The Weinstein Company previously owned it but following the allegations against Harvey Weinstein is was shelved. Later when the company went bankrupt it was acquired by a new company. The director did not like the cut of the film that the Weinstein's produced and previously released which was very badly received when it premiered at previous film festivals, so he made his own cut of it and is now releasing it, hence the new name " The directors cut ", which has to be legally placed after the name to differentiate it from the original release. This new cut is said to have more of an edge to it and points out the cruel measures both Edison and Westinghouse went to in order to win the war at hand. The previous cut was said to show Edison as more of a kind man, something he in reality was not.
