Post-covid Lockdown, I took a different approach to comic books.
Throughout my life, I’ve primarily followed Marvel and DC Comics, with the occasional dabbling in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I even enjoyed comics based on licensed franchises such as cartoons during my childhood.
But after the world opened up again, I felt something was missing. The way I consumed comics began to change.
Where was that excitement to turn the page? Why had I begun to feel less giddy as my eyes darted from panel to panel? The writing and the art were fascinating, but I needed to step outside of this comfort zone I’d lived in. I’ll always be a true believer in truth, justice, and a better tomorrow, but I wanted to step beyond.
I wanted stories that went against the norm. No capes, no cowls, just experiences. Bizarre. Relatable. Gritty. Wholesome. So, I took the dip.

Comic artist Mike Mignola has an impressive portfolio (enough to literally fill an art gallery), but he'll be most remembered for creating comic book hero Hellboy.
Simultaneously a superhero, paranormal detective, and a monster himself, Hellboy's destiny is to end the world, but he'd much rather unwind with a smoke and drink after a hard day at work fighting demons. Hellboy and the world he inhabits is a delicious stew of everything Mignola finds compelling as an artist: horror flicks, ghost stories, and pulp fantasy. The enormous shared setting of "Hellboy" spin-off comics is like an H.P. Lovecraft story retold by Jack Kirby.
Recent documentary "Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters" tells its subject's life story, of which Hellboy occupies a big chunk. Across extensive interviews with Mignola, his collaborators, and his fans, they agree that his vision for Hellboy crystalized with...

HBO has greenlit the limited series “Dtf St. Louis” with Jason Bateman and David Harbour set for two of the lead roles, Variety has learned.
HBO has given the series a seven-episode order. The show was originally announced as being in development back in 2022 with Harbour and Pedro Pascal attached to star and executive produce. The project was originally inspired by the James Lasdun New Yorker article “My Dentist’s Murder Trial: Adultery, False Identities, and a Lethal Sedation.”
However, according to an individual with knowledge of the project, the creative direction of the series evolved over time and is now based on a wholly original idea with no connection to the original article. In addition, Pascal is no longer attached in any capacity. He remains in business with HBO, though, with the second season of “The Last of Us” set to debut in 2025.

Horror is one of the many genres that audiences love to digest. It's particularly prominent in cinema and on television, with horror movies and TV shows enjoying a lot of success over the past few decades. In fact, I recently put together a list recommending some horror movies and TV shows based on comic books.
But there are also plenty of horror comic books, too. With that in mind, I'd now like to focus on the comics that inspired many of the movies and shows from the previous list. So, without further adieu, here's some horror comic book recommendations for spooky season.
A note that this list is in no particular order!

The Big Bang Theory, with its amazing ensemble of actors and funny storylines, has kept the audience hooked to the screens for several decades now. While the sitcom ended all the way back in 2019, it still continues to enjoy a huge fan following. Initially, when it came out, it was viewed as just another sitcom with the same premise and characters.

When the "Frasier" revival series on Paramount+ was announced but costar David Hyde Pierce, who plays Frasier's neurotic younger brother Niles, was missing entirely, things felt a little out of place. At the time, Pierce said that he simply wasn't interested in playing the character again, and he had moved on in his career. That might sound like he had some negative feelings about his time on "Frasier" and maybe even his main co-worker, Kelsey Grammer (who played Frasier), but thankfully, that couldn't be further from the truth.
In an interview with Forbes, Pierce, who recently starred in "The Exorcism" with Russell Crowe, shared his feelings on not only Grammer's immense talents but also how the other actor helped him in his own journey as a performer. It turns out that while Pierce doesn't have much desire to return to the role of Niles, he does have a lot of...

