Jack Verdon (Ray Liotta) is a homicide detective in Washington, called to a murder scene that looks familiar. The victim is an old flame of his, murdered at a place where they had enjoyed a bit of loving many years back. This places him on the list of suspects, though he knows it is just a formality. However, more and more bodies start to turn up, all with the same grisly Mo, all with a sexual history with Jack and so the hunt is on for a serial killer who seems to know an impossible amount about Jack’s past.

The River Murders boasts an intriguing premise and quasi-religious undertones, with the killer (whose identity but not his motives we discover relatively early on) quoting passages and characters from the Bible within the various notes he leaves for the police and FBI. This could draw comparisons with David Fincher’s Seven,...

The Sitter (DVD/Blu-ray)
When the world’s most irresponsible babysitter takes three of the world’s worst kids on an unforgettable overnight adventure through the streets of New York City, it’s anyone’s guess who’s going to make it home in one piece. Starring Jonah Hill (Knocked Up, Get Him To The Greek) and Sam Rockwell (Moon & The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), The Sitter is a new level of twisted and debauched hilarity from the director of Pineapple Express, David Gordon Green.

Michael Rodrick has starred in more than his share of genre films and TV shows, from Charmed to 24 to this year's The River Murders. Just released on DVD, the film is about a homicide detective, played by Ray Liotta, investigating a series of murders in which he has an unusually high personal stake – all of the victims are his ex-girlfriends. Rodrick plays the film's antagonist, John Lee, a sociopath determined to atone for his sins, no matter what the cost. Check out my interview with Rodrick after the jump How would you describe The River Murders? The River Murders is an allegory. A story discussing much grander ideas and truths. The River Murders is in many ways a morality tale. The film takes on the...

Ray Liotta has done a lot of direct-to-dvd garbage in the last decade, and you have to be an awfully big fan of his to sort through it all and still be able to give an objective report on which of his projects are diamonds in the rough and which ones are the rough. His performances vary from one film to the next despite the fact that he seems to play the same character in each. It’s as if he’s stopped challenging himself and just wants to keep his bank account in the black, and when that mindset takes over, standards drop in favor of zeros. Consequently, when you’re not a Ray Liotta fanatic but you’re still aware of the recent plight of his career, you don’t go into one of his films expecting much. Luckily, that means his films have the potential to be unexpected surprises,...

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
Abduction - Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Alfred Molina
Dolphin Tale 3D - Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Harry Connick Jr.
Killer Elite - Jason Statham, Clive Owen, Robert De Niro
Moneyball - Brad Pitt, Robin Wright, Jonah Hill
Movie of the Week
Moneyball
The Stars: Brad Pitt, Robin Wright, Jonah Hill
The Plot: The story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane’s successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players.
The Buzz: Correct me if I’m wrong, but has there ever been a really great baseball movie? Yes, there have been a few, like Major League, Bull Durham, and A League of Their Own. Those are comedies though, so let me rephrase the question: has there ever been a really great baseball drama? Hmm, The Natural was decent, albeit dated and a consequently a bit cheesy.

Bridesmaids Watching this on Blu-ray it was my second time seeing this film so watching the unrated version I really didn't notice any major differences outside of some scenes seeming to run a bit long. When I wrote my theatrical review I ended it saying "I'm not sure I want to see it again," and after seeing it again I still feel that way.
I was watching it with my girlfriend and the longer and longer the film wore on she was getting frustrated with how many bad things happen with Kristen Wiig's character rather than how many funny things were happening. It was an interesting complaint and I'm not sure if it was a reaction to the additional six minutes on the unrated cut, but I also got the impression she wouldn't even be interested in giving the theatrical cut a spin.

This Tuesday wont be the most rewarding release date of the month, as only two genre pieces are tapped to hit shelves (neither of which muster an abnormal amount of anticipation): After Darks Area 51 and the underwhelming thriller, The River Murders. Area 51 is exactly what it sounds like, a trip into extraterrestrial insanity. Like most conspiracy driven films, this one has been kept under wraps, unless you happen to be one of those who caugh…...
