Bree Mills takes a serious approach to her first foray into writing/directing a Gay Porn feature, working here in the suspense thriller genre. The explicit XXX scenes are rather cold -professional sex performances, but the acting scenes are highly-charged and worthy of praise.
Without giving away the surprises in her story, it structurally resembles the popular format of Agatha Christie's "10 Little Indians". Men show up for a mysterious dinner party, not knowing what to expect and why they were invited. Chief protagonist is Michael Del Ray, who surmises it must be some form of a Reality-TV show, perhaps with a prize in store, while the other attendees simply go with the flow. Bree generates and sustains considerable suspense, as the contrasting guys have conflicts develop among them, while they compare notes and we get to see flashbacks of sex scenes involving them.
Key ingredient uniting everyone is that they are all past lovers of one James Montgomery, played by Johnny Ford, who we see humping in flashbacks but does not enter the show in present-day until Act III, after two hours of running time. The plot twists escalate and become more and more sinister and macabre, making watching "The Last Course" an unsettling experience. The climax of Act III, when the dinner party's last course is served (dessert plus an orgy) is slightly cryptic, as evidenced in the final title reading: "The End (or is it?)".
Besides the expected high-quality acting by Del Ray as the character the viewer can most identify with, Ford makes a terrific, cult-like villain, quite scary at times; Dante Colle (biggest name star in the cast), is forceful and quite sympathetic as the character most victimized in the past by Ford; and showy performances by campy Dakota Payne as the most overtly "Gay" character and Michael Boston as the wound-too-tight fellow -with sparks exploding between them. In the butler role, Lance Hart wearing an eye-patch creates a memorably sinister presence. (Subsequent to shooting this movie, Hart transitioned to become a TS starlet renamed Lucy Hart, and I'm looking forward to their screen roles in future.)
As far as the solution to the story's mystery, Bree Mills has outdone herself in terms of introducing a strange fetish into the mix.
