My horror adventures always take me to such interesting places, so I suppose it was only a matter of time before I ended up in an old WWII Japanese underground bunker found in the wilds of Indonesia. Go hunting for Yamashita’s Gold they said. It’ll be totally safe they said. Well what they didn’t say was mutated science experiments still inhabit the mine who aren’t too keen on accepting visitors. Damn, the treasure hunting game sure is getting dangerous these days, but it’s not that unexpected as Dead Mine is just another “greedy young dick leads a crack team of specialists into a dangerous location looking for riches but instead finds evil monsters who don’t take kindly to their presence” film. You know, the usual.
Coming off his first directorial effort Mum & Dad, writer/director Steven Sheil has once again drifted into very specific genre territory with Dead Mine.

Any film that dares to tread on shaky ground is a risky financial move. Its not uncommon to spot an outlandish flick that exercises some ludicrous ideas but when it happens the features often fail nine times out of 10 debut on the SyFy channel. Steven Sheils Dead Mine breaks the mold in the sense that therere some outlandish wheels successfully moving this vehicle forward but the chances of seeing it pop up on one of the most infamous cable networks seems highly unlikely. Theres enough substance here to invest a strong push from distributors. The story itself is really rather simple its the execution that deserves high marks. A group comprised of explorers and soldiers enter an abandoned mine in search of gold. However...

*full disclosure: an online screening of this film was provided by XLrator Media. Director: Steven Sheil. Cast: Miko Mizumo, Sam Hazeldine, and Joe Taslim. Dead Mine is the first film that this film fan has seen from Indonesia. Much of this country's beautiful landscape is shown early in the film. And, director Steven Sheil (Mum & Dad) captures some of the Asian mystique of this country, too. The horror elements are also on the screen. Taking place in an old pre-World War II mine, there are things waiting below, for a team of would-be treasure-hunters. This mine is mazelike and the many settings in this feature create for some of the film's ominous mood. There is a lot to fear in this title. And because of the surprises, Dead Mine is one of the best indie horror films to come out this year. The premise for the film is a simple one.

Joe Taslim, star of Gareth Evans’ smash-hit The Raid (our review), has been cast in The Fast and the Furious 6.
Taslim will feature opposite Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, and more in the sixth-quel. His character has been described as a “cold blooded killer who uses martial arts and parkour skills to fight the Fast crew”.
Not much is known about the plot, but we do know that screenwriter Chris Morgan penned the script and Justin Lin is returning to the directors chair after Fast Five grossed an astounding $626M at the worldwide box office.
Universal Pictures have already scheduled a May 24, 2013 release for the adrenaline-fuelled action sequel, with production currently underway at various locations around the world.
Taslim will next be seen in Steven Sheil’s Dead Mine before returning to his role as Jaka in Evans’ The Raid sequel Berandal.

Dead Mine is an upcoming film from director Steven Sheil (Mum and Dad) that features treasure hunters in the Indonesian jungle. They are searching for Yamashita's Gold and Yamashita is an actual figure from history. He was a Japanese Naval officer and later Commander-in-Chief of the entire Japanese Navy. So, it is not hard to fathom that Yamashita had wealth of some sorts. Will the looters find his buried wealth?
That is an answer that film fans will have to wait for and another question involves the film's genre. Is this a horror film or thriller? Likely, Dead Mine is a combination of both genres. With Sheil already comfortable with horror in his picture Mum and Dad, then it is likely that this feature will also house some elements of horror. As well, the title gives some clues to its genre. Hopefully, Dead Mine is both horrifying and thrilling as a horror movie should be.
