Film festivals are no longer just about movies. As top tier filmmakers and A-list stars continue to find great material and the budgets to go with it on television, the medium has become a competitive space for great narrative storytelling. In the famous opening line from J. G. Ballard’s High Rise the calm chaos of the character of Dr. Robert Laing is pinpointed perfectly. The strange mixture of violence and serenity in our avatar in Ballard’s moral maelstrom is part of what makes Tom Hiddleston such a compelling on-screen presence. In this interview James Kleinmann

(Or: welcome to the planet of the apes, where the apes are us.) Ben Wheatley's film High Rise is currently making waves and shocking people in its theatrical run, with its bleak story of societies happily degenerating into animal behavior. But earlier last year, Mr. Wheatley helped produce another film which pretty much hit on the same points: Steve Oram's irritatingly-named Aaaaaaaah!. Both films played at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, and seeing them in short succession makes it easy to see what attracted Ben Wheatley to Steve Oram's project. In Aaaaaaaah!, we are shown the outskirts of London and the people in it. Rather strange people, mind: they behave like apes. Though they are clothed and use everyday utilities and television, they grunt and...

Filmmakers and critics don't always have the easiest relationship. While critics often champion challenging films that might not otherwise reach a mainstream audience (see the big success of "The Witch" this past weekend), some filmmakers believe that the opinions of pundits who have never been involved in film production at any level have little weight. Director Ben Wheatley seems to be in that camp. "It’s a job that I wouldn’t want or seek out. As a creative person, I think you should be making stuff. That’s the challenge. Talking about other peoples stuff is weird. Why aren’t you making stuff? Resigned to the complex social dynamics unfolding around him, Laing bites the bullet and becomes neighbourly. As he struggles to establish his position, Laing’s good manners and sanity disintegrate along with the building. The lights go out and the lifts fail but the party goes on. People are the problem. After dropping an effective batch of teaser trailers and posters, StudioCanalUK has unleashed a high-octane official trailer that seduces with all the film's transfixing luxuries and violent dangers. Based on J.G. Ballard’s 1975 sci-fi novel of the same name, "High-Rise" stars Tom Hiddleston as a new tenant in a glamorous apartment building that houses pretty much anything you can think of, from homes to a grocery market, a spa, a recreation hall, etc. Similar to the train in "Snowpiercer," each floor of...

In what looks to be somewhat of a riff on text and iconography of the "Fast and Furious" franchise, the poster gets a disturbing punch to the gut as the reflection of a man jumping out of a high-rise window can be seen reflecting off the roof of a car. Wheatley's latest is based on J.G. Ballard’s 1975 sci-fi novel of the same name. Set in a luxurious apartment that houses anything you could think of (think of it like a building version of the train in "Snowpiercer"), the movie deals with the class warfare that breaks out after a series of power outages. Tagline: "Welcome to the high life..." Production on the surreal thriller High Rise has completed. From director Ben Wheatley (Kill List), the film is set in 1975. Here, a doctor goes about his soulless life, until his new apartment building begins to act strangely. Social norms are replaced by terror. And, the film has an A-list cast; Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller and Luke Evans star. And now, the film's first unsettling trailer is available here. The synopsis from Studiocanal paints a bizarre picture. Dr. Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston) does his best to be neighbourly, in his new residence. Soon, the lights go out and Laing begins to see the residents' real personalities. Drug and booze fueled, Laing must find his place in all of the insanity. High Rise is based on J.G. Ballard's novel. Originally published in 1975, the novel centers on a luxury apartment and all of its secrets. More...

Ballard's novel about the structure of a capitalistic society found within one high rise apartment building. Tom Hiddleston stars as the man who runs the whole thing. The cast includes Luke Evans, Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons, James Purefoy, Elisabeth Moss, and Keeley Hawes. We ran two strong reviews for this film from festivals earlier in the year, and I'm already looking forward to seeing it. This teaser has me even more intrigued. Love this introduction, and the alluring vibe of everything else. After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year, Ben Wheatley‘s adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s 1975 novel High-Rise was finally picked up by Magnolia Pictures for release via their niche distribution arm Magnet Releasing. And with that deal in place, we now have the first High-Rise trailer, which functions as both a teaser […]

Read More: Review: Ben Wheatley's 'High Rise' Stars Tom Hiddleston in a Demented Class War After earning some of the strongest reviews for a premiere out of the Toronto International Film Festival, and screening to similar positive buzz at the London Film Festival, Ben Wheatley's dark comedy-thriller "High-Rise" finally has a teaser trailer that takes the word "tease" very, very seriously. Instead of sharing any story developments or characters from the film, which is based on J.G. Ballard’s 1975 sci-fi novel and focuses on the class warfare that breaks out in a high-rise condo following a series of power outages, the teaser trailer simply introduces the many luxuries of the film's setting. Narrated with a menacing calm by Tom Hiddleston, the teaser introduces the 40-floor high-rise, created by esteemed architect Anthony Royal (Jeremy Irons), and all of its modern conveniences, from a fully-stocked supermarket to a gym,...

Ben Wheatley's adaptation of Jg Ballard's High Rise alternately confused and delighted audiences on the festival circuit with - in broad strokes - those who turned up looking forward to the new Tom Hiddleston / Luke Evans film left wondering what had just been done to them while the Wheatley / Ballard set, who knew what was about to be done to them, by and large left rather more appreciative of the experience. This is a dark and stylish and twisted descent into madness and with the film having freshly landed Us distribution the first trailer has arrived online for the UK release.Packaged as a sort of faux promotional video for the high rise complex itself the characters and at least tastes of the story...

