The cult-favorite Adult Swim animated series Metalocalypse began airing back in 2006, following the exploits of the infamous death metal band Dethklok. Over four seasons and one epic rock opera special, creator Brendan Small’s absurdist musical world captured legions of fans with its blistering metal songs, irreverent humor, and unflinching gore. After years away, Dethklok now makes their cinematic debut in Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar.

Picking up right where The Doomstar Requiem left off, the movie finds the members of Dethklok emerging from hiatus to announce a new album and tour. But dark forces from their past threaten to bring about the prophesied “Metalocalypse,” which could destroy the world.

Filmmaker Andrew Jarecki continues his investigation of convicted murderer Robert Durst in The Jinx – Part Two, a six-episode documentary series premiering on Max on April 21, 2024. The streaming service’s April lineup also includes the seven-episode limited series The Sympathizer, based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and starring Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr in multiple roles.

Comedian Alex Edelman hosts a brand new comedy special, and Conan O’Brien visits favorite fans from his podcast series in the four-episode unscripted series Conan O’Brien Must Go. The documentary series The Synanon Fix exploring the drug rehabilitation program joins Max’s lineup on April 1st. When I read that Mike Flanagan was planning to turn The Fall of the House of Usher into an eight-hour mini-series for Netflix I did a major double take. I’ve read the story, and I’ve seen an astounding number of takes on it, from Roger Corman’s classic to reimaginings like The Fall of Usher and Lady Usher. But there was no possible way I could see someone getting eight hours of material out of it.

Adult Swim’s cult classic death metal parody series Metalocalypse has brought their latest venture in the form of the animated movie Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar, which concludes the lush beauty of the gory, satanic spectacle, the bone-tickling humor, and profanity-filled self-awareness of the series with one last death smash and headbanger. Centered around the fictional death metal band Dethklok, the series pokes fun at the exalted mannerisms and myths generally associated with the heavy metal genre and celebrates its tropes and impact. It is unknown whether Kiminori Wakasugi’s manga series based on a similar subject matter, Detroit Metal City, inspired the creation of the series, but what we know for sure is that the original albums, expansive in-universe lore, and live tours in the real world have imbued a uniqueness to Metalocalypse, something that is far from waning even after a decade since the original series’ cancellation.

Dethklok are back. The Metalocalypse heroes have unleashed Dethalbum IV — the animated band’s fourth studio album — coinciding with the release of the new movie Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar. It marks the band’s first new album in 11 years.
