Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today, Conor and I get blunt. Emily Blunt! As Jungle Cruise opens in theaters and on Disney+, our Blunt B-Sides include: The Adjustment Bureau, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Arthur Newman, and Wild Mountain Thyme. Additionally, we discuss the star’s first two films which broke her through and her eventual rise to leading lady status a few years later.
There’s heavy chatter on what exactly makes Blunt so dynamic, a detour into how Gulliver’s Travels prevented her from playing Black Widow for Marvel, and how two of these B-sides recall the Katharine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy films from Hollywood past.
Other topics include Matt Damon’s criticisms of Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Ultimatum script, the...

Three of the announced series in development are anthology-oriented, while nearly all feature some level of genre element. This includes the B-movie homage “Shock Theatre” as well as “Wicked West,” Blumhouse’s non-fiction take on “the most frightening and disturbing tales from the Wild West.”
There are also two high-concept premises mentioned: “Liking What You See” depicts a world where people voluntarily choose to surrender their ability to appreciate beauty, while “The Age of Miracles” is a drama about what happens to one woman’s family after the world learns that the earth’s rotation is slowing down.

Despite being two of the most gifted, sought-after actors in world cinema, it’s something of a surprise to see Colin Firth and Emily Blunt’s Arthur and Mike gain such a low-scale release, with little promotion behind director Dante Ariola’s star-studded, debut endeavour. However the further into this underwhelming picture you get the more apparent it becomes as to why this film has slipped under the radar somewhat, as despite those attached – Arthur and Mike is frustratingly, and overtly, unsubtle.
Firth plays Wallace Avery, a talented golfer who becomes disillusioned with life, and so one day decides to pack up, obtain a brand new identity (‘Arthur Newman’) and leave behind a wife and teenage son, without even the courtesy of a note. While he’s filed under the missing person register, he is in fact embarking on a road trip, seeking pastures new – before he stumbles across the...

The trailer for Arthur And Mike has been released.
Colin Firth stars in the romantic drama as a once-talented golfer who fakes his own death out of desperation to escape his current life.
After acquiring a new passport and a fake identity, he begins a new life in Indiana and encounters the similarly-troubled Charlotte (Emily Blunt), a woman travelling under her twin sister's identity.
The pair embark on an escapist road trip together, breaking into empty homes and role-playing new identities, but are ultimately forced to confront their own pasts.
The film is director Dante Ariola's debut feature, and is written by Becky Johnston. It was released in the Us last year under the title Arthur Newman.
Arthur And Mike is released in the UK on June 27.

"Now You See Me"
What's It About? In "Now You See Me," from director Louis Leterrier's ("The Incredible Hulk"), a team of the world's best illusionists -- dubbed The Four Horsemen -- are known for robbing banks during their performances and giving away the money. However, the magicians are being tracked by an FBI agent and an Interpol detective. Why We're In: One of the most unique stories of the summer (we've had enough superhero & action flicks for a while), "Now You See Me" was a refreshing find. The film also had a great cast, including the very underrated Mark Ruffalo, Jessie Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Melanie Laurent. "Now You See Me" was one of Moviefone's Best Movies of 2013 (So Far).

A rundown of the latest Blu-Ray New Releases isn’t something we do here very often, but once in a while you get a very strange week (or two) in the home market, especially when you consider it coinciding with other events in the world.
The early part of September this year isn’t just back-to-school, or the time to prepare for the new fall season of TV, it’s apparently the time when we’re hoping you’re in the market to own some new Blu-Rays.
I suppose back-to-school, as a time of year, has some sell to it already – something to stuff in dorm boxes, and/or the kids are finally busy again, I have a minute to watch something – but, there’s a lot showing up this year, and the battle for your attention is going to be a big one. "Arthur Newman" made headlines when it debuted last spring, but it wasn't for the film's onscreen coupling of Oscar-winner Colin Firth and rising star Emily Blunt. The media attention instead centered on an innovative marketing campaign driven by an odd couple pairing of a Hollywood studio and BitTorrent. The film flopped, racking up roughly $200,000 in limited box-office release, but BitTorrent is claiming that its efforts in raising awareness of "Arthur Newman" were a rousing success. Cinedigm, the indie studio behind the film partnered with the open-source technology maker to offer up...

Director Rob Marshall is in the midst of assembling one of the best ensemble casts we've seen in a long time for the upcoming adaptation of the fairy tale musical Into The Woods. In late April we learned that the director would be using the project to reteam with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides star Johnny Depp as well as Meryl Streep, but in the past few weeks we've also learned that Tony Award -winning British actor James Corden and both Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhall are attached to the project. But the casting process is likely far from over, and today the pic is wrangling to get yet another talented name to sign on the dotted line. Emily Blunt, who most recently appeared alongside Colin Firth in the dramedy Arthur Newman, is now in final talks to join the cast of Into The Woods, according to Variety.