British director Ben Wheatley ("Kill List," "A Field in England") is in talks to write and direct the latest remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot's stone cold 1953 action thriller classic "The Wages Of Fear" at Rumble Films and TF1.
The original film, an adaptation of George Arnaud's novel, kicks off when an Mexican oil well owned by an American company catches fire. The company hires four European men, down on their luck and desperate, to drive two trucks 300 miles cross country over treacherous dirt roads - trucks loaded with volatile nitroglycerine which is needed to extinguish the flames.
Filmmaker William Friedkin and actor Roy Scheider, hot off their successes with "The Exorcist" and "Jaws" respectively, teamed for a remake of the film entitled "Sorcerer" which shifted the action to the jungles of Amazon. Though a commercial disappointment, the film's reputation has grown over the years.
Wheatley's wife and frequent collaborator Amy Jump will co-write the project.

‘Nymphomaniac’ Star Stacy Martin Leads U.S. Trailer for ‘The Lady in the Car with Glasses and a Gun’
After leaving a big impression in both volumes of Lars von Trier‘s Nymphomaniac, we were hoping to soon see more from up-and-comer Stacy Martin. Before Brady Corbet’s The Childhood of a Leader and Ben Wheatley’s High Rise hit theaters, we’ll see her in The Lady in the Car with Glasses and a Gun, a ’70s-influenced thriller with more than a bit of style to spare. (That period influence isn’t only aesthetic: this film is the second adaptation of Sébastien Japrisot’s novel, which was previously brought to the screen in 1970.)
The true lead, however, is Freya Mavor, as will be showcased in this preview — and that’s also the most this preview will tell you. It’s almost exclusively a collection of stylish, “propulsive” shots — set to the antiquated sounds of Wendy Rene’s “After Laughter (Comes Tears)” — which one of the only available reviews confirms is a key component.

After taking a break between 2009 and 2012, Sienna Miller has quietly become one of the busiest actresses around over the course of the last few years. The British beauty was seen last year in Foxcatcher (2014) and opposite Bradley Cooper in the blockbuster hit American Sniper (also 2014), and has more than a few projects coming up: Burnt (which reunites her with Cooper), High Rise, Hippie Hippie Shake, The Lost City of Z (with Charlie Hunnam) and Ben Affleck’s Live By Night. The narrative for Ben Wheatley's adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s “High-Rise” is all over the place. Reviews from the Toronto International Film Festival were decidedly mixed (including ours), but the response from the more genre-friendly Fantastic Fest were much more favorable. As the film makes its premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, it appears to be receiving another uptick of positive reviews (see our man in London’s tweet below). And as Wheatley is the filmmaker behind genius genre films both horrifying and hilarious, like "Kill List" and "Sightseers," those of us who have yet to see the film are still hyper curious. Read More: Review: Ben Wheatley's 'High Rise' Starring Tom Hiddleston And More Here’s the BFI long-form synopsis: A savage and utterly brilliant satire of both 1960s social idealism and the Thatcherite values that undermined it, High-Rise opens with a dishevelled man (the ever-sublime Tom Hiddleston) eating.

When the 44th edition of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema announced their lineup two weeks ago, I wasn’t sure where to even begin when deciding what I should see. The festival which takes place in Montreal from October 7 to 18 is screening nearly 400 films and events in only 11 days. This includes 151 feature films and 203 short films from 68 countries – 49 world premieres, 38 North American premieres and 60 Canadian premieres. Because of it’s strong line-up, there is no possible way to see everything – so we decided to come up with a list of our ten most anticipated films — and trust me, it wasn’t easy. We will of course be covering the event once again this year, so be sure to revisit our site over the next few weeks. In the meantime, here is our 10 most anticipate films.

Meet some of the best directors working today, who haven't gone down the blockbuster movie route...
Ever find it a bit lame when the same big name directors get kicked around for every high profile project? Christopher Nolan, Jj Abrams, maybe the Russo Brothers? With so much focus on blockbuster films these days, getting a major franchise job seems like the main acknowledgement of success for a filmmaker. And yes, both the financial and creative rewards can be great. But there are plenty of other directors out there, doing their own thing, from art house auteurs to Dtv action specialists.
Here are 25 examples.
Lee Hardcastle
Even if you don’t know his name, you’ve probably seen Lee Hardcastle’s ultraviolent claymations shared on social media. He first started getting noticed for his two-minute remake of The Thing, starring the famous stop motion penguin Pingu. Far from just a cheap one-joke mash-up,...

At The Mountains Of Madness may have ultimately defeated Guillermo Del Toro, but Richard Stanley is not a man to avoid a challenge. The director of Hardware and Dust Devil is now attacking his own adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft story. He's set to direct The Colour Out Of Space for SpectreVision (the indie production company behind A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night).Stanley's aformentioned first two films in the 1990s immediately pegged him as a maverick talent to watch, but the debacle of The Island Of Doctor Moreau (recently the subject of the great documentary Lost Soul) sent him screaming into the wilderness, and he's only directed online series and documentaries since. His most recent work is the surreal The Otherworld, about his own experiences searching for a dimensional gateway in Montsegur. His name has often cropped up in connection to projects that have fallen through: he wrote...
