Australian horror film Psychosis aims to bring psychedelic, violent madness to Popcorn Frights Film Festival next month, and Bloody Disgusting has been provided with exclusive images and a clip that highlights the hyper-stylized feature.

Making a BBC documentary, Psychosis and Me, about his experience with his mental health struggles made him confront his lowest lows, actor and author David Harewood (Homeland, The Night Manager, Supergirl) told a TV industry gathering on Thursday. “It scared the shit out of me,” he told the Edinburgh TV Festival.

Asked about the overall experience of coming out about his mental health problems and sharing his experience in a doc, he said: “It was the toughest thing I have ever done.”

Recalling specifically going through documents featuring his comments from his time in a psychiatric hospital, Harewood said, “You are reading your disturbed self.”

After “a very difficult period,” he went through “a period of healing” and is now feeling comfortable discussing the topic, he shared.

Following the success of last year’s Cruel Britannia season, Horror Channel have announced another Brit-centric season, the Heritage Of Horror, which continues to showcase and celebrate British horror, past and present, at its finest – featuring two classics from the vaults and two brand new films, yet to be shown on UK television. I know I’ll be tuning in every Friday night – especially considering Horror Channel are showing one of my all-time favourite horror movies, the superb Blood on Satan’s Claw. The gorgeous Charisma Carpenter ('Psychosis', 'The Expendables') and the not so gorgeous Danny Trejo ('Machete') are both lined up to join the new SyFy original project 'Haunted High'. The movie, being helmed by 'Thirst' director Jeffery Lando, sounds like a Disney channel family-film but we're hoping for a bit more edge. Carpenter (below) will be playing 'the sexy librarian' and Trejo will be the school's Janitor and 'kick-butt guardian'. So all-in-all its already peeking my interest! M.C. The stunning Charisma Carpenter, most recently seen in 'Psychosis' and 'The Expendables' but better known for her long-running role as Cordelia Chase in both 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and its spin-off 'Angel', will twin up in 'Deadly Sibling Rivalry'. The new family revenge tale will star Miss Carpenter as both twins (hot!) in the Hanelle M. Culpepper ('Within') helmed thriller. It sounds like a dream scenario and we at least get two Charisma's for the price of one in the flick penned by Steve Peterson and John Murlowski. Based on “Dreamhouse,” one of the better segments of the 1983 anthology Screamtime, Reg Traviss’ Psychosis (now on DVD from Entertainment One) is an unsuccessful reimagining about a successful novelist, Susan Golden (Charisma Carpenter), escaping to a large mansion in the British countryside with smug boyfriend David (Paul Sculfor) to finish off her latest work. Too bad the home may, or may not, have a bloody past.

Uh oh. It's 1-11-11 release day. Is that good luck or bad? If your a movie fan, I've got sad news. It's bad. Because there ain't much hitting shelves this week.

First up we've got a little know Italian cult release from the folks at Cav Distribution called Alien from the Deep. I was going to lead with Piranah, but this 3rd rate flick's got such a cracking cover that I couldn't resist. Why do I feel like the movie won't live up to it?

Wienstein were smart and took advantage of the slow week to release Andre Aja's Piranha reboot. The outrageous boobs and gore flick is also available for 3D systems.

Byron Haskin's scifi classic, Robinson Crusoe on Mars is out on Criterion Blu-ray this week. I've got the DVD already and it's great. For a film as stunning to look at as this I may have to upgrade.

This past Halloween weekend FilmShaft was entrenched at the Grimm Up North Horror and Sci-Fi Festival in Manchester for three days of horror entertainment. It was a case of the good, the bad and the ugly. Isn’t it always?

The great thing about the programme was the variety. There was interpretations of horror from around the world. Although the Dancehouse has a certain faded and decayed opulence in an art deco kind of way, the sound wasn’t amazing and the screen wasn’t the best. But one images this is what it was like to watch a film in the days before the multiplex and Thx sound.

Below is a selection of what movies stood out and for various reasons.

The "Back to Black" singer, who is believed to be dating film director Reg Traviss despite recent reports suggesting he has been romancing his former flame, admitted while she isn't sure whether she's in love, she would die a "happy" woman if tomorrow were her last day.

