Pigeon Shrine FrightFest 2024, the UK’s No.1 horror & fantasy film festival, will, for the first time, present its five-day extravaganza at The Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, London, taking over all seven screens, including the two Odeon Luxe West End screens.

Running from Thursday August 22nd – Monday 26th August, Pigeon Shrine FrightFest will showcase sixty-nine features from across the world, including twenty-five main screen premieres and forty-five Discovery Screen titles, embracing the famed ‘First Blood’ strand, the latest genre documentaries, and some exciting restorations and retrospectives. Plus, there’s the regular short-film showcase, panels, and some surprise 25th edition extras. This year there are twenty-eight world premieres, with eleven countries represented, spanning four continents.

The 25th edition of the Pigeon Shrine FrightFest promises to be an unforgettable celebration of horror cinema, taking place between 22 August to 26 August 2024.

It’s hard to comprehend just how many films will be on offer to see at this fantastic event, so we have broken down each of the screens into articles for you to digest. And we may have saved the best (this one) until last!

Pigeon Shrine FrightFest 2024, the UK’s premier horror and fantasy film festival, has announced its thrilling lineup for this year’s event. Marking its 25th edition, the festival will run from Thursday, 22 August to Monday, 26 August, taking over the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London. For the first time, the festival will utilise all seven screens, including two Odeon Luxe West End screens, to showcase a diverse selection of horror films from around the globe.

The festival opens with the world premiere of Broken Bird, the highly anticipated directorial debut from actress-filmmaker Joanne Mitchell. Based on an original story by Tracey Sheals and Mitchell’s award-winning short Sybil, the film tells the disturbing tale of a mortician, played by Rebecca Calder, whose dark desires spiral out of control.

Closing the festival is the English premiere of The Substance, the latest film from French writer-director Coralie Fargeat, known for her previous hit Revenge.

Striking the balance between harsh vibes and exceptional cinema, I’m pleased to announce our next program at the Roxy: The Film Stage has teamed with Chapo Trap House‘s Movie Mindset for Fidelio, a one-week, four-film program on the 1%’s malevolent influence, deep-state connections, and sexual corruption (fun edition).

It begins with Saturday, August 3’s double-bill of Abel Ferrara’s Welcome to New York and a 25th-anniversary presentation of Eyes Wide Shut on 35mm; the following week brings prints of Clint Eastwood’s delightfully absurd (or not?) potboiler Absolute Power and Roman Polanski’s late-career triumph The Ghost Writer. For 12 seasons, "Murder, She Wrote" was the definitive cozy murder mystery show. Set in the small and charming yet dead-body-filled fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, the show wormed its way into the hearts of procedural fans everywhere with its familiar structure and unlikely hero -- middle-aged mystery writer Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury). While the actor behind the beloved amateur sleuth passed away in 2022, "Murder, She Wrote" lives on, both in the form of much-watched reruns and in an upcoming movie adaptation.

Tom Wilkinson, the Oscar-nominated British actor best known for roles in The Full Monty, In the Bedroom, and Batman Begins, has died at the age of 75.

Wilkinson’s family confirmed the charactor actor’s death Saturday in a statement (via the BBC), noting that he died “suddenly.”

“It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Wilkinson announce that he died suddenly at home on December 30,” the family said in a statement. “His wife and family were with him. The family asks for privacy at this time.”

The 2nd annual Children’s & Family Emmys got underway on Saturday night, starting with the Children’s & Family Creative Arts Emmys at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. According to early results — pending final tallies — Disney+ and Netflix tied the lead with nine wins overall.

The most honored program of the evening was actually Netflix’s “Lost Ollie,” which scored five trophies. Disney+’s wins included multiple awards for “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” and animated series “Baymax!” Nickelodeon picked up five wins.

And it was also a good night for Disney via its linear Disney Channel, which picked up four wins.

India’s Film Bazaar, the Singapore-based Asia TV Forum & Market’s (Atf) IP Accelerator Project Market (Aipa) and the Southeast Asian Audio-Visual Association (Saava) have formed a project market partnership.

Film Bazaar, South Asia’s largest film market is operated by India’s National Film Development Corporation (Nfdc) and runs concurrently with the International Film Festival of India (Iffi). The project market partnership signed with Saava and Nfdc arranges for an exchange of projects in development and/or work-in-progress between them.

The exchanges start this year, with “Becoming”, a feature-length India-South Korea production from the documentary section of Film Bazaar’s co-production market going to Aipa 2023. Next year, one or more of Aipa’s projects in the current edition will be given an automatic entry into 2024’s edition of the Film Bazaar’s co-production market.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced the U.S. and international recipients of the 2023 Academy Gold Fellowship for Women.

Erica Eng and July Jung are the most recent filmmakers to receive the fellowship, each with a prize of $35,000. Now in its sixth year, this is the second year the fellowship has worked in partnership with Chanel.

Part of Academy Gold, a global talent development and inclusion initiative, the Fellowship for Women is a one-year program that combines direct support, personalized mentorship and access to once-in-a-lifetime networking opportunities for emerging women filmmakers to further their pursuits in the field. LevelK has boarded “The Invisible Fight,” Estonian director Rainer Sarnet’s kung fu comedy set in an Orthodox monastery in the former Soviet Union. The film world premieres Aug. 11 in the main competition of the Locarno Film Festival.

“The Invisible Fight” is set in 1973 on the Soviet-Chinese border, where Private Rafael is on guard duty when his border post is attacked by a band of Chinese warriors schooled in the ancient art of kung fu. Burch is a producer, writer, director and series regular on Apple TV’s comedy series Mythic Quest, which wrapped its third season in January.
