But while there are echoes of that here, the two tell their stories in very different ways.

The 21st Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) Awards, which highlight Irish filmmakers, television creators and performers, saw Pat Collins’ That They May Face The Rising Sun win Best Film in an upset. Despite earning a second-best 11 nominations, the top award was its only win.

Lies We Tell all with three wins: for Director Lisa Mulcahy, Lead Actress Agnes O’Casey, and Best Script. It came in with 13nominations.

The Irish Film and TV Academy (IFTA) has unveiled the nominees for its 2024 awards, with Murphy going up against “Saltburn’s'” Barry Keoghan and “All of Us Strangers” star Andrew Scott in the best actor category. Elsewhere, Jessie Buckley (“Fingernails”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Foe”) are among those nominated for best actress, while Paul Mescal (“All of Us Strangers”) and Kenneth Branagh (“Oppenheimer”) are in the running for best supporting actor.

Nominations are out for the 21st Irish Film & Television Awards with Lisa Mulcahy’s thriller Lies We Tell leading the pack on the feature side at 13, and crime drama Kin heading up the TV fields with 11 (scroll down for the ful list of nominees). “Outer Banks” Season 4 has added five new cast members, Variety has learned.

J. Anthony Crane, Pollyanna McIntosh, Brianna Brown, Rigo Sanchez, and Mia Challis have all joined the popular adventure drama series in recurring guest star roles.

The official description for the series states, “‘Outer Banks’ is a coming of age story that follows the tight-knit group of Pogues as they navigate a chain of illicit events filled with mystery, adventure, a high-stakes treasure hunt and the escalating conflict with their rivals.”

“Outer Banks” originally debuted in 2020 and proved to be a major hit for Netflix. Per the streamer, Season 3 of the series spent six weeks on the global Top 10 English TV list and reached the Top 10 charts in 77 countries.

Dublin-based outfit Wildcard Distribution has picked up’s Dublin world premiere King Frankie for release in UK and Irish cinemas.

It is the feature debut of writer-director Dermot Malone and stars Bad Sisters actor Peter Coonan as a Dublin taxi driver, who runs his own taxi firm. While coming to terms with his father’s recent death and going through the associated rituals, the taxi driver comes face to face with something that happened 10 years ago. The filmmakers describe the film as “a “Celtic Tiger tale you have not seen”.

The latest “The Walking Dead” spinoff, “The Ones Who Live,” premieres on AMC Feb. 25, reuniting Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and Dana Gurira’s Michonne for the first time since 2018 and Season 9 of the long-running zombie show. Real-world misgivings about Big Pharma, experimental medicines, and scientific ethics fuel this Irish horror movie where human lab-rats must follow one important rule: don’t fall asleep. Part of the 2023 Belfast Film Festival, Ian Hunt-Duffy’s début feature Double Blind is a horror/thriller film set in a laboratory complex where volunteers are participating in the clinical trial of a new drug which has unexpected side effects. Star Pollyanna McIntosh and I often seem to encounter each other around Halloween, and in this case it was on the day itself that I met up with her and Ian, so we chatted for a while before the interview got started. I explained that I had quickly arranged to see the film when I spotted it in the festival line-up because I feel that Ireland is the go-to place for horror at the moment, and is even giving South Korea a run for its money.

The Irish government set out its 2024 budget this afternoon, which included a surprise shift to the country’s tax incentive structure.

Irish Film and TV productions are now able to claim the country’s 32% tax break on eligible expenditure up to €125m, raised from €70m.

Screen Ireland, the national agency for the Irish screen industry, welcomed the increase and set out plans to support new initiatives and facilitate production across the country. The plans include the launch of a new Creative Clusters Programme for 2024 targeting emerging screen talent and communities across the country, with a pilot scheme proposed for County Cork.

“In a landscape where global film and TV production budgets have reached an all-time high, the increase in the eligible expenditure cap will allow Ireland to attract a wider range of high-quality, larger scale production,” said Susan Bergin, Chair of the Board of Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland.

The Newport Beach Film Festival, which will run from Oct. 12-19 this year, has announced their opening and closing night films.

Marco Perego’s “The Absence of Eden,” which stars Zoë Saldaña, will open the festival on Oct. 12 at the Edwards Big Newport. Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” starring Paul Giamatti, will close the festival on Oct. 19. The 24th festival will take place in person and feature 91 films from around the world.

Filmmakers will be present for a moderated interview before “The Absence of Eden” screens. The film follows an Ice agent (Garrett Hedlund) grappling with the moral conflict of border security and an undocumented woman (Saldaña) fighting to get away from a merciless cartel; the paths of these two individuals intersect as they join together to save an innocent girl’s life.

Apocalypse Clown has sold to Capstone Pictures (through Telepool) for the US and Canada; Telepool for German-speaking territories; Njuta for Scandinavia, McF Megacom for the Adriatics; Arna Media for Russia and Cis; Pictureworks for India; and Aardwolf for airlines.

Under the partnership 88th Street, the new feature production arm of the Oscar-qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival, will develop select horror, thriller and other genre content with filmmakers from HollyShorts selections.