Ever since Covid, predicting what a movie will make at the domestic box office has become increasingly difficult. Many expected hits have flopped, while plenty of titles have massively exceeded expectations.
In the case of Venom: The Last Dance, it looks set to fall somewhere in the middle despite Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage being surprise hits in 2018 and 2021, respectively.
Current estimations from Deadline point to a $21 million Friday (including $8.5 million from Thursday previews) for an opening weekend somewhere between $50 million - $55 million. That's a pretty noteworthy drop from those initial $65 million expectations.
In better news for Sony, Venom: The Last Dance is exceeding expectations overseas, in no small part thanks to China.
The trade suggests that the L.A. Dodgers' first battle in 43 years with the New York Yankees in the World Series is a major contributing factor. It's also theorised that Sony Pictures will be looking...

If one were to be asked what a superhero looks like, they would probably describe them as being tall, having a long flowing cape, piercing yet gentle features, etc. One wouldn't usually give their hero a tail, horns, and blazing red skin, but the world of superheroes and comics, in general, have given readers two demon heroes fighting against the darkness.
One is Hellboy, an original creation by writer and artist Mike Mignola for Dark Horse Comics, and the other is Etrigan the Demon, who was created a couple of decades before Hellboy by the King of Comics himself, Jack Kirby for DC Comics. These two represent that not all heroes are found to be on the side of the angels or even humans, but they, especially Hellboy, have become very iconic in the realms of comics, movies, and beyond.
But what would happen if these two demonic entities ever crossed paths?...

Stephen King is primarily a prose writer, but he loves comic books too. He's dipped his toes into the graphic medium, contributing to 1985 one-shot "Heroes for Hope: Starring the X-Men" (a "comic jam" featuring writing from Alan Moore and George R. R. Martin too), and co-writing the horror comic "American Vampire" with Scott Snyder.
Before those, King's eighth novel — "Firestarter" — was him telling a superhero story in the horror space. "Firestarter" follows the McGees, a father (Andy) and daughter (Charlie) on the run from a government agency called the Shop. Years prior, Andy and his wife Vicky volunteered for experiments with the drug Lot 6, which turned him into a psychic and made Charlie born a "firestarter," able to spark flames with a thought.
King's seventh novel, "The Dead Zone," was about a man gaining clairvoyance and ultimately trying to assassinate a political candidate he foresees causing a nuclear war. "Firestarter" feels like a spiritual sequel,...

The most recent Hellboy project is Brian Taylor's adaptation of Hellboy: The Crooked Man, making it the third live action Hellboy audiences will see since Ron Perlman brought the Right Hand of Doom back in the first Guillermo Del Toro film. He returned for a second outing before the decision was made to reboot the franchise.
Those del Toro films have become beloved amongst fans of the original comic and regular moviegoers alike, with the end of the second film teasing the things to come for the characters. Sadly, it's been almost fifteen years since that last film, and during that time the character of Hellboy has been rebooted twice, first with the critically panned 2019 simply titled Hellboy starring David Harbour, and now The Crooked Man adaptation with Jack Kesy the newest actor to take the mantle of Hellboy. Ron Pearlman is still looked at as the benchmark for playing Hellboy across his many iterations. Be it games, films, or animation, Pearlman remains the quintessential Hellboy for an entire generation, especially with Guillermo Del Toro helming the film.