When he hasn’t been writing directing or producing some of the more notorious entries in the horror/torture porn catalogue (like “Cabin Fever,” “Hostel,” and the two “Last Exorcisms”) Eli Roth has worked on his parallel career as screen star -- perhaps most notably as the Bear Jew, the baseball bat-wielding, Nazi-dispatching, one-man-Jewish-revenge-fantasy of Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds.” So imagine our surprise to find Roth playing the shirt-tucked-into-mom-jeans-wearing Jewish stereotype of “Aftershock,” which opens Friday (May 10). Produced by Roth, Brian Oliver (“Arthur Newman”) and Miguel Asensio, and directed by Chile’s Nicolas Lopez, the shocker is set in Santiago, where three guys on the make run into what are essentially three supermodels (Lorenza Izzo, Natasha Yarovenko, Andrea Osvart), and then there’s an earthquake. But it’s a bit odd, this very deliberate effort to emphasize the male characters' Jewishness -- something Roth’s...

Updated: It's true! Colin Firth will join Emma Stone to lead Woody Allen's "new, untitled comedy," according to a press release. The project will film in the south of France, making it Allen's second film in France, and his eighth in Europe.
Bon voyage, Colin!

Earlier: Woody Allen is an interesting fellow. While most filmmakers come up with a grand idea and then find stars to play the parts, Allen seems to often do the opposite: He finds people and places that inspire him and then crafts the film around their strengths. Last week, we heard that Emma Stone was in talks to work with the bespectacled director, and now a male lead seems poised to join her, according to Deadline.
Let's all welcome Colin Firth to the Woody Club, shall we?

Looking to give her coif an upgrade, Emily Blunt showed up at a beauty shop in West Hollywood yesterday afternoon (April 29).

Emily stars along with Colin Firth in the new indie flick “Arthur Newman,” and she told press that the quirky project was a refreshing change of pace for her.
"The script, in general terms, was just completely refreshing in how original it was — and it was pretty uncompromising, actually. I liked the idea of the more we mask ourselves maybe the freer we are able to be within ourselves. I think everyone at some point has wanted to escape or run away, or take on a different identity. I don’t really particularly feel these characters are necessarily crazy.

Oscar-winner Colin Firth just can't get away from fans of Mr. Darcy. It seems like we've been waiting forever for "Bridget Jones's Baby," the third movie in the beloved romcom series, but the "Arthur Newman" star says it's not happening anytime soon. The co-chairman of Working Title Films, Tim Bevan, has insisted that the film is still in development; in an official statement last February to Deadline, he said, "Reports that Hugh Grant has exited 'Bridget Jones's Baby' are untrue. We are still working on the script hence the delay to the start of production, but the film is going ahead as planned." He also told the BBC, "'Bridget Jones's Baby' is like herding cats but they're beginning to fall into line." Firth doesn't seem to be falling into line, though. He told the Chicago Sun-Times that "it might be a bit of a long wait.

Colin Firth and Emily Blunt team up for the “gently comic screen romance” Arthur Newman, in theaters now. Recently, I sat down with both Colin Firth and Emily Blunt in a roundtable discussion about the film. Check it out below.
Wallace Avery (Colin Firth) is tired of his existence. Divorced, disconnected from his young son, dissatisfied with his love life, depressed and in the doldrums of middle age, he decides to make a radical change by walking away from his old life. He buys a new identity and hits the road as Arthur Newman to begin life anew, bound for Terre Haute, Indiana, where he dreams of reinventing himself as a golf pro at a tiny country club.
But his road trip is derailed by the entrance of Michaela “Mike” Fitzgerald (Emily Blunt), whom Arthur discovers passed out poolside at a seedy roadside motel. Mike sees through Arthur’s identity scam,...

As a director, Matthew Vaughn hasn.t really given us any great movies so much as he.s created some pretty great moments within okay movies. Layer Cake is the most rewatchable of his four films, and mostly for the acting. The actors are generally what keep his films alive, and there.s no denying that truly great performers keep working with him. Now that casting has begun on The Secret Service, Vaughn.s upcoming adaptation of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbon.s comic series, the first example of his killer casting abilities has shown itself. Latino Review reports Colin Firth will lend his Oscar winning thespianism to The Secret Service in one of the film.s lead roles. Firth, who is currently starring in the BitTorrent-sponsored dramedy Arthur Newman, is usually the quintessential Brit in the films he stars in . genially stoic and romantic without bullshit attached . so this...

