CNN, Playtone, and Herzog & Company are co-producing a provocative, sweeping 10-part documentary series that will explore perhaps the most transformative decade of the modern era. The non-scripted series will be executive produced by multiple Emmy® Award-winning producers Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman (HBO’s John Adams and The Pacific), and Emmy® Award-winning producer Mark Herzog (History’s Gettysburg) of Herzog & Company (Hco), as a CNN original series for CNN/U.S., it was announced today. “From protests to war, to human rights, the Beatles, innovative technologies, and politics, the 1960s were an extraordinary era of consequential cultural and global change,” said Jeff Zucker, president of CNN Worldwide. “We are so pleased to partner with Tom, Gary, and Hco to bring this very special series to our audience. Projects like this are emblematic of exactly the type of programming that we need more of, signifying a new direction and expanded sensibility at CNN.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, composer Giorgio Moroder was often accused of trying to replace the orchestral movie soundtrack with high-energy, synthesizer-heavy disco pop laid on with a trowel in movies like Thank God It’s Friday (1978), Flashdance (1983), Scarface (1983), and Top Gun (1986). I remember a magazine story on Moroder which quoted one of his many critics as saying, “The day the music died, Giorgio Moroder was brought in for questioning.”
I think some people had the same opinion about movies and Tony Scott. Full disclosure: I’m one of them. But it would be greatly unfair to Scott, who apparently committed suicide Sunday after being diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer, not to admit that, for good or for ill, his 1980s feature work had an enormous impact on commercial filmmaking.

Updated: Tributes to Tony Scott from the Hollywood community have been pouring in following the director-producer’s tragic death. They include remembrances by the stars of the TV series he produced: The Good Wife‘s Julianna Margulies and Numbers‘ David Krumholtz. Numbers marked the first TV series for Ridley and Tony Scott’s Scott Free Prods. It was followed by CBS’ acclaimed legal drama The Good Wife, with the duo also behind The Pillars Of The Earth limited series and its sequel, World Without End, History’s Gettysburg special and the upcoming A&E miniseries Coma, which debuts in two weeks, on Labor Day. (There are no plans to shift the premiere dare in light of Tony Scott’s passing.) Los Angeles -- No one ever mistook Tony Scott for a great dramatist. He was a director critics loved to hate for his slick barrage of images at the expense of story. The filmmaker did not dazzle the imagination with visions of lost or alien worlds, like brother Ridley Scott.
Tony Scott was as populist as they come in Hollywood, a man of action films, pure and simple. From Tom Cruise as a daring fly boy in 1986's "Top Gun" to Denzel Washington mutinying against an unstable captain in 1995's "Crimson Tide" or trying to slow a runaway train in 2010's "Unstoppable," director Scott mastered sky, sea and earth in the name of movie adrenaline.

Los Angeles — Tony Scott, director of such Hollywood hits as "Top Gun," "Days of Thunder" and "Beverly Hills Cop II," died Sunday after jumping from a Los Angeles County bridge, authorities said.
The 68-year-old Scott's death was being investigated as a suicide, Los Angeles County Coroner's Lt. Joe Bale said.
"I can confirm that Tony Scott has passed away. The family asks that their privacy is respected at this time," Scott's spokesman, Simon Halls, said in a statement.
Several people called 911 around 12:35 p.m. to report that someone had jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge spanning San Pedro and Terminal Island in Los Angeles Harbor, according to Los Angeles police Lt. Tim Nordquist.
A dive team with Los Angeles Port Police pulled the body from the murky water several hours later, Nordquist said. Scott's body was taken to a dock in Wilmington and turned over to the county coroner's office.

DVD Review by Gary Young
The battle of Gettysburg was a pivotal moment in the history of the American Civil War - and the History Channel has pulled out all the stops to bring the struggle back to life.
Created to mark the 150th anniversary of the start of the war, this drama documentary is executive produced by Tony and Ridley Scott and has the trademark cinematic sweep for which both filmmakers have become famous.
Combining real actors and CGI, the battle scenes offer an exciting and effective overview of the 1863 battlefield as the soldiers of North and South bloodily snatched the initiative from each other over several gruelling days of warfare.
Filmed in the rugged and unspoilt terrain of Western Cape, South Africa, the action feels horribly authentic, with battle scenes that occasionally bring Saving Private Ryan to mind. Featuring a large...

Giorgio Moroder Presents: Metropolis
Since its release in 1927, Fritz Lang's Metropolis has not only influenced any film-maker who wanted to create a futuristic city, it's also had a strong link with music. Indeed, plenty of performers with a strong eye for visuals – from Kraftwerk and Queen to Madonna and Janelle Monáe – have plundered the film's still-impressive imagery for their videos and artwork.
Perhaps the oddest and least cherished of these Metropolis and music crossovers is this 1984 version, overseen by Giorgio Moroder. Tinting it with colour, adding subtitles and sound effects, music and songs, Moroder made the film seem a little less black and white, slightly less German and a lot less silent.
His intention, if misguided, was more honourable than heretical. Even though this cut is shorter than usual, it does include footage that was previously thought lost, while missing scenes are recreated with photographs and illustrations.

The brand new trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus officially debuted today in Anaheim, Calif. at WonderCon, the fan convention little sister of Comic-Con. Screenwriter Damon Lindelof hosted the panel that featured Scott, and Prometheus costars Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender, and before screening the trailer, they promised the two-and-a-half-minute clip would help resolve many pressing questions fans have about the film.
The trailer does indeed illuminate a bit more of the film’s storyline. Check it out below:

"The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?
Here's the full press release with all of the nominations:

In A Better World (Sony) Winner of last year’s Best Foreign Film Oscar, this Danish export looks at two fractured families and the effect that the adult world dysfunction has on their two sons, who form an immediate and potentially deadly bond. Director Susanne Bier delivers another powerful work that maintains its drive during the films’ first 2/3, then falters somewhat during the last act. Still, well-worth seeing, and beautifully made. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Commentary by Bier and editor Pernille Bech Christensen; Interview with Bier. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
X-men First Class (20th Century Fox) “Origins” film set in the early 1960s, traces the beginnings of Magento and Professor X (played ably here by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy), and how the once-close friends and colleagues became bitter enemies.
