Rockstar Games has never provided a clear answer for a lack of a Windows port. Most of the reasons found online are either speculations or rumors. The most common explanation is that due to technical issues and creative differences, Rockstar failed to code the game for Windows by a given deadline.
Others believe Rockstar was less confident in their Windows ports of the games following the mixed response to the Windows version of Grand Theft Auto IV (2008). As a result, they didn't provide any allocation for a Windows port for Red Dead Redemption. However, this claim would be proven false after the successful launch of Grand Theft Auto V (2013) in Windows which received rave reviews. Rockstar didn't even port the game to eighth generation consoles until 13 years later in 2023 when they finally released the game for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch when ninth-gen consoles took over the market.
Moreover, the gaming community has been frustrated with Rockstar's lack of accountability regarding Red Dead Redemption's absence from PC since 2010. After Red Dead Redemption II (2018)'s launch on Windows in 2019, this frustration has increased even so. For now, the best way to play the game on PC is to use an emulator.

Like most Rockstar protagonists, John is an anti-hero. He is a former member of a gang of killers and thieves. John has attempted to leave the life of an outlaw behind him to have a better life for his family. But the events of the game force him back to hunt down his former gang members. Choices you make in the game determine just how bad John can be.
The map in the game says it's 1910, but it has been stated the game takes place in 1911.