However, Jack Kelsy, who will be essaying the third iteration of the live-action Hellboy, had an idea about the character that is more than a little true, especially for characters in the comic book medium. Mike Mignola’s award-winning comic franchise “Hellboy” has been adapted into four motion pictures now, and this may be a controversial statement, but there’s never been a bad one. Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy” movies were ambitious and beautiful, especially “The Golden Army,” which ranks among his finest works. Neil Marshall’s “Hellboy” reboot stripped away the classiness and focused instead on the series’ freewheeling wildness, an unfocused but enjoyably weird adaptation. It isn’t popular but that doesn’t make it bad. Give it time. It’ll find its audience.
The new reboot, Brian Taylor’s “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” will need more than time to find its fanbase. The cheapest entry in the series (by a wide margin) was released in Europe to little fanfare a month ago, then dumped on VOD in the United States this week when nobody was looking. The Writers Guild of America has issued an edict: do not work for Millennium Films.
The production company, which initially formed as an offshoot of 1980s schlock house Cannon Films, is behind the “Expendables” franchise and other low budget action movie fare like “The Hitman’s Wife” (and its sequel), “Olympus Has Fallen” (and its two sequels) and the two latter “Hellboy” revivals.
The note the WGA sent out to its members states that the company is “not signatory to the 2023 Mba,” which runs for three years. The guild says that Millennium has repeatedly not paid writers on time or provided them with owed residual payments. Members who have been contacted by Millennium for work are urged to reach out to the guild’s legal department.

The Writers Guild of America West has an issue with the company behind The Expendables franchise and Has Fallen films. WGA West president Meredith Stiehm and other leaders Wednesday sent a “Do Not Work” order to members about writing for Rambo producer Avi Lerner’s Millennium Pictures.
“The Guild has had to bring a significant number of claims against Millennium over the years for the company’s failure to pay writers initial compensation and residuals, as well as failure to pay writers within the timeframe established in the Mba,” the memo states (read it in full below). “The Guild has determined that Millennium is not financially responsible and requires the posting of an adequate bond before it can become signatory. Millennium Films did not immediately respond to Deadline’s request for comment; we will update this post if and when we hear back.
Millennium has, to date, refused to do so.”

The Writers Guild of America is telling its members not to work for Millennium Films, the production company behind the “Expendables” franchise.
In a memo sent to WGA members and obtained by IndieWire, the guild says Millennium is not a signatory to the 2023 contract and that it has a history of failing to pay writers both compensation and residuals on time.
“The Guild has determined that Millennium is not financially responsible and requires the posting of an adequate bond before it can become signatory. Millennium has, to date, refused to do so,” the guild’s leaders wrote in part. “It is crucial that Millennium be prevented from undercutting writers’ standards and conditions. Until there is resolution, Millennium cannot be allowed to benefit from writing services provided by WGA members.”
The guild adds that you should contact the WGA if you’ve been approached or employed by Millennium since May 1, 2023.

While “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” is a relatively low-budget reboot, it remains hard to parse its $20 million price tag. It has the look of YouTube fan film — not to mention the excess fidelity, aping the story beats of Mike Mignola’s eponymous comic to a tee. Mignola’s screenwriting credit is therefore unsurprising, but that director Brian Taylor was at all involved is an astonishing tidbit. One half of the duo behind high-octane films like “Crank” and “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”, Taylor has made several movies that get by on momentum and gusto. “The Crooked Man,” however, features neither.
Following Ron Perlman and David Harbor — two actors exceptionally suited for the role of Hellboy — actor Jack Kesy plays a more passive incarnation of the paranormal agent. If he quips, he does so subtly, and if he recalls secrets from his past, they don’t affect him very much in the present.

Plot: Hellboy and a rookie B.P.R.D. agent in the 1950s are sent to the Appalachians, where they discover a remote community dominated by witches and led by the sinister local demon, the Crooked Man.
Review: The Hellboy series has struggled ever since its inception. It was never financial dynamite for the studio, despite its clear fanbase. So now filmmakers are taking a different approach. Hellboy: The Crooked Man is much more in line with the graphic novels from Mike Mignola than anything we’ve seen before. He’s more of a paranormal detective with the scope being much more street-level. There are still fantastical creatures to fight, but it’s more location shooting and less crazy action set pieces. This is certainly not the Guillermo Del Toro movies, which went for a more large-scale, fantastical world. And it really worked for me!

