New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment’s five selections reflect the month of June 2024.

Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s offerings include a father gone mad, deadly dares, and more.

The zombie horror comedy Buck Wild will be coming to town this February. Buck Wild is a film from director Tyler Glodt (The Eves) and the film stars Matthew Albrecht (The Artist), Mark Ford (The Eves), Meg Cionni (The Fear Chamber) and Joe Stevens (True Grit). As well, the official artwork is available above as the film reaches a February 18th release on video-on-demand. Buck Wild is a strange tale. Several friends set off on a hiking and hunting trip. New zombie comedy 'Buck Wild' sees a devastating Chupacabra virus turning the locals into the walking dead. And Millennium Entertainment are the guys responsible for dropping it onto DVD this coming March. Get ready for 10 truly terrifying nights when Washington, D.C.’s Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival haunts the AFI Silver Theatre on Oct 10-19 for the fest’s 8th annual edition.

Things really jolt alive on the 10th with the Opening Night film Willow Creek, a surprising genre entry by comedian-turned-director Bobcat Goldthwait, who tells the tale about a couple of amateur Bigfoot hunters who get in way over their heads in the woods. Goldthwait will be on hand for a post-screening Q&A moderated by Film Comment‘s Laura Kern. Also playing on this opening night are a program of scary short films and the feature An American Terror, a post-Columbine fright flick by Haylar Garcia.

As for the other nine nights, sticking true to the “International” in the fest’s name are movies such as the Ireland/France/Sweden co-production Dark Touch by Marina de Van about...

The 2nd annual South Texas Underground Film Festival, running Oct. 3-6 in Corpus Christi, Texas, is a massive celebration of international alternative cinema, including plenty from Texas filmmakers, of course.

The fest opened on the 3rd with the drop-dead hilarious comedy Pictures of Superheroes by Austin filmmaker Don Swaynos.

But, there’s still plenty more to see throughout the jam-packed weekend wherein films screen from morning until, well, early into the next morning.

The film that’s absolutely not to be missed is the screening on the 6th at 10:30 a.m. of Savage Witches, the amazing celebration of the art of filmmaking by British directors Daniel Fawcett & Clara Pais. A colorful spectacle of multiple filmmaking styles, Savage Witches is a real joy to experience.

The 6th annual Arizona Underground Film Festival might be beginning on the unluckiest day of the year — Friday the 13th — but the residents of Tucson are lucky for this 9-night extravaganza of wild and wooly cinema from all over the globe. The fest runs Sept. 13-21 at The Screening Room and other locations.

Opening Night films include the retro, music-fueled slasher flick Discopath by Renaud Gauthier and the Internet-based bloodbath Truth Or Dare, directed by scream queen Jessica Cameron making her filmmaking debut. The last film of the fest on the 21st is the cryptic post-apocalyptic thriller Dust of War, directed by Andrew Kightlinger.

The rest of the fest includes mind-bending fiction flicks like the cult-ish Fateful Findings by Neil Breen; the 90-minute, one-shot noir Worm by Andrew Bowser; Zach Clark’s twisted holiday movie White Reindeer; Drew Tobia’s surreal See You Next Tuesday; as well as challenging documentaries...

The first 10 titles that will be screening at the upcoming Dallas International Film Festival have been announced, marking the local premieres of Jeff Nichols' Mud, Yen Tan's Pit Stop, and Matt Johnson's The Dirties. The festival's 7th edition will run from April 4-14. Zombie movies. Sometimes the mere mention of them gets us giddy. A new indie one with a rather interesting namesake is on its way, and let's all just sit and hope that it lives up to the mayhem promised by its title.

Synopsis

When Craig invites his friends, Lance and Tom, and his cousin, a New Yorker with a duffle bag and a secret, for a boys’ hunting trip to a small Texas town, he doesn’t realize they will be the ones trying to survive. Facing the fast-spreading Chupacabra virus as well as their own personal baggage leads to a weekend none of the four will soon forget.

The Eves is a hybrid of the horror film mixed with the thriller. This is also a film from Conation, whose other title Buck Wild has not been released yet. The Eves moved to DVD August 23rd through Osiris Entertainment, with Gravitas Ventures hosting the video-on-demand launch this month. Check your Netflix queue if you like a little mystery with your healthy serving of blood and T & A. Conation uses these horror conventions throughout the first half of the film; however, the tension improves in the second half, when a killer stalks this group of friends. All they want is some fun in the sun during Spring Break, but they find a farm full of bodies instead.

Many of the corpses have the words "delivered" etched on their foreheads.