Colin Firth is in talks to play the male lead in Woody Allen's untitled next project, Deadline reports. The news comes less than a week after the news that Emma Stone has signed on to play the female lead. Plot details are still unavailable, but the outlet reports that the film will be shot in the South of France. Allen's latest, Blue Jasmine , stars Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Stuhlbarg and is set to hit theaters in New York and Los Angeles on July 26. As an actor, Colin Firth has proved remarkably resilient over his thirty-year career. After breaking through in 1984's "Another Country," a series of strong performances followed that never quite saw him become a huge star. But suddenly, 1995's TV version of "Pride & Prejudice" made him a heartthrob, and led to roles in Oscar-winners "The English Patient" and "Shakespeare In Love." Just as the roles started to dry up again, he played another seminal romantic lead in "Bridget Jones' Diary." And then, as his career seemed to creep into self-parody with the likes of "Mamma Mia" and "St. Trinian's," he got back-to-back Oscar nominations for "A Single Man" and "The King's Speech," winning for the latter. And it looks like another reinvention for Mr. Firth might be on the way. Aside from "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," his immediate post-Oscar roles, in "Gambit" and "Arthur Newman," have been disappointing, but he's...

Matthew Vaughn's Secret Service adaptation of the Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons comic book may star Colin Firth. Sources say that the Oscar-winning actor of The King's Speech, is in talks to star in the film scripted by Vaughn, alongside Jane Goldman. Vaughn also produces and finances by his Marv films, as he did with the excellent Kick-Ass, a film who's sequel opens on August 16th. Distributed by 20th Century Dox with a release date of November 14th, 2014, Secret Service follows a ruffian from a bad neighborhood in London who's drafted into a British spy school; the kind that develops suave, 007-type spies. Firth would play the uncle. Firth's currently in Cinedigm's Arthur Newman comedy alongside Emily Blunt, Anne Heche and Sterlin Beaumon. The Dante Areola film opened in limited areas with little response from viewers. Prior to that, he was in the less-than-well-received Gambit with Cameron Diaz, Stanley Tucci and Alan Rickman.

Colin Firth is doing his first comic book movie. The actor, who won an Oscar for his performance in 2010’s The King Speech, is in talks to star in The Secret Service, Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of a comic he co-created with Mark Millar and artist Dave Gibbons. Vaughn co-wrote the screenplay with frequent collaborator Jane Goldman and is directing, producing and financing via his Marv Films banner, in the same fashion as he adapted Millar’s comic Kick-Ass. In Arthur Newman, a film about emotional displacement and the universal desire to change our lives, you'll understand why Wallace Avery (Colin Firth) is eager to ditch his and fake a new identity. Fired from a dead-end job, with a divorced-off teenage son he can't relate to, Avery stages an oceanside drowning and takes off in a sporty convertible. Firth's persona is of a nice guy, even a worrier, and his Wallace is set on repairing the mistake he made back when he was a once-promising professional golfer. Will he have the chutzpah to pass himself off as Arthur Newman, golf coach? Some he finds in Michaela (Emily Blunt), a cute but drugged-out klepto he rescues roadside. Traveling from Florida to Terre Haute, Indiana, with its promise of lush putting greens, their car is often th...

Chicago – In what could be subtitled, “The Challenge of American Accents,” the new release “Arthur Newman” has a laugh-inducing U.S. inflection face-off between Brits Colin Firth and Emily Blunt. Amid that obstacle, there is a lame road picture that emotionally is false, and makes no sense.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
The film wants to create a mystery, but doesn’t want to solve it. The name “Arthur Newman” has been purchased by a man for reasons that really don’t become clear. Arthur has committed a crime against his ex-wife and family, but that crime is not clear. And when he does hit the road with his new name, he meets a strung out fellow traveler who may be a hooker, but resolves herself rather cleanly and becomes a spunky companion. All the so-called emotional connections between the two are based on a high concept adventure, and features little chemistry between them.

Following the flurry of news arriving out of last week's Cannes lineup announcement, this week felt a little like the calm after the storm, but that didn't stop it from still producing some extremely noteworthy news of its own. Our annual Summer Movie Preview released its first (and four subsequent) installments this week, detailing the 50 Indies that have us most excited for the predominantly Hollywood driven time frame, while Kickstarter once again made headlines with two noteworthy projects. Meanwhile we spoke with Colin Firth about previous projects as well as the just-released "Arthur Newman," two of television's most popular series had episodes ranking amongst the best of the series, and we got to see everyone's favorite madman Michael Shannon channel his inner sorority girl. Take a look at all of these stories and more below as we take a look at the ten most viewed news, interviews, and features from...

"If you don't have a life, get someone else's," is the tagline on "Arthur Newman," a black comedy about identity from first-time feature director Dante Ariola. It stars a couple of people with lots of history inhabiting other people's lives: Oscar-winner Colin Firth as the title character, a middle-aged man who fakes his own death so that he can give himself a different name and a different life, and "Looper" star Emily Blunt as a fragile young woman with her own secrets. The film premiered at last September's Toronto International Film Festival,...