Despite an evocative atmosphere and a rewarding embrace of folk horror, Brian Taylor’s take on the big, red paranormal detective feels creatively lost in limbo.
Hellboy is a promising property that’s periodically stumbled with its live-action adaptations. There’s such a rich world to pull from here that brilliantly mashes together Lovecraftian horror, pulp detective fiction, superhero storytelling, and sprawling adventures. At the same time, it takes a delicate hand to properly bring all these elements together into something that’s not only coherent, but entertaining. Hellboy’s cinematic offerings continue to mutate and hold a mirror up to changing pop culture trends. Hellboy versus witches in a haunted house, from the director of Crank and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, should be an easy home run. This is exactly why it’s so frustrating that Hellboy: The Crooked Man is such a generic and forgettable experience — as an action film,...

Unless you’re a hardcore Disney fan, you probably don’t remember the short-lived attraction “The ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter.” A theatrical experience that ran briefly in the 1990s in Florida’s Magic Kingdom, it garnered many complaints from crowds about its intensity. Browsing message boards and YouTube comments, many people still talk about how traumatizing the show was. Of course, it might seem quaint today, but at the time, its use of binaural sound and 4D effects was revolutionary.
Luckily, audiences will have a chance to see for themselves — sort of — with Trepany House’s parody production of “Alien Encounter,” created by Adam Franklin and Amit Itelman and sponsored by Titmouse, now running every weekend in October at the Titmouse Warehouse in Hollywood. But there will be blood. In fact, the press release comes with a warning — or a promise, if you’re into that kind of thing — stating: “Audiences Will Be Covered In Blood,...

Mexican-born auteur Guillermo del Toro hit the Oscar jackpot with his fantastical love story “The Shape of Water” (2017), which took home four prizes including Best Picture and Best Director. But that’s just one of many eye-popping fantasies he has crafted throughout his career. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of del Toro’s films, ranked worst to best.
Del Toro made his feature directing debut with the Spanish-language horror drama “Cronos” (1993), which established him as a maker of dark, visually-stunning fright-fests. The film wrote him a ticket to Hollywood, where he helmed the creepy chiller “Mimic” (1997). Over the next two decades, he would bounce back-and-forth between mainstream American productions and more personal stories in his native language.
It was for “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006), a fable about a young Mexican girl escaping into a terrifying fantasy realm during the falangist Spain of 1944, that del Toro reaped his first Oscar bid for Best Original Screenplay.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man has arrived in theaters in the United Kingdom, with a VOD release in the United States planned as well. The movie has been seen by people in early screenings, with the overall reactions being mixed with both positive and negative reviews. Since then, however, the reviews have leaned in the negative direction.
With the movie out there in the world now, the question remains: What's next for Hellboy and the world of Hellboy at large?
Will the Crooked Man cast return for another installment?

With his decades of work in the movie industry, Richard Linklater brought several coming-of-age movies and shows. Out of the lot, Dazed and Confused would definitely stand the tallest given the huge ensemble it boasted. The film was released in 1993 and featured the likes of Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, and Renée Zellweger, to name a few.

Last year, we heard that Spyder Dobrofsky – who worked on the scripts for such flicks as The Housewives of the North Pole and One Christmas Wish, as well as Mom’s Day Away, and made his feature directorial debut with the mystery thriller Spiral – was making a holiday horror movie called Down Below and had assembled a solid cast for the project: the legendary Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight) stars alongside Bai Ling (The Crow), Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect), and Doug Jones, who is best known for his creature (or heavily made up) performances in films like The Shape of Water, Hellboy, and Hocus Pocus. Now, Down Below has been sent out into the world, as it was given a digital release this week and is available to rent or purchase on Amazon’s Prime Video at This Link.

Made before the current super hero cycle reached sickening saturation, Guillermo del Toro’s two films Hellboy in 2004 and Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008 introduced the world to Mike Mignola’s half demon anti-hero that first appeared way back in Dark Horse Comics in the 90’s.
Starring the perfectly cast Ron Perlman the movies blended del Toro’s eye for horror with equal parts of action and felt fresh and exciting at a time when comic book movies were still very hit and miss.
Never completing their intended trilogy, both Perlman and del Toro left the character behind when the production company upset them both. It wasn’t until 2019 that Hellboy returned, this time with David Harbour in the big red suit with Neil Marshall at the helm.

