Creating a successful manga is not an easy feat, on top of that, delivering the manga for years and years adds another burden for the mangaka. The stories of Bleach‘s creator Tite Kubo and One Piece‘s Eiichiro Oda shed light on the often gruesome journeys behind the carefully crafted pages we consume, and it is anything but glamorous.

For Kubo, the pressure of meeting strict serialization demands and editorial expectations nearly derailed his career. His struggles provide a glimpse into the darker side of manga creation, where burnout, stress, and creative constraints are constant challenges. And it surprises us how Oda has managed to deliver consistently for decades amid such work pressure.

Tite Kubo's "Bleach" is unquestionably one of the most popular manga/anime of the 2000s. But 700 chapters? 390+ (and counting) episodes? Coming to it late probably sounds like a daunting challenge. Is this all worth the deep dive, especially when you'll get different answers about how well "Bleach" holds up?
"Bleach" stars Ichigo Kurosaki, a Japanese teen living in the average metropolis of Karakura Town. Ichigo has a few things that set him apart from his peers: his (natural) orange hair, his punk attitude, and his ability to see ghosts. One day, he meets Rukia Kikuichi, a "Soul Reaper" who hunts evil spirits ("Hollows"). Injured in a battle, Rukia passes her powers to Ichigo. While Rukia recovers, Ichigo takes up her duties hunting Hollows.
The early set-up of "Bleach" is a "Yu Yu Hakusho" riff — an urban fantasy with a punk protagonist, shinigami girl sidekick, demon villains, etc. Then, the main...

Criticizing Bleach and Tite Kubo is something anime and manga fans are more than familiar with. For a series that started out with such potential, it found itself climbing down the stairs one step at a time. While it wasn’t something fans appreciated so much, the series still stands amongst the Big 3. Some may call it the weakest of them, but there were still things that made it as good as it is now.

There were some scenes that became a little too problematic for the fans. One of which included Orihime pecking an unconscious Ichigo. The chemistry between the two characters has existed from the very beginning of the series and there have also been scenes that created a path for their romance to spark.

As Hollywood has begun to focus more and more on live-action adaptations of anime, Tite Kubo’s Bleach has been largely ignored so far. The race with the adaptations began with Netflix’s One Piece live-action, and studios quickly realized the untapped otaku market.
A recent leak revealed that Bleach might be close to receiving a live-action as well, and fans have already begun speculating who would be the best pick to play the protagonist, Ichigo. The answer is unanimous: it’s an actor who has already proved his mettle in Netflix’s One Piece.

The underdog of the Big Three anime series, Bleach, by Tite Kubo, is known to be one of the greatest anime and manga series of all time. The series has not only inspired many other mangakas but has also been referenced in their works. The biggest example of this is Jujutsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami.

The underdog of the Big Three anime series, Bleach, made a return to the anime industry a few years ago, and it once again proved why it was considered one of the best stories yet. The series made a great impact on the overall popularity of the franchise as it was able to tackle all the problems that the series faced in the prequel show, which started in 2004.

The return of Bleach is one of the most glorious comebacks in the history of anime. Studio Pierrot put their all into the project; and it showed in the spectacular animation and the anime original scenes. They have elevated the charm of the final war and fans couldn’t be happier. But the preferential treatment that Bleach is getting makes fans wonder why the same enthusiasm isn’t directed towards other anime. For instance, Boruto.

There are countless anime in the modern generation that have earned worldwide fame due to the characters and narrative. However, when the question of impact arises, there are barely any new anime that has had the same impact as Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach. They carry a greater weight of nostalgia and are considered to be the pillars of the industry.
The anime and manga industry has become mainstream, but it was the efforts of those four franchises that made it possible. Due to their impacts, Dragon Ball is called the godfather of anime, and the other three are known as the Big Three of anime. Even though modern-generation anime are quite popular, October might cause a power shift with a nostalgic touch.

Bleach’s return has brought back the era when the Big Three dominated the anime and manga industry. With One Piece and Bleach both in their final saga, old-generation anime fans can barely control their excitement. However, other fandoms are often disappointed with Bleach‘s inability to get out of its “best villain” shell, even after a decade-long hiatus.
Bleach has a number of great villains who bring dynamism to the narrative, yet the fans always praise Aizen Sosuke. There is no doubt that Aizen will always be one of the greatest antagonists ever, but somewhere, his popularity is restricting the growth of the other villains of the franchise. Fans believe him to be a one-man show like Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sukuna.

In a recent interview with Daisuke Sakuma on his radio talk show, Bleach creator Tite Kubo shared insights into his creative process, revealing that he kept his editor at arm’s length, never allowing him to interfere in the manga.
“I’m the type of writer who doesn’t really have meetings with my editor,” Kubo stated.
Unlike many manga creators who frequently consult with their editors, Kubo preferred to work on his own terms.
“When I was serializing, my editor would come to pick up the manuscript once it was done. I’d tell them, ‘Next week, it’ll go like this,’ and then they’d leave,” he explained.
Sakuma expressed surprise at this approach, noting that it’s common for editors to be heavily involved in shaping a manga’s story.

