Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
After toiling in the trenches with Nick Box’s three releases from the week of April 13, it’s something of a relief to jump ahead to May 8, 2023 with a discussion of Louis DeStefano’s Amityville Emanuelle.
Presumably influenced by the French book and film series of the same name (minus the extra “m”), Geno McGahee’s screenplay returns to a tried and true Amityville premise: a cursed object, a spectral haunting, and some sexy shenanigans.
Amityville: Emanuelle immediately situates itself within the “franchise”s canon with recreated footage of Ronald DeFeo’s murder spree in April of 1974. This is familiar territory: we’ve seen variations of the shootings in Amityville II, The Amityville Legacy, Amityville: The Awakening and more.

The film is set in 1990 surrounding the hysteria of the war on drugs. Written by Ren Trella and inspired by true events from her life as a teenager, the script was a semi-finalist in the prestigious Academy Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting.

On November 13, 1974, at 112 Ocean Ave. in Amityville, New York, a young man named Ronald DeFeo woke up in the middle of the night, took up a shotgun, and went from room to room in his home, systematically murdering six members of his family. DeFeo was apprehended by the police. At first, DeFeo claimed the murders were mob-related, but he later confessed to committing the crimes himself. He was sentenced to 25 years to life for his crimes. DeFeo died in prison in 2021.
DeFeo's murders became notorious with the publication of Jay Anson's nonfiction book "The Amityville Horror" in 1977. After the killings, the Lutz family moved into 112 Ocean Ave., and they claimed to experience a panoply of paranormal phenomena. Flies mobbed the building, and the entire Lutz family reported hearing eerie voices. George Lutz, the family patriarch, claimed to be possessed by a demonic presence that was driving him to kill his family.

American Horror Stories, a streaming series spin-off from FX’s long-running horror anthology series American Horror Story, began with a seven episode first season in 2021, and an eight episode second season followed in 2022. For the upcoming third season, the episode count has been shortened to just four – and all four episodes of American Horror Stories season 3 are set to drop on the Hulu streaming service on October 26th! With that date just three weeks away, a teaser trailer has arrived online to give a quick preview of the Halloween (or “Huluween”) event. You can watch it in the embed above.
Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, the same duo that’s responsible for American Horror Story, this series is a weekly hourlong anthology that features a different horror story, some of which call back to the original series, in each contained episode. Live or die. The choice is yours. But if you reach ten sequels, shit’s probably going to get weird. This week, the Saw franchise returns with Saw X. Which means people really like to see other people tortured and I’m judging every single one of us. It also means the Saw franchise has done something quite special. Not many horror franchises make it this long. Not even Freddy himself has crossed the tenth movie finish line. Scream. Evil Dead. Child’s Play. Paranormal Activity. The Conjuring. Even when you include the spinoffs, none of them have hit ten films!
But Saw X isn’t the first horror franchise to reach that landmark. So, let’s play a game and take a look at how other franchises have fared in their milestone tenth installments…
Jason X (2001)
Walk into one room and bemoan Jason X and everyone will laugh and agree.

"We seem to be stuck, you and me." Stuck in a pickle? Shudder has unveiled an official trailer for a horror thriller survival movie called Night of the Hunted, the latest film from French horror filmmaker Franck Khalfoun. This is streaming on Shudder in October just in time for Halloween, though it isn't hitting many other festivals this fall. Not to be confused with the other famous French horror film The Night of the Hunted from 1980. This one is about a sniper. In the dead of night, a remote gas station turns into a battleground of wits and wills. Can one woman outsmart a hidden sniper with a secret vendetta? Camille Rowe stars as Alice, who makes a stop and ends up in a horrifying fight for her life. The small cast includes Aleksandar Popovic, J. John Bieler, Isaiah Reyes. This seems legit scary and quite compelling for a stuck-in-one-place survival thriller.

Genre regulars Alexandre Aja and Franck Khalfoun have worked together many times over the years. Khalfoun had acting roles in Aja’s movies High Tension and Piranha 3D, worked in the script department on Aja’s The Hills Have Eyes remake, and was an executive producer on his film Oxygen. Aja wrote and produced Khalfoun’s directorial efforts P2 and Maniac. And now they’ve teamed up again for the thriller Night of the Hunted, which is set to start streaming on both the Shudder and AMC+ services as of October 20th. We’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for Night of the Hunted, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Like several of the previous Aja and Khalfoun projects, Night of the Hunted is a remake. In this case, the source material is the 2015 Spanish film La Noche del Ratón.

