"Sometimes when you trust your impulses, incredible things can happen." Rlje Films has released an official trailer for a horror thriller titled Ride, which is indeed a horror movie about ride-sharing apps (like Uber and Lyft). I knew they'd make one of these films one day, and here it is, and it looks as bad as I thought it would. Just so cheesy and unnecessary and an exaggeration of the horror of car services, because why not, let's scare everyone and make them even more paranoid. Ride is described as a "cautionary tale aimed at a technology-obsessed society." Ugh, of course it is. When James, an Uber driver, and his passenger, Jessica, pick up the charismatic but manipulative Bruno, a normal night out in La becomes a psychological war for survival. Starring Jessie T. Usher, Bella Thorne, and Will Brill. This film looks so excruciatingly bad. Here's the first official...

Fire can signify destruction, but it can also mark a rebirth. On Wednesday night at London’s Brixton Academy, flames gave rise to a new beginning for Twenty One Pilots. Branded as “A Complete Diversion,” the one-off show opened with a blaze. As the lights dimmed, drummer Josh Dun emerged from the darkness, clad in a black face mask and hoodie, holding a fiery torch aloft before climbing behind his kit. With a thump of the kick drum singer Tyler Joseph, also in a black mask, joined him, heralded by...

Exclusive: Norman Reedus will be taking the stage at Comic-Con today with his compatriots from The Walking Dead, but the actor will also be taking it to the big screen with STXfilms in the not so distant future.
Reedus and the Adam Fogelson-run division of Stx Entertainment have inked a deal to develop a genre feature for the Ride host to both star in and produce, I’ve learned.
Much like the agreements that STXfilms put together with Jason Statham and Guardians of the Galaxy’s David Bautista earlier this year and late last year respectively, the project will be specifically tailored to play to Reedus’ established and not inconsiderable audience of Twd viewers and beyond.
“Norman has steadily built up a devoted fan following across movies and television with memorable performances,” STXfilms chairman Fogelson told me of the project. “Stx is thrilled to collaborate with Norman on this...

The team behind Netflix and ITV hit “Marcella” have scooped the TV rights to “The Doll Factory,” an eagerly anticipated thriller set in 1850s London. Buccaneer Media will adapt Elizabeth Macneal’s novel for TV, with the drama producer’s founder, Tony Wood, and development executive Anna Burns exec producing.
The book is hot property, with numerous bidders for the publishing rights. Pan Macmillan/Picador ultimately won an auction, beating more than a dozen rivals. Simon & Schuster/Emily Bestler Books has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights in a two-book deal with Macneal. Both will issue “The Doll Factory” in 2019.
The story follows Iris, an aspiring artist who works in a doll-making shop, and Silas, a reclusive collector. They meet by chance in London’s Hyde Park during the construction of The Great Exhibition of 1851, which is the start of Silas’ increasingly dark obsession with Iris.

Broadcast television is divided between conformity and progression. Stations like CBS and NBC, for instance, largely refuse to move from comfortable original programming, without relevance or (for the most part) originality, while ABC and Fox go out of their way to challenge themselves by developing a social conscious. Shots Fired, Fox’s latest, most timely drama, is not comfortable TV. Instead, it’s urgent, thoughtful, political, poignant, intelligent and filled with relevancy and bleeding sincerity. Real comedy still happens on late night, we can prove it. If you like Conan comedy gold, Fallon friendliness, cutesy Corden, list-making Letterman, kneedy Kimmel, and all the rest, I hope you’ll enjoy this column too.
Last night on late night, Martin Short and Cher horsed around with Dave, Anna Wintour put Seth Meyers to work, Conan talked with Nick Swardson and Helen Hunt, Dana Carvey showed up on The Late Late Show, and Kimmel got the Adam Levine treatment.
Late Show with David Letterman
Late Show continues its streak of amazing shows as Dave officially puts in his “two week notice”. Martin Short, one of Letterman’s best and most frequent quests, tells amazing stories. This one, about having to follow Tony Bennett as a young “boy singer” in 1974, is absolutely hilarious.

For me one of the real discoveries of the 2015 movie year to date is the heartfelt independent Ride written and directed by Helen Hunt. She also stars as an overprotective mother (with reasons slowly revealed from her past) who follows her son (Brenton Thwaites) from New York City to the beaches of Southern California (where his father lives) when he secretly drops out of school and decides to try his hand at surfing. After stalking him in a hired limo, they finally…...

Furious 7‘s month-long reign at the box office came to an end this weekend at the hands of another franchise entry, as Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron entered the Us release market with a vengeance, earning $187.6 million to rise to the top of the box office. The total, in addition to displacing the aforementioned James Wan film as the biggest opening weekend gross of 2015, already puts the newest entry in the McU in the top three highest grossing films of the year, ahead of the total gross of Fifty Shades of Grey, and just $6 million behind that of Cinderella.
The box office total of the first place winner caused a noticeable drop in the rest of the charts, as Age of Adaline finished in a distant second with $6.3 million. Furious 7 rounded out the top three with a $6.1 million gross, while Dreamworks’ Home completed its sixth straight...

Helen Hunt join Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” Friday and started the Cinco de Mayo celebration early with a game of beer pong and tequila shots. Fallon explained that first to sink two balls in their opponent’s cup was the winner. “There’s a twist,” he said. “This was Helen’s idea, by the way. The loser does a shot of tequila.” The actress, stopping by to promote her new film “Ride,” and Fallon took their places on opposite sides of the ping pong table and began the game. Fallon started off strong, sinking his first shot with ease.