An adaptation of the classic Mary Shelley novel Frankenstein has long been a dream project for director Guillermo del Toro, the filmmaker with such credits as Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, Hellboy, and Blade II. He’s been talking about it for at least 17 years – and now he’s actually making it! After previous attempts to get the project going fell through, Netflix stepped up to let del Toro make the Frankenstein movie he’s been dreaming of. They haven’t announced a release date for the film yet, but while we wait for that news to come along, here’s Everything We Know About Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein:
Long Road To Production
Del Toro has named Frankenstein as his favorite novel, and in 2007, he told us that the project he “would kill to make” is a faithful “Miltonian tragedy” version of Frankenstein. He said that he...

Hellboy’s back in cinemas with The Crooked Man, but its budget is drastically reduced from its 2000s heyday. A shrinking home video market may be the reason.
There was a crooked man who walked a crooked mile… presumably so he could share top billing in Hellboy: The Crooked Man, which snuck into UK cinemas on the 27th September.
For fans of the source comics, seeing the antihero back on the big screen after the disappointment of 2019’s Hellboy reboot – a film even its director Neil Marshall, publicly disowned – will be at least some cause for celebration. But what’s noteworthy about Hellboy: The Crooked Man (directed by Crank co-director Brian Taylor) is just how small-scale it looks compared to the visually sumptuous movies director Guillermo del Toro served up in the 2000s.

"Hellboy: The Crooked Man" is the second movie reboot of the demonic superhero, this time played by Jack Kesy. Hellboy was created by writer/artist Mike Mignola in 1993 and has since starred in countless comics published at Dark Horse. A demon named Anung Un Rama, Hellboy was summoned to Earth in the final days of World War II by the Nazi operation Project Ragna Rok. Instead of becoming the Third Reich's ultimate weapon, however, he was adopted by the American Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) and is the bureau's top agent.
Hellboy is half a fantasy pulp hero, half a procedural detective; most of his stories are short and small-scale, and he faces supernatural horrors with the same attitude an exterminator does a wasp nest. "The Crooked Man" — following Hellboy fighting a sadistic ghost in the Appalachian mountains — looks like it had some good ideas.

Born from the creative mind of Mike Mignola, Hellboy first entered our world in the early 1990s in comic book form. The character quickly amassed a devoted following for his unique blend of supernatural action and offbeat humor. Over the next decade, Mignola expanded Hellboy’s world through additional titles set in the same universe.
In 2004, visionary director Guillermo del Toro brought Hellboy to the big screen for the first time. Starring Ron Perlman in the title role, del Toro’s film introduced new audiences to Mignola’s creation in spectacular fashion. It proved such a hit that a sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, arrived in 2008. While both delivered imaginative battles and imaginative visuals, some fans felt the adaptations drifted too far from the source material’s grittier edge.
Fast forward to 2024, and Hellboy has returned once more. This time, Brian Taylor serves as director, co-writing the script alongside Mike Mignola.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man's unconventional release has seen it arrive in a seemingly random list of countries around the world; in the U.S., it's bypassing theaters altogether and will instead head straight to Digital platforms early next month.
The movie was reportedly made for a relatively small sum, meaning there's at least a chance it turns a profit. Will that be anywhere near enough to warrant a sequel? Seeing as it's skipping theaters and isn't receiving overly positive reviews, we're not banking on it.
Apparently, neither are the movie's producers. We're used to comic book movies having some extra at the very end to set up future stories but can confirm today that Hellboy: The Crooked Man does not feature any post-credits scenes.
In fact, there's nothing - not even a "Hellboy will return" - to suggest there are plans in place for Big Red moving forward. Then again,...