We’ve reached the last of the studio Amityville films with writer/director Franck Khalfoun’s Amityville: The Awakening (2017). It’s taken this editorial series a while to reach this milestone because we’re going through the Amityville films chronologically, though anyone familiar with the troubled production history of the film could feasibly argue this should have been covered back among the 2014 films (when the film was originally filmed) or 2016 (when reshoots were done and the film was originally scheduled for release).
In addition to those 2016 reshoots – the results of poor audience scores – the film was derailed due to its ties to the Weinstein/#MeToo movement. It was eventually dumped onto Google Play for free in late 2017.

Lisa Rinna is best known for playing the characters of Billie Reed on Days of Our Lives and Taylor McBride on Melrose Place… or at least she was, until she was featured on eight seasons of the reality series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. That may be what most viewers recognize her from these days. But Rinna recently left that Real Housewives show, and now Deadline reports that she has signed on to appear in an episode of the Hulu horror anthology series American Horror Stories.
The episode Rinna will be in is titled Tapeworm, and most of the filming of that episode was already completed before Deadline confirmed her involvement. That’s the only information that’s available at this time.

The unofficial Amityville Horror movies just keep getting weirder, with recent films including Amityville in Space, Amityville Thanksgiving, and Amityville Christmas Vacation. Essentially, indie filmmakers are having a blast poking fun at the franchise with these wildly unofficial installments, using the name brand recognition to draw attention to their efforts.
Up next? Amityville Backpack!
The horror goes portable in this upcoming tale of a haunted, killer backpack, which has just been funded through Indiegogo. Evan Jacobs (Death Toilet) is directing the film.
The filmmaker previews, “The plot follows a rather hapless dude who buys a backpack at a garage sale. When people around him turn up dead, he comes to believe his new accessory may be to blame. Tracking its history, he discovers it has connections back to a haunted house in a small town called Amityville…”

Ronald DeFeo Jr., the Long Island man serving a life sentence for slaughtering his parents and four siblings in a 1974 crime that would inspire The Amityville Horror book and movie franchise, died March 12 at the Albany Medical Center in New York. He was 69.
His death was announced yesterday by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. A ruling on cause of death is pending an autopsy.
DeFeo had been transferred to the hospital on February 2 from the Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, N.Y., where he had been imprisoned since 1975 after confessing to six counts of second-degree murder.
DeFeo was 23 when, in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 1974, he shot and killed his father Ronald DeFeo Sr., his mother Louise, and younger siblings Dawn, Allison, Mark and John Matthew. The bodies were found in the bedrooms of the family home in the village of Amityville, Long Island.

The five remaining contestants in Group C took to the stage again on episode 8 of season 3 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired Wednesday (March 18) on Fox. Last week saw the first (and last) appearance of the sixth contender from this group: the Bear lost the studio audience vote and was revealed to be politician Sarah Palin.
His one-time competitors are disguised as the Astronaut, Night Angel, Rhino, Swan and T-Rex. We rewatched all of their performances from last week as well as their clues videos. While we were way off base about the Bear (we thought it was YouTube star JoJo Siwa) we are convinced we are on the right track when it comes to revealing the real names of the rest of Group C. Keep reading for “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the true identity of the Swan, who sang the Peggy Lee classic “Fever” in her first appearance...

While Halloween season is officially over, the world of horror (and sci-fi) marches on with this week’s Blu-ray and DVD releases. November 5th is probably one of our quieter days of home media releases in some time, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some killer stuff to get excited for. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark arrives on Tuesday on multiple formats, and for those of you who love Galaxy Quest as much as I do, the sci-fi comedy is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a brand new Steelbook as well.
All three entries in Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy are headed to 4K this week—Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End—and for those of you who were unable to keep up with it on Amazon, the Good Omens series hits both Blu and DVD this Tuesday.

"What if your very own slice of paradise was actually a nightmare?" Blumhouse has launched an official trailer for a horror thriller movie titled just Prey, produced by Hyde Park Entertainment and ImageNation. This jungle island survival movie is the latest from French horror filmmaker Franck Khalfoun. To help rehabilitate a high school senior for behavioral issues, he is placed on a uninhabited island, but soon finds he is not alone. Being discovered could prove deadly. Logan Miller & Kristine Froseth star as two young strangers forced to run and fight for their lives against a mysterious and deadly force lurking deep in the jungle. This also reminds me a bit of J.D. Dillard's Sweetheart, about a deserted island that's haunted by some creepy ass creature. But this still looks like it has some gnarly scares. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Franck Khalfoun's Prey, direct from Blumhouse's YouTube: From Hyde Park Entertainment,...

