- TriviaThe scene of George escaping a flooded tube station is inspired by a real incident in which the Balham tube station flooded on Oct. 14, 1940, while about 600 people were sheltering in the station. According to the Imperial War Museum, at 8:02pm, a bomb dropped on the station. Water, gas, and sewage lines were ruptured, and many people drowned. At least 68 people were killed.

The Blitz is a good film, it had the potential to be excellent. The occasional fast & explosive action will engage you, but the story felt a little disjointed and staggered. This film had a mix of themes and events that at times felt misplaced. It should have been a TV series where the characters and circumstances were better explored. A war drama it was but not completely through the eyes of a child as suggested in some descriptions. The story is told using the encounters of marginalised groups in 1940 in London during the Blitz. Some scenes felt unnecessary, the film may have flowed better without them. It is refreshing to see a war story unravel through the experiences of a child, women and diverse groups. Discrimination was appropriately illustrated. The scene in the bunker where segregation was discussed was an occurrence that needed the limelight, McQueen held that scene well. 'Scenes' were more memorable rather than the impact of the story - the jazz club, the dancing, the bonding family on the piano, the bombings, the children on the returning train and on the tracks, the women at work & their social exchanges and all of the scenes that included the character Ife. Not too sure about the possibly unintentional Dickensian homage; a bit too Oliver Twist and Bill Sikes for my liking. McQueen clearly knows how to envision and deliver a memorable moment. He is good storyteller and impeccable Director. The film set, visual effects & special effects were excellent. The soundtrack and use of sound were varied and timely. The acting was fabulous. What makes this film stand out is the reminder of the whitewashed historical stories told in many war movies. This film will appeal to a range of diverse groups especially those who acknowledge and have an interest in how historical experiences differ for everyone.
