During that tenure, she has given iconic performances in films like Black, Chalte Chalte, Mardaani, and recently in the award-winning Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway. Rani is the definition of being versatile as an actor and has performed many different roles and excelled in all of them.
One film in which she could have had an opportunity to show her prowess as an actor was Kal Ho Naa Ho, directed by Nikkhil Advani and produced by Karan Johar. However, the role went to Preity Zinta, and Rani confronted Karan Johar on the latter’s talk show, Koffee with Karan, about not taking her for the film.

Mumbai, March 7 (Ians) In an industry where films have traditionally been scripted around men, and woman-centric films have been the exceptions rather than the rule, a new generation of directors and screenwriters have overturned the gender imbalance, and delivered successful films centred around female protagonists.
On the eve of International Women’s Day, here’s a selection of seven Bollywood films that celebrate woman power.
‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, Alia Bhatt (2022): The Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, a biopic based on the life of ‘mafia queen’ Gangubai Kothewali, is centred around Alia Bhatt’s character, who was cheated and sold to a brothel in Kamathipura, Mumbai. From there, she allied with local politicians and the underworld to become a ‘don’ who was dreaded as much as she was respected for her good deeds.

Bollywood A-list star Rani Mukerji was in refreshingly candid form at Mumbai’s Ficci Frames media industry conference, proffering frank opinions on the Indian theatrical business.
The usual Hindi-language domination of the all-India box office was reversed for a period in 2021-22, when films from the south of India, including “Rrr,” “Kantara,” “Ponniyin Selvan” and “Vikram” dominated, and the northern counterparts from’ Bollywood’ struggled to become hits. Since then, the north-south competition has evolved again.
In 2023, there were only three south Indian films in the box office top 10, “Salaar,” “Jailer” and “Leo,” at numbers four, six and seven, respectively. However, Hindi-language films made by south Indian filmmakers – “Jawan” in pole position and “Animal” in third – performed exceedingly well.
“They listen to what the audiences want,” Mukerji said. “When cinema is evolving and everybody’s trying to cater to a diverse audience, sometimes you lose touch with the popular or the...

Rani Mukerji has said 2023 was a “myth-busting landmark” year for Hindi cinema, for not only did ambitious projects such as ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Gadar 2′ turn out to be blocbusters, but also content-driven films like ’12th Fail’ and ‘Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway’ disrupted the box office.
“It was a year when the underdogs won,” she said.
Mukerji, who has many big hits on her filmography and is married to hitmaker Aditya Chopra of Yash Raj Films, was speaking at the 24th edition of Ficci Frames in Mumbai on Tuesday.
The actress said: “The last few years have seen a dynamic environment for content. The pandemic forced us to adapt and innovate, and to reimagine the ways in which we connect with the audience because the consumers have evolved too and want us to deliver something unique for them.”

Bollywood A-list actor Ayushmann Khurrana scored another major hit in 2023 with comedy sequel “Dream Girl 2.” But he is still happy to have achieved what he describes as “validation.”
The film was one of several medium budget Hindi-language films that became box office successes, including “Omg 2,” “Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway,” “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke,” “Satyaprem Ki Katha” and “12th Fail.” These effectively debunked the notion that only big budget spectacles like “Pathaan” or “Jawan” would work at the post-pandemic Bollywood box office, which had a poor 2022.
“There was a conspiracy theory, maybe a year back, that Indian audiences [were] only looking for spectacles or larger-than-life films, but this year, a lot of films, which not really big budget but mid budget, did really well,” Khurrana told Variety. ”Dream Girl 2′ did well, so did ‘Omg 2,’ and ‘Gadar 2’ was technically also a mid budget film. Just before “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) arrives on PVOD May 16 (an unusually long 41 days after theatrical release), three films — two are new releases — ranked #1 this week.
May 12 saw the debut of two movies with similar plots. In “The Mother,” Jennifer Lopez is a retired government agent who rescues the daughter she gave up for adoption years before, while “Hypnotic” stars Ben Affleck as a cop trying to find his missing daughter. There the resemblance ends: “The Mother” is #1 at Netflix, while Robert Rodriguez’s $70 million “Hypnotic” opened in theaters to disastrous results.
The difference doesn’t lie with the couple’s respective star power, and both films draw on the same “Taken” template. However, “The Mother” seems fresher with Lopez in the Liam Neeson/Gerard Butler role and it’s a streaming original — a platform that makes it easier to attract viewers with a familiar name.
Affleck remains a viable draw.