Fifty-one and totally fabulous! Helen Hunt is proving that she just gets better with age, and in her new movie, Ride, the actress shows off the way she's stayed so fit and toned over the years: surfing. Chatting with HuffPost Live April 30, Ride's writer, director, and star explained that she's surfed for 10 years, and even rode the waves while "100 months" pregnant in 2004. "I always wanted to," said Hunt, who grew up in Los Angeles and splits her time between L.A. and New York. [...]...

Ride of Passage: Hunt’s Belated Sophomore Effort Crests Waves of Cliché
Perhaps the most surprising element of note in Helen Hunt’s Ride is the fact that this is her sophomore directorial effort following the 2007 debut Then She Found Me. While the previous film was adapted from a celebrated novel by Elinor Lipman, Hunt concocts her own original scenario here, serving as director, screenwriter, star, and producer. Painfully pedestrian and awkwardly rendered, Hunt’s film devolves into a nagging, ho-hum situational dramedy that spends entirely too much time focused on its anal-retentive protagonist’s break from an elitist shell of pretension rather than the central relationship upon which the narrative’s flaky emotional core is hinged.
Jackie (Hunt), a single, overly determined mother that works as an editor at The New Yorker, is about to see her 18 year old son Angelo (Brenton Thwaites) off to college. But upon going...

As an actress, Helen Hunt has thrived in the entertainment industry for over four decades. She’s won an Oscar, Golden Globe Awards and Primetime Emmys. She has succeeded on a large scale as both a film and a television actress, which is no small feat considering that, until recently, film and television actors have been largely kept in distinct and relatively immutable categories. Hunt has been directing for years, too, from episodes of Mad About You to her first feature film in 2007, Then She Found Me. There's a bit too much going on in Helen Hunt's Ride, perhaps because Hunt is doing a bit too much in it: In addition to directing, Hunt also wrote and stars, and unless you're Orson Welles — even sometimes when you are Orson Welles — it's a good idea to have someone around to tell you which lines don't work or which scenes don't quite fit. But there's a wry sweetness to this picture, about an overbearing New York editor and single mom, Hunt's Jackie, who follows her college-age son (Brenton Thwaites, Prince Phillip from Maleficent) to Los Angeles, where he aspires to become a surf bum and writer, probably in just about that order. As you can guess, Jackie has to learn what to hang onto and when to let go, and there's lots of let...

At a later point in Helen Hunt‘s “Ride,” when her hard-charging New Yorker is getting surf lessons from Californian Luke Wilson, Wilson pauses to explain the mechanics of waves for the benefit of the novice surfer: The crests and breaks you see on the top are one thing, but what truly shapes the wave is the changes in the ocean floor and seabed, far below the shimmering surface and hidden in the darkness. It’s good surfing advice; it’s also not a bad metaphor for Hunt’s film, where she’s writer, director and lead actor, telling a story whose early broad brightness.

Ride, which Helen Hunt wrote, directed, produced and stars in, begins beautifully. A woman (Hunt) sits against a door in a hallway at night, rising hastily and tiptoeing out of sight when her half-asleep toddler son emerges to go to the bathroom. Once he returns to bed, she resumes her position. Following a dissolve, a young man of about 18 (Brenton Thwaites) comes out from behind the same door — it’s the boy all grown up — and pleads angrily with his mother (still Hunt, now with a bob cut) as she types on her Macbook. He’s writing a

Since Helen Hunt hasn't been super busy in front of the camera, the star of The Sessions, Pay It Forward and As Good As It Gets has decided to get back behind the camera for a new comedy called Ride. The actress also stars in the film she wrote about a woman who follows her college dropout son (Brenton Thwaites of The Giver and The Signal) to Los Angeles as he pursues a life of surfing. Of course, this ends up being a life-changing experience for her as well. It seems like it's trying too hard to be a typical indie story self-discovery, but kudos to Hunt for taking the initiative to write and direct a film for herself to star. Yeah, I didn't know Helen Hunt had written and directed a new movie either, and a surf comedy no less, but indeed she has. It's a sophomore feature effort, though she has helmed a handful of television episodes too, and the first trailer has arrived for "Ride" promising a movie so breezy it might just float away. Hunt stars in the movie along with Brenton Thwaites, Luke Wilson, and that cop from "Dexter," in a story about a stuck up New York woman who has to grapple with her son's shocking decision to drop out of college and surf. She doesn't understand the allure until she hits the water herself, meets a hunky guy, and learns to let her son fly from the nest. Sure, the premise is a bit wonky, but it seems to have a decent amount of heart at the core. "Ride" arrives on May 1st. Watch below.

For how many years has Hollywood endured the Ya novel onslaught? Five? Ten? When was Twilight? It’s strange to think of The Giver as merely the latest in a string of adapted young adult fiction given that its source material, Lois Lowry’s 1993 bestseller, precedes the publication dates of Divergent, City of Bones, and the Twilight saga. Like most of its cinematic contemporaries, The Giver squeezes its story into an angsty, dull, and poorly acted template, sapping any chance of inspiration out of its low-key science fiction concept.
Having not read Lowry’s novel, I can only presume she uses her social structure — a utopian future in which emotions are outlawed — to latch “forbidden” teen angst and romance onto the awkward feelings puberty brings with it. On the verge of graduation, three teenagers join the adult ranks of The Community, envisioned here as a Levittown straight out of Starship Troopers,...
