Everyone dreams of fame—the spotlight, the fans, the idea that people would wait hours just to catch a glimpse of you. But sometimes, that fame becomes a curse. Sam Yates’s latest film, “Magpie” (2024), dips deep into this tricky territory. It tells the story of a family over the moon when their young daughter lands a role in a big-budget movie. The chance feels like a dream come true, but as the lights get brighter, it starts to threaten to tear their lives apart.
Magpie (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis: What’s Happening in Ben and Anette’s Life?
Ben and Anette can hardly contain their excitement when they learn their daughter Matilda nailed her audition and landed a part in a major film. After years of marriage and two kids—Matilda and Logan—the couple decided to leave the city behind, settling into the quiet of the countryside. Ben,...

Daisy Ridley's new thriller ‘Magpie’ “changed quite a lot” after she pitched her ideas to husband Tom Bateman. The 32-year-old actress appears in the noir flick as lonely mother Anette - whose husband becomes infatuated by a famous movie star as he chaperones their young daughter on a film set - and now Ridley has revealed the project underwent major changes after she presented it to her partner, who she co-wrote the picture with, with Anette becoming the focal point of the plot.Speaking to Dread Central, Ridley said: “It changed quite a lot. I had an initial idea about an actress infiltrating a family, and told Tom and we started developing it.“And he just said he was much more drawn to Anette being the centre of the story. Once he made that decision I was like, ‘Sounds great!’ He just said the story sort of flowed out from there.

The first season of Bad Sisters was an unexpected hit for Apple TV+, earning fans and four Emmy nominations. Now in its sophomore season — a feat not achieved by the Belgian show on which it was based — the darkly comedic mystery is struggling to find its own identity, having problems in its attempt to expand the world while staying in line with what worked about the acclaimed first season.
Bad Sisters Season 2 Review
Season 2 of Bad Sisters picks up years after the Garvey sisters have moved on from the “accidental” death of one sister’s abusive husband, as new evidence — and a new suspicious death — causes the authority to start asking questions again. If this second season of Bad Sisters deserves credit for one thing, it’s that it doesn’t feel like it’s simply re-hashing the same beats that happened in the previous season; however, the new direction...

Magpie, directed by Sam Yeats, is an entertaining, compelling British neo-noir thriller that will frustrate you at first, but it comes with a riveting ending. The film focuses on domestic drama and deceit in marriage. Daisy Ridley is brilliant as Anette, the frustrated wife of an untrustworthy husband. Even though she does not verbally communicate her frustration, her expressions effectively convey her emotions. Shazad Latif is convincing as the deceitful husband Ben. Anette was over the moon when her daughter Matilda was selected to play a role in a film, but it soon turned into her worst nightmare. Her husband Ben started to get obsessed with Matilda’s co-star, Alicia. He started to fantasize about her from the moment he came across a leaked explicit video of her online. It was not just her husband’s obsession with another woman that bothered Anette, but his complete lack of interest in...

Recently, we learned that a planned Star Wars sequel that would follow Rey (Daisy Ridley) after the events of her trilogy was going through some changes behind the scenes: Steven Knight, best known as the creator of the Netflix show Peaky Blinders, was leaving as the movie's screenwriter. And this after celebrated writer Damon Lindelof was "asked to leave" the project a while back. Should we add this to the pile of Star Wars projects Disney has started up and then abandoned, alongside the never-made projects from the likes of Taika Waititi, Kevin Feige, Patty Jenkins, Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss?
Well, star Daisy Ridley is out here doing very light damage control; she was asked about the Rey movie while promoting her new film Magpie and took the opportunity to dispel some rumors, for instance the rumor that losing Knight means the...

With a new Harry Potter adaptation on the cards, the casting directors have a huge challenge ahead of them. Considering how iconic the cast of the Harry Potter movies was, which involved the likes of Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliff, Ralph Fiennes, etc, the potential actors for the upcoming series will have some huge shoes to fill.

While it can’t be said for certain about what the creative heads at HBO have stored in mind for the original saga’s retelling, Daisy Ridley could be a great fit, given her love for the franchise.

Magpie stars Daisy Ridley (Star Wars) and Shazad Latif (Profile) as a couple whose seemingly idyllic life is thrown astray when their daughter is cast in a film alongside an attractive young actress. The film’s story was created by Ridley, and the screenplay was written by her husband, Tom Bateman (Murder on the Orient Express), making this a very… unique husband-and-wife collaboration.
We at FandomWire got to speak with Tom Bateman about Magpie and making the jump from acting to screenwriting. Check out the interview below!

FandomWire: One of my favorite things about Magpie is that it subverts the classic trope of the femme fatale. How do you think the film challenges the audience’s expectations in this way?
Tom Bateman: I’m so glad you picked up on that because it was one of the initial driving forces behind me really loving this idea that Daisy had.