Internationally sourced programming and stories placed alongside local content could be a solution to bring audiences back to Indian cinemas, a high-powered panel debated.
The panel was part of Indiantelevision.com’s annual industry event, The Content Hub, that recently concluded in Mumbai. Mayank Shroff, head of film distribution at Cinepolis, the Indian division of Latin American exhibition giant Cinepolis, said that while footfalls were back to 85% of pre-pandemic days, an innovative approach is required to bring the rest of the audiences back.
Shroff pointed to the success of Makoto Shinkai’s anime film “Suzume,” which accounted for 20% of the Cinepolis box office over the past weekend and “Evil Dead Rise,” which also pulled in decent numbers, both in the face of stiff competition from Eid holiday release “Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan,” starring superstar Salman Khan. The first quarter of 2023 has come to an end and the Hindi film industry has little to show for itself. The scene has been dismal, not because of the first quarter, but also because of the second quarter, which holds no promise of box-office boosters.
A lot of producers seem to think it is easier to create content for Ott platforms, which is why many makers have opted to produce for that medium. When you make Ott content, it’s an all-in-one deal. You complete the project, hand it over to the platform and cash out. No hassles such marketing or complying to the terms of cinema chains to endure.
It is you who make a film and it is some marketing wizkid who’ll decide how your film should be released. The problem, though, is that they know little or nothing about which film needs what kind of handling.

Top Bollywood star Rani Mukerji is basking in the box office success of “Mrs. Chatterjee vs. Norway,” which flies in the face of “cynicism” from “naysayers” as the actor describes it.
The film, directed by Ashima Chibber and written by Rahul Handa, Sameer Satija and Chibber, is based on the true story of an Indian couple whose children were taken away from them by Norwegian welfare services in 2011. Mukerji plays the titular Mrs. Chatterjee who battles with the Norwegian government to reunite with her children.
The modestly budgeted film released on March 17 and has grossed some $3.2 million worldwide so far.
“I truly believe that a good film will always find its audience, regardless of what the genre is. There was a lot of challenge for our film, because the new fashionable word that is going on is Ott ‘content’ – it is something that has bothered me a lot. Because I...

Rani Mukerji is known for her brilliant performances in a range of genres and especially for her complete immersion into her characters. Her newest film, Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway, showcases her talent in an intense, moving, and powerful role.
A heart-wrenching drama, Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway is the journey of a woman’s resolve to fight against all odds and take on a country to protect her children taken away without cause. For two long years to get her children back home, she fiercely battles Norway foster care officials and teachers with no understanding of the cultural differences, unfair court rulings, and betrayal everywhere. As the actress said in our interview, ‘Never underestimate an Indian mother,’ but more on that in a bit!
What a journey this film takes you on! I was in awe of Ms. Mukerji’s outstanding, brave, standing ovation-worthy performance in Mrs.Chatterjee Vs. Norway. However,...

Screen icon Rani Mukerji has had a wonderful, fulfilling career, and the roles, seemingly, continue to push and challenge the actress. The most recent example of this is playing a distraught mother in Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway; a stirring courtroom drama based on real events.
To mark the film’s release we had the pleasure in speaking to Mukerji, who talks in detail about playing a role of this nature, and shining a (harsh) light on a broken system, focusing in on institutional racism, and the inability to embrace other people’s cultures. She also talks about tapping into the emotional side of the performance, while also looking back across her illustrious career.
You can watch the full interview with Rani Mukerji here:

Actress Rani Mukerji spoke candidly about why the film ‘Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway’ speaks to her.
Rani in an exclusive BTS clip shared with IMDb, said: “The film resonates with one emotion which is the mother’s emotion. This movie is a reminder to all children in the world that there’s no greater emotion or relationship than with a mother. As a mother, I couldn’t place myself in Sagarika’s shoes because it is a painful thought to be separated from your child.
She added: “I can’t even imagine it. Animals too have a natural instinct with their children that if someone tries to take their children away, the mother will straightaway attack. It is the same with human mothers as well. If you try to do something with their child, they will not spare you.
“You forget to say thank you to your mothers and take them for granted.

Mumbai, March 17 (Ians) The Norwegian Ambassador to India, Hans Jacob Frydenlund, has objected to the representation of his country’s child welfare policies in the recently released film ‘Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway’.
The film stars Rani Mukerji in the lead and is based on the actual case with Sagarika Bhattacharya who was living there with her husband Anup Bhattacharya with two children.
Hans took to his Twitter and pointed out “factual inaccuracies” and said the story is a ‘fictional representation of the case’. He also shared that the cultural differences in the film, which serve as the primary factor in the case, are “completely false.”
Sharing a screenshot of an op-ed article on his Twitter that he wrote for a media house, he tweeted: “It incorrectly depicts Norway’s belief in family life and our respect for different cultures. Child welfare is a matter of great responsibility, never motivated by payments or profit.