A boring nemesis in a top hat bops around cackling while a wan Hellboy is enlisted to save a local man’s sweetheart in this inexplicable successor
Fans of comic books, 00s horror and Guillermo del Toro will recall the latter’s crack at launching a mass-market franchise with Hellboy in 2004, a peppy blend of pulp genre thrills, wisecracks and old-school effects with a very del Torovian occult-vibe. The casting in the title role of Ron Perlman as the half-demon/half-human shorn-horned, red-skinned, wisecracking, cigar-smoking good guy, along with Selma Blair as his pale but decidedly interesting sidekick/love interest Liz, is what made the first film, and to a lesser degree its successor Hellboy II: The Golden Army, sing. But the unholy mess of a reboot from 2019, this time with a not-unlikeable David Harbour in the massive Right Hand of Doom glove, barely made coin, which makes this even lower-budgeted successor somewhat inexplicable.

In keeping with the movie's stripped-down approach, the new horror-based Hellboy movie, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, won't be raining hellfire and brimstone down upon movie theaters. Instead, it's coming straight home, where screens are also smaller. Comicbook.com reported earlier today that Crooked Man will be available on video on demand on October 8. Sadly,...

The latest Hellboy film, titled “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” will debut on Video on Demand platforms in the United States on October 7, according to its producers. Directed by Brian Taylor, the movie follows Hellboy and a rookie Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense agent as they investigate a community of witches in 1950s Appalachia.
Jack Kesy takes on the role of Hellboy, previously played by Ron Perlman and David Harbour. He stars alongside Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell, Leah McNamara, and Hannah Margetson. Christopher Golden, Mike Mignola, and Brian Taylor collaborated on the screenplay. Mignola created the original Hellboy comic books.
While American audiences will be able to watch it at home, the movie will show for one week starting September 27 in select UK theaters. Production finished in May after beginning earlier in 2023 in Bulgaria. A quick production schedule may aim to attract interest following the poorly received 2019 reboot.

From One Piece to Bleach, most anime are jumping on the bandwagon of live-action adaptations. Kentaro Miura wished for his series’ live-action adaptation. However, with his untimely and sudden death, this remained unfulfilled. The mangaka pictured Guillermo Del Toro as the perfect director to recreate Berserk.

However, there has been no confirmation of a live-action movie so far. While Toro hasn’t made an official statement, there might be an alternative. Although it may not live up to Miura’s wish, Quentin Tarantino could direct the movie. Furthermore, the acclaimed director would notch up the adaptation.
Quentin Tarantino would bring out the explicit and dark nature of Berserk through his direction.
Quentin Tarantino is one of the most celebrated directors in Hollywood. His notable works include Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, and Kill Bill. His movies outline blood, gore, and violence perfectly.

For many years now, Guillermo del Toro has been trying to create an adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft’s classic 1936 novella, At the Mountains of Madness. The possibility of his project has caught the attention of many, and for good reason. The story that the book follows is interesting in several ways, being a magnificent meeting point for horror and the lost abyss of the universe.

Bringing an Oscar-winning director into the equation only adds to the film’s appeal, with the styles and storytelling methods that del Toro has come to be known for. There were also several big names said to be a part of the project. This was 15 years ago, and not much has been heard about the film.
That was, until now, as the director has just given the biggest sign of hope to those who have been looking forward to the film for decades.

Netflix is removing 34 movies and TV shows from the streaming service in October 2024, and we have the full list of titles that are set to expire.
Unfortunately, this is a monthly occurrence for the streamer, and there’s always a few fan faves included. Often, it’s due to licensing deals expiring and sometimes, titles will often end up popping up on other streamers.
There are some horror films being removed, so if you’re in the Halloween spirit, you might want to watch some of the Chucky franchise titles before they’re taken away! Other notable titles leaving include Save the Last Dance, the Magic Mike films, Jack Reacher films, Crazy Rich Asians, and more.