It’s quietly been a stellar year for Daisy Ridley.
She began 2024 with the critically acclaimed offbeat dramedy Sometimes I Think About Dying, only to follow it up with arguably the finest performance of her career as legendary swimmer Gertrude Ederle in Young Woman and the Sea. And she concludes this period of time with her most personal work to date, Magpie, a modern noir that she conceived and produced.
Directed by Sam Yates, the well-received Magpie chronicles the fractured marriage of Annette (Ridley) and Ben (Shazad Latif), all while their young daughter Matilda (Hiba Ahmed) acts in a period piece film. Ben, who volunteered to look after his daughter on set, then becomes infatuated with Alicia Romano (Matilda Lutz), the Italian star who’s playing Matilda’s mom in the fictional film within the film. Ben’s wandering eye is well-known, so Annette must finally decide whether she’s...

Exclusive: Like the name of a band or title of a great album, the moniker given to a production company can come loaded with meaning.
“I wanted to make it something personal, rather than just cool-sounding and generic,” James Norton explains when asked about Rabbit Track Pictures, the film and TV production company he runs with Kitty Kaletsky. “I went through all these halcyon films and stuff, but actually, the rabbit track, for me, was somewhere as a child at the back of my garden. From the moment I can remember, it was the place where we were allowed to roam, and adventures would happen. It was fun and wild and feral.”
The name was chosen before Kaletsky came on board, but the production company has since been a joint enterprise. Kaletsky — formerly of Number 9 Films, Archery Pictures and Black Bear — often handles the day-to-day operations, notably when Norton is filming.

"The funny thing... I didn't tell anyone." Shout Studios has revealed an official trailer for Magpie, a neo-noir thriller from director Sam Yates, most known for theater in the UK. This initially premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and is set for a theatrical release starting in late October this fall. This looks like it gets quite creepy. When Ben and Anette's daughter Matilda is cast in a film alongside glamorous movie star Alicia, relationships are pushed to the brink. "A twisty, wicked thriller." A couple find their lives turned upside-down when their daughter is cast alongside a controversial major star. Magpie stars Daisy Ridley, Shazad Latif, Matilda Lutz, Pippa Bennett-Warner, Hiba Ahmed, Cherrelle Skeete, and Alistair Petrie. This looks like a dark and nefarious thriller about what happens when jealousy and secrets overwhelm people. Described in reviews as an "engrossing" flick with a "slow-burn buildup.

In a recent feature with Women’s Health, Daisy Ridley revealed that she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease in September of 2023.
Graves’ disease is a disorder of the immune system that causes an overproduction of hormones in the thyroid. Common symptoms include shakiness, sensitivity to heat, weight loss and skin irritation.
After shooting Sam Yates’ 2024 thriller “Magpie,” Ridley began feeling symptoms of increased heart rate, rapid weight loss, exhaustion and trembling hands. “I thought, ‘Well, I’ve just played a really stressful role,’ presumably that’s why I feel poorly,’” Ridley said.
After describing her condition to the endocrinologist, they mentioned the feeling of Graves’ is often described as “tired but weird.” At that moment, Ridley realized how irritable she had become going through the early stages of the disease.
“It was funny, I was like, ‘Oh, I just thought I was annoyed at the world,’” Ridley said. “But turns...

Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley revealed in a new interview with Women’s Health that she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease last September after experiencing concerning symptoms. The 29-year-old British star, best known for portraying Rey in the blockbuster sci-fi franchise, initially dismissed hot flashes, weight loss and fatigue while filming her psychological thriller Magpie.
“I thought I just felt poorly due to the stress of such an intense role,” Ridley told the magazine. However, after seeking medical attention, she received confirmation that she had Graves’ disease – an autoimmune disorder causing an overactive thyroid. The condition primarily impacts women aged 20-40 and if left untreated can result in blood clots, weakening bones and heart issues.
Graves’ disease causes the immune system to produce antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland to overproduce hormones. According to the National Institutes of Health, symptoms may include rapid heartbeat, eye swelling, hand trembling and mood changes.

Daisy Ridley is back on the big screen with one of her finest works to date in Young Woman and the Sea. Directed by Joachim Rønning, the biographical drama about legendary swimmer Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle is the highest testing film of Jerry Bruckheimer’s storied producorial career that includes the likes of Top Gun: Maverick, Beverly Hills Cop and Flashdance. Originally slated for a Disney+ exclusive release, Ridley and co. were rewarded with a limited theatrical run that begins on May 31. Such upgrades don’t come easy given the costs associated with theatrical exhibition, but as Rønning put it, Bruckheimer was “relentless” in his successful pursuit.
The film’s road to theatrical, in a way, parallels the underdog story that Young Woman and the Sea is telling involving Trudy, and Ridley considers this hard-earned achievement to be as rewarding as anything she’s done to date.

One of the breakout hits of SXSW 2024 was “Magpie,” a tense thriller that stars Daisy Ridley as a woman who begins to spiral after her young daughter is cast in a movie, and her husband becomes enamored with the actress playing her onscreen mother.
The neo-noir was a passion project for the actress and producer, who conceived the idea after forming a close bond with a child star playing her own onscreen daughter and began to imagine how a similar relationship could drive a wedge between a family. She took the idea to her husband Tom Bateman, who wrote the script that ultimately became “Magpie.” Hours after the film’s SXSW premiere, Ridley and her collaborators sat down with IndieWire to discuss crafting the film that gave her one of the meatiest roles of her career.
“I was on set for ‘The Marsh King’s Daughter,’ and I had a little girl in it.
