Greece’s Homemade Films has boarded Mahdi Fleifel’s upcoming feature “Men in the Sun,” currently in the final stages of development. The story, set in Athens, will deal with masculinity, exile and loss, showing young refugees in their 20s hustling to survive in the urban pressure cooker.

The company is also ready to start shooting Sofia Exarchou’s “Animal,” co-producing with Nabis Filmgroup, Ars Ltd., Digital Cube and Felony Productions.

Furthermore, its founder Maria Drandaki recently presented new projects at Venice Gap-Financing Market. “Arcadia,” directed by Yorgos Zois, will see Homemade Films joining forces with Foss Production and Red Carpet. “Titanic Ocean” by Konstantina Kotzamani will be shot in Japan and Singapore in 2023.

“Hesperides” proves once again that Sky Ring is the best thing that ever happened to The 100’s storytelling. It continues the seventh and final season’s high bar of storytelling, even if a decision to go for a juicy, plot-twist ending completely trashes what little character development there was for Echo.

The opening act of the show is a lovely wordless version of a lifetime together in the space of just a few minutes. In a way, it’s a heartbreak that we don’t get to see Dev again, but that’s also the kind of story choice where I’m willing to have my heart broken.

For this week’s home media releases, we have a ton of indie horror on tap, with both Wild Eye Releasing and Gravitas Ventures leading the pack with a variety of titles. Probably the most intriguing movie coming home this week has to be Caroushell, but Wild Eye is also putting out a few other films under both of their labels, including House of Ravens, Beaten to a Pulp, and Open Wound. From Gravitas, we have both Arcadia and Beast of the Water to look forward to, and Unearthed Films is bringing the disturbing Dis to both Blu-ray and DVD as well.

The Museum of Modern Art has unveiled the full festival lineup for the 18th edition of Doc Fortnight, an annual showcase of the best in nonfiction film. The movies cover a range of topics, touching on everything from the cinematic legacy of Wyatt Earp to a deep look at Ferguson, Missouri, the Midwestern city that exploded into national consciousness when Michael Brown was shot by a police officer.

This year’s festival, which runs from Feb. 21 to 28 and boasts more than 17 documentary features, the bulk of which were directed by female filmmakers. That choice is an important one, because it comes at a time when attention is being focused on the film industry for failing to provide more directing opportunities to women.

Broadway’s Brian d’Arcy James will join the cast of Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman next month, leading a largely new company of replacement players in the primary adult roles beginning Tuesday, Feb. 19.

D’Arcy James will take over the role of Quinn Carney from departing cast member Paddy Considine. The actor is one of 15 new cast members announced by producers Sonia Friedman Productions and Neal Street Productions today.

All of the announced newcomers begin next month except for Orange is the New Black‘s Blair Brown, who takes over the role of Aunt Maggie Far Away from Fionnula Flanagan on Tuesday, April 16.

The one thing you’re guaranteed with a Will Ferrell comedy is a certain juvenile ambience that takes no brain power to watch, one where you can sit back on a Friday night and put the stresses of the week behind you. The brand new trailer for The House, where Amy Poehler stars as his onscreen wife, has all the exact same ingredients you would expect for this comedy concoction.

Making his feature film directorial debut on the picture is Andrew Jay Cohen who served as co-writer on Zac Efron’s Bad Neighbours and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Cohen also co-wrote this project alongside his writing partner Brendan O’Brien so we are guessing the comedy antics of The House won’t veer too far away from what has already worked for them.

At 11 years old, Ty Simpkins already has quite a few credits on his resume. Simpkins has been in movies since he was barely 3 months old, and has roles in flicks such as Insidious, The Next Three Days, and Little Children. Maybe even more interesting is how many times he's been cast in films with his real life sister Ryan Simpkins - they play siblings in Revolutionary Road, Pride and Glory and Arcadia, among others.

But for Iron Man 3, Ty's first action movie, he goes it alone. Ty plays Harley Keener, an intelligent kid who has a run-in with Iron Man and actually helps him save the day.

John Hawkes looks to turn in another superb, understated performance in Arcadia. The story revolves around Hawkes' distressed father who packs up his three kids and moves them cross-country to Arcadia, California. What starts out as a regular ole road trip takes a turn when the children start asking questions about where their mother is. Last week, when Cannes announced its all-male list of competition directors, I was in a room in Florida filled with 25 talented women directors, producers, writers and distributors. This was the second annual Side By Side Symposium organized by Holly Herrick, director of Sarasota Film Festival Women (and former programmer at Sff). Along with the ongoing Through Women’s Eyes program of women's issues documentaries, this new program contributes to making Sarasota a primary film festival destination for women. We made it to Berlin and back in one piece. Melanie and I were at the Berlinale for the world premiere of Francine, our first narrative feature starring Melissa Leo. We couldn’t have possibly predicted the response to the film, which has been overwhelmingly positive. Francine showed in the festival’s Forum section, and sold out all four of its screenings before we even premiered. Melissa made the trip out to Berlin, and we were fortunate enough to have had several lively and very engaged Q&A sessions. The Berlin International Film Festival, also called the Berlinale, is one of the world’s leading film festivals and most reputable media events. 2012 marks the first year Sound On Sight was present to attend. Founded in West Berlin in 1951, the festival has been celebrated annually in February since 1978. With 274,000 tickets sold and 487,000 admissions it is considered the largest publicly-attended film festival worldwide. Up to 400 films are shown in several sections, but only a select twenty compete for the awards called the Golden and Silver Bears. This year the Italian film Caesar Must Die took home the Berlin International Film Festival’s top honour as best film. Berlinale is, on the whole, a quieter festival than your really “big” outings — Sundance, Cannes, Toronto, even Nyff or Venice — but my interest is nevertheless piqued by this year’s winners, a list which comes to us from IndieWIRE. Most Anticipated Films of 2012 #31-40 Looking over the list of the films set to hit theaters in 2012 I feel like a kid in a candy shop. There's so much to choose from, how do I pick just one? Fortunately I didn't have to choose just one, I chose 40, but even that proved to be a tough task as boiling down a year's worth of movies into an arbitrary number of films that I am anticipating is always difficult. Something is always going to be left off. Then again, that just leaves more to be discovered. #05. Arcadia - Olivia Silver Besides the labs, you'll often hear about how Sundance supports young filmmakers in the creative process. As case in point, they often select a short film and a couple of years later re-invite the filmmaker when a feature film version of the given short is made. Last year we had Little Birds and Pariah, and if finished in time (filming was completed in September), this year we could find the feature version based on Olivia Silver's 209 accepted short Little Canyon (see pic above - watch here).