"I don't know what you mean. I've got a very nice boyfriend. He's very good to me. I hardly know if I'm in love yet. We've only been together three and a half months," Amy told Harper's Bazaar magazine when asked whether she is happy with her life. "If I died tomorrow, I would be a happy girl."

Amy Winehouse achieved global fame by layering candid, contemporary lyricism over throwback, doo-wop sounds. Now she's putting those powerhouse vocals and her affinity for retro rhythms to use for her latest foray back into the spotlight.

The U.K. singer will contribute a track to Q: Soul Bossa Nostra, a tribute album celebrating the work of legendary producer and musician Quincy Jones. Winehouse has hooked up with British producer Mark Ronson, who crafted the infectious old-school groove of her sophomore release, Back to Black. For the new project, the duo revamped the playful, if pouty, "It's My Party," the 1963 Lesley Gore hit produced by Jones.

Though it was cool to hear her get work in The Expendables when the casting news hit last year, it was a bummer to see Buffy and Angel star Charisma Carpenter go from Wonder Woman rumors to some beefcake's girlfriend. But it looks like things might be looking up for the actress, who found fame with Joss Whedon and then piqued libidos as Kendall Casablancas in Veronica Mars. After playing a horror novelist who relocates to the UK and finds real horror in this year's British B movie Psychosis, Carpenter has nabbed the starring role in a new indie thriller called Crash Site.

Haunted Houses have been a feature of literature, film and folklore for decades, with 40 per cent of Brits believing in the phenomenon and a hit TV show, Most Haunted, exploring claims of paranormal activity.

On the big screen, some of the more memorable door-creaking chillers include The Haunting (1963 and 1999), The Legend of Hell House (1970), The Shining (1980), The Changeling (1980), House on Haunted Hill (1959 and 1999), The Amityville Horror (1979 and 2005), The Orphanage (2007) and Paranormal Activity (2007).

And just recently it was announced that Guillermo del Toro would write and produce The Haunted Mansion, based on Disney's theme park ride.

More often miss than hit; just occasionally a truly original, well-made horror movie can be found if you know where to look. The House of the Devil is one such movie, and even though I’d never heard of it before getting comfortable on the sofa, I was really glad I had by the time the credits rolled. I’d never heard of Psychosis either, but I’m always willing to try on a new horror outfit for size. It’s very rare that they fit of course, but as any shelf stacker at Blockbuster Video will testify, there are plenty more costumes in the closet. As TMZ first reported, Vivid Entertainment president Steve Hirsch offered Chapman a potentially lucrative deal to star in one of their adult films -- but according to a rep for Vivid, Anna just ain't down with getting down on film.

Psychosis Movie PosterE1 Entertainment has picked up the psychological thriller Psychosis for release in North America, possibly in 2010. The film is showing in the United Kingdom this week (July 16th) and the story runs a haunted house theme, while making one character, Sarah, look mentally unstable. Briefly, psychosis is a broad general term, in psychology, which is used to describe delusions, a split from reality, or trance-like states from religious phenomena, or caused intrapsychically. The source of character Sarah's distress will not be revealed until later this year; however, check out the new trailer for Psychosis below along with other details.

Winehouse, 26, has been dating the film director, 33, for the past couple of months and recently attended the London premiere of his new film ‘Psychosis’ in Leicester Square.

A source told UK newspaper the Daily Star: “Amy was really excited about her first red carpet event with her new man. She loved her new pink dress and had a manicure and pedicure to make sure she looked a million dollars. Reg was obviously bowled over as he couldn’t keep his hands off her. Amy entered the theatre looking radiant, however, she left with a massive love bite on her left boob.”

Reg Traviss’ retro shocker, Pyschosis, comes after Ti West’s superb The House of the Devil in March this year. It might be too early to suggest the horror genre is going through a full blown pastiche phase, but given these two films hark back in spirit to the 1970s and pay homage, perhaps more will follow.

Traviss shoots the film in muted colours and likes to bust out the slow zoom giving it a feeling of Hammer or Amicus-era flicks. The set up is takes its time in arriving to the big twist ending, which reverses the ‘it’s all a dream’ into something a bit more supernatural. Indeed, Psychosis is the kind of movie Lucio Fulci might have made early in his career and indeed the spirit of giallo is apparent as much as Hammer Studios.

Unlike The House of the Devil – which transcended its retro schtick – Psychosis often veers into troubled waters.
