6. The romantic comedy stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh in a decades-long romance about a couple embarking on a path challenged by the limits of time.

You know when you love one actor’s movie or series, you’ll love another similar one? If you liked Inception, you’ll most likely like Shutter Island as well. If you loved Little Women, you’ll also probably like Brooklyn as well. The examples are numerous, and we have plenty to pick from, which is what this report is all about.
This one is going to be focused on Antony Starr, who is best known for playing Homelander in Amazon’s The Boys, but who also has another series that is similarly dark and disturbing, a series that you will most likely love, and a series that the fans are (re)discovering right now.
And while the series in question is not a superhero or a fantasy series – it is a crime drama – it is dark, at times disturbing, and it is very in line with The Boys in several aspects.

Glenn Close has been nominated for eight Academy Awards, and is currently going viral for her work in Lee Daniels’ exorcism flick The Deliverance, but amongst Simpsons fans, the Fatal Attraction star is perhaps best known for voicing Homer’s mom. Mona Simpson was properly introduced in Season Seven’s “Mother Simpson,” which was easily one of the show’s most tearjerkingest episodes.
As you may recall, Homer discovers that his mom isn’t dead, as he originally believed; she’s really a fugitive from the law, due to her Weather Underground-esque activism in the 1960s.
Mona inarguably fleshed the world of The Simpsons for the better, adding emotional nuance to Homer’s character, and providing Lisa with a familial role model. And Close’s touching performance is a big reason why Mona was such a welcome addition to the show.