Comedy thriller Murder Mystery is the follow-up to director John Madden’s international hit The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with Charlize Theron coming aboard to star. The latest additions to the comedy whodunit are Colin Firth and Emily Blunt, who star in Dante Ariola’s rom-com Arthur Newman, opening today as well as comedy champ Adam Sandler. Penned by James Vanderbilt (The Amazing Spider-Man) the film will shoot for 25 days in Western Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region. The Agatha Christie-esque caper follows an American couple in Europe who witness a murder, only to find themselves accused of murder, and are drawn into a web of international intrigue....

Want to know what makes Emily Blunt cringe? "Normally, the character is summed up in the first line," the actress tells The Hollywood Reporter of the many scripts that float her way. "'She's a tough, sassy, English rose,' and you're like, 'Oh cringe. That's all you need to know.' I normally will close the script after I read that." But with Arthur Newman, Becky Johnston's identity-swapping dramedy, Blunt found herself thumbing through the script multiple times before grasping the background on her character, Mike (short for McKayla). In the film, Colin Firth plays a lost,

So, there's two ways to look at this story: as a reteaming between Colin Firth and Emily Blunt, who star in "Arthur Newman," opening today, or as the rare non-Happy Madison outing by Adam Sandler. We'll let you decide which one you want to go with, but the bottom line is this is a pretty good, and unexpected cast for this upcoming comedy. First announced last summer, the aforementioned trio will be joining Charlize Theron in "Murder Mystery," which is pretty much exactly what the title implies. Penned by "Zodiac" and "The Amazing Spider-Man" writer James Vanderbilt, the Agatha Christie-esque story follows an American couple on honeymoon in Europe who have to go on the run after witnessing and being accused of murder, and are drawn into a web of international intrigue. Yes, it's a comedy, but it will also apparently have dashes of suspense and romance as well.

A week ahead of Iron Man 3's debut*and the launch of the Summer movie season*two comparatively modest movies are opening nationwide this weekend. On the strength of its star power and energetic marketing, Pain and Gain should wind up close to $20 million, while The Big Wedding is poised for about half as much. Overall, this weekend will likely be a quiet one as audiences brace for the higher profile fare coming up.Opening at 3,277 locations, Pain and Gain has a legitimate chance at claiming the top spot this weekend ahead of holdover Oblivion. The bodybuilder thriller*based on a very bizarre true story*is director Michael Bay's first non-Transformers movie since 2005's The Island, and it appears to be a return to the mix of gritty humor and violence that characterized his debut feature Bad Boys. Add in The Rock and Mark Wahlberg, who both...

There are many of us, at one point or another, who wish they could go and start a completely new life with a brand new identity. The idea of wiping their slate clean and starting new has always appealed to us, but most of us have never acted on it. In “Arthur Newman,” our lead character does just that as he fakes his own death in order to live an interesting, new life. What he doesn’t realize is that the addition of an unexpected companion will alter the way he looks back at his old life and handles his new one. One of the strongest parts of the film is [ Read More ]

Jay Leno had double the fun on The Tonight Show in La yesterday when both Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise stopped by. Emily was there to chat about her film with Colin Firth, Arthur Newman, which hits theaters in limited release tomorrow, while Tom talked up Oblivion. They'll be back together on the promotional trail next year, since they have All You Need Is Kill coming out in 2014. Until then, Emily had only good things to say about Tom, whom she called "instantly popular," and stuck around to show her support during his interview with Jay. Tom rattled off some of his most famous movie lines from Risky Business and others and also shared the story of getting his first motorcycle. Watch a clip of the fun when you click into the gallery! Colin Firth and Emily Blunt are two of the finest British actors to grace the big screen. So what happens when they come together to play two Americans taking on fake identities in "Arthur Newman"? A whole lot of random craziness, including carrying on sexual escapades in many a stranger's home ... not exactly the type of behavior you'd expect from an Academy Award winner or newlywed.
When NextMovie sat down with the pair, things got almost as fun as their antics in the film, which hits theaters this weekend. Firth opened up about where's the wildest place a couple could potentially get their groove on (while recording it, too) and Blunt squashed any rumors on her supposed love affair with Anne Hathaway.

What if we are all Arthur Newman? This is the question that director Dante Ariola and screenwriter Becky Johnston raise in "Arthur Newman," their tepid, imaginatively uninvolved drama about two strangers that fall in love while trying to escape their banal past lives. Ariola and Johnston’s film follows a rag-tag couple, played by Colin Firth and Emily Blunt, who bond when they discover that they both want to run away from their respective families and create new lives for themselves. But because "Arthur Newman" is a drab, psychologically flat portrait of misfit lovers in the process of self-fashioning new identities, we never really learn who its two main characters aspire to be or in what new direction they want to take their lives. All we know is that Arthur and his new girlfriend like to play hooky from their day-to-day existence, and that experience inexplicably changes everything. Firth stars as Newman,...