Bleach is one of the Big Three of anime and returned after a decade-long hiatus in October 2022. Even though it is one of the most popular ones in the anime and manga industry, it remains the least popular one when it comes to the Big Three. Naruto and One Piece have always dominated Tite Kubo’s masterpiece, with the former ruling overseas and the latter dominating Japan.
After the hiatus began, most Bleach fans lost all hope and accepted the third place, but since its return, they have started to believe in its supremacy again. They even pointed out several points that makes it better than the other mangas.

Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan became one of the most popular anime of the modern generation. Even though it concluded in November 2023, fans still discuss the narrative and how the plot twists made it one of the best. The fans were entertained throughout the series, but Attack on Titan’s controversial ending left a poor aftertaste for them.
Hajime Isayama tried his best to change as much as possible at the last moment, but he could not make any major changes. The controversial ending was problematic, but it did not affect the overall popularity of the series. Apart from Hajime Isayama’s storytelling, there was another great thing about the mangaka that the Big Three of anime could not achieve.

Tite Kubo’s Bleach has some great characters who carry the story on their shoulders. Apart from Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki, there were Kisuke Urahara, Renji Abarai, Kenpachi Zaraki, Aizen Sosuke, etc., who equally contributed to the story. Even though all of them held everyone’s attention, there were a few characters who were quite annoying from the moment they appeared.
A question was asked on Reddit to state the most annoying characters in Bleach. While a few had different answers, most of them unanimously voted for Marechiyo Omaeda. Marechiyo Omaeda is the lieutenant of the Second Division in Soul Society. The fans were annoyed with everything about him. Kubo made a startling admission about his favorite arc from the anime series. Contrary to what many might expect, the mangaka’s top pick wasn’t drawn from the pages of his own creation. Instead, Kubo singled out an anime-original storyline, praising its execution and impact.

When Tite Kubo’s Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War released its first episode all the way back in 2022, it led to unreal hype and a resurgence of Bleach fans. The series is believed to be on par with the original series, with some even considering that it is better than it. The new series received a ton of changes, apart from featuring new abilities and faces in the anime.

The old characters underwent massive changes, along with superior animation. Though the fans were happy with everything introduced in the current series, it featured a major change: the original gore from the manga was skipped for the majority of the part in the anime.
Though fans are unhappy with this decision, it turns out there was a clever reason behind it, which has only led to the anime becoming more popular than before.

Tite Kubo’s Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War had the old generation of anime fans jumping in excitement. After 366 episodes, Bleach went on a hiatus. Almost after a decade, it came back with the final arc. While everyone feared that fans might not like it, the exact opposite happened.
Kubo had hoped for Bleach to work, and it did work, increasing its fan following substantially. Tite Kubo has always been straightforward with his words and work. Whatever he decides is good for his magnum opus, he does it. He even confirmed during an interview that he is pretty focused on his work.

Thanks to Tite Kubo, Bleach has several elements from the Western world. The mangaka prefers English songs over Japanese songs and even listens to MTV while working on his drafts. Another thing...

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War saw the Shonen anime making a return after a decade. Since then, it has regained its glory days, and the fans have praised the animation and character designs. It is fair to say even though Bleach was one of the Big Three, One Piece and Naruto’s popularity overshadowed it.
But it does not mean that Tite Kubo is not a great mangaka. He possesses the same quality as Eiichiro Oda, but most fans overlooked it. He does not leave loose strings and explains every connection properly. After Thousand Year Blood War, the fans realized his quality as a mangaka and defended him on social media.

Eiichiro Oda is often praised for his foreshadowing skills and connecting everything through a string. Tite Kubo also possesses the same capability, but he barely even got the recognition.

Bleach’s success has been ever-growing. The Thousand-Year Blood War arc stands as one of the best with its manga and anime both living as an exception outside of the rushed ending of Tite Kubo’s tour de force. While it is showered with constant praise, there isn’t much it can do to account for the various fluctuations the series has seen in its full run.

It is still regarded as one of the best arcs. However, that wasn’t the one that convinced the mangaka that his series needed a soft reboot. There have been many arcs in the series, some of which the fans loved, putting them on pedestals; while others were a clear miss, the sheer amount of fillers becoming a glaring problem to them.

Bleach as a manga and anime has been driven by criticism that is both constructive and obstructive, some of which Tite Kubo took well while others that he reacted to with a strong footing. Despite its success, it has not been spared from being scrutinized by fans because of the flaws that become more and more evident the more it is rewatched.

At the same time, it is such a masterpiece that it can be reread and rewatched as a comfort work. This juxtaposition of the series makes it a paradox of its own. There were many factors that came into play with how contradictory the existence of the series became, making it both good and flawed at the same time. However, there was a possibility that it could have been better.