Bella Thorne, who first rose to prominence as a Disney Channel star, has directed an adult film for Pornhub. “Her and Him” is described as an ethereal “Romeo and Juliet”-themed tale of two lovers wrestling between dominance and submission. The film stars adult actors Small Hands and Abella Danger, and will make its world premiere at Germany’s Oldenburg Film Festival before becoming available on Pornhub Premium.
Here’s the official logline: “‘Her & Him’ depicts an edgy twenty-something guy who stumbles upon a surprise text in his girlfriend’s phone, interrupting their morning routine and spinning everything into an out-of-control sexually charged encounter.”
“The vision behind the story was basically creating these two dynamic characters that could switch off … [between] dominant and submissive,” Thorne says in a promotional video. “My vision originally actually was to make a Christmas horror movie, and instead I made a very beautiful, ethereal, neon type of vision.

In 2014, if someone claimed Annabelle would spawn the ‘Conjurverse’s’ most successful spinoff sequels, I’d’ve gone blue in the face from laughter. Not even Nostradamus could prophesize the leap in quality from Annabelle to Annabelle: Creation, and now Annabelle to Annabelle Comes Home.
Frequent ‘Conjurverse’ screenwriter Gary Dauberman helms this third continuation in the Warrens’ fight against dolly-dearest damnation, which is an absolute monster mashin’ blast. It’s like walking through a high-concept Halloween Horror Nights maze at Universal, and I mean that in the best funhouse way. Dauberman’s screenplay answers that oft-pondered Cabin In The Woods question, as characters unwittingly choose their collective fate, of “What happens if *all* the monsters get loose?” Annabelle isn’t alone, and as depicted, there ain’t no party like an Annabelle party because an Annabelle party don’t stop (the screams).

In an exclusive exit interview with Deadline, he reflects on his legacy, and looks ahead to the future of the guild and the industry. His last day in office will be June 22, although he’ll continue to serve on the guild’s executive board.
“I’m very proud of the work that has been done over the last 13 years,” he said. “We really took a union on the brink of a very difficult time, and we have turned it into one of the strongest (Iatse) locals in the bargaining unit, and the legacy of craft and safety and technology and dedication to trade unionism is something that I will never, ever forget, and I’ll be very proud of it for all my days to come.

The Amityville franchise has brought us a whopping 18 installments to date. Inspired by the critical and financial success of 1979’s The Amityville Horror (which still stands as one of the most commercially successful independent movies ever produced), we’ve been seeing various, remakes and reboots for decades now, but none of them have been able to reach the same level as the original.
The most recent effort was the dreadful Amityville: The Awakening – you can read our review here – and though it was a pretty dull and uninspired watch, the series will soldier on next year with The Amityville Murders. Like its predecessor, it doesn’t look like it’ll be able to return this once bankable franchise to its former glory, but fans of the series will no doubt be keen to check it out and to drum up some excitement, we’ve now got a new poster to feast on.

"What've we done!?" "We awakened them." Skyline has released a new official trailer for the horror prequel The Amityville Murders, written and directed by filmmaker Daniel Ferrands. This is yet another horror movie in the never-ending Amityville series, and it looks just as forgettable as most of the other films. Did Amityville: The Awakening ever get released? It was shelved for years and never even saw the light of day. Anyway. This one takes us back to the beginning. On the night of November 13th, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. took his rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial, DeFeo claimed "voices" in the house told him to kill. This is their story. Starring John Robinson, Chelsea Ricketts, Diane Franklin, Paul Ben-Victor, Lainie Kazan, and Burt Young. This film looks about as bland and redundant as expected. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Daniel Farrands' The Amityville Murders,...

Exclusive: Universal/Miramax/Blumhouse’s David Gordon Green-directed reboot-sequel Halloween is scaring up an estimated $14.7M bow at the international box office this weekend. This is in line with Uni estimates heading into the launch where Jamie Lee Curtis’ badass strode into 23 markets. Mexico, the UK and Russia are the only majors this frame (next weekend is a bigger push in key hubs). Coupled with domestic, the worldwide bow is expected to hit $95M — these figures may of course shift when we get the full rundown tomorrow and the actuals on Monday.
The movie will be the No. 1 title domestically and worldwide for the frame. Overseas, it should come in at No. 3 behind Venom and A Star Is Born. Starts in Mexico, the UK, Indonesia, Finland, Slovakia, Ecuador, Panama, Honduras and Nicaragua are all No. 1s. The like-for-like opening of $14.7M shoots higher than Split (+11%), The Conjuring (+50%), Lights Out...
