Before I give my review of this, I'll have to say something that many people are thinking: The original 90s "prequel" Baki was a fun time, when Netflix came out with a sequel continuation of the series, it actually made people appreciate the original series more and respect Netflix for continuing the Baki storyline on screen, regardless if they watched the prequel series. Many would have liked to see another continuation or spin-off of this franchise but Netflix decided to do a "What If..." reboot instead of giving old and new viewers what they want. Netflix thinks that their quality of production makes up for their lack of insight. Stop coming out with new shows and reboots and focus on what people actually want. People would rather watch 5 shows that they like and are invested in than 500 1 season shows.
Whether you're a Baki fan or not, it's a decent watch and interesting time. Watch it and take it for what it is. It still has the spirit of Baki, just not the story of Baki. It's a distraction piece that no one asked for but they will still watch. I'd love to give this a 1 star, just to tell Netflix to stop coming out with new horse****, but it's a quick and easy watch while you do other things around the house because the story doesn't actually matter and standalone it's alright.
Oh, and never trust what people say when they use exclamation points online....

Great animation and awesome fight scenes. I love the style, and how the narrator will take you aside, going into detailed explanations of technique and style using all types of comparisons and analogies. The first half of season 2 is interesting, but ultimately ruins the whole series. The second half of season 2 is straight cheeks. The Ogre and Baki showdown is the worst of all the confrontations in the series, and is precluded by filler episodes where Baki and Ogre both engage in the most uncharacteristic behavior per everything we know about them. The finale will leave you extremely disappointed.
This iteration of Baki contains George Lucas levels of people standing around and talking. Where's the constant badass fights from the first run of the show? It's clear this was written by an entirely different and more boring team than before.
There were times I could barely make myself stay awake as everyone just keeps talking and talking. Some of the writing is ridiculously bad too. "He's not just pushing me back... HES PUSHING AMERICA BACK!" ?????????
As if we needed this show about ridiculously muscly dudes fighting each other to finally inform everyone that US capitalism is bad... Keep the simple minded politics out of my dumb epic fight show please.
Just a disappointment compared to the original BAKI show on netflix.
EDIT: Updated to 6 stars because season 2 was a major improvement, and the ending is actually super satisfying! Nice work on that!

Baki is still the best fighting anime. Yea it's different than the tournament parts and there are a couple political messages. But it's manga accurate.

Hello,
When i saw "baki the grappler(2001-2007)" series for the first time i was always excited to watch all it's coming shows. Its was fighting, martial art, exciting story and lot of fun to watch.
Now rest of baki is on netflix and all the series and season are less about fighting and more about history lessons. They are too slow, the fighting is of just 10seconds not more than that, and in between fight is again too much history lesson, which the whole series and damn boring to watch. Now in every episode i dont feel excitement rather i feel sleepy.
Very disappointed by the maker for making such exciting and fun anime series just boring boring and boring.

Somehow this series is still a continuation of the last one? But....still doesn't make sense but still holds true to the manga. And Netflix doesn't do a good job of making it make sense though... So I guess I gotta go read the damn manga to make sense of it all. ...sooooo yea, aside from all the anti-american stuff, it's alright.

I loved this series since I watched Baki on Netflix; then found my way to the previous products such as Bali: The Grappler. What I found was a rushed product was small inconsistencies in this new season that came to Netflix. Such as, calling the Colonel a captain in S02E01, and again in S02E10 calling Jack Hanma-Jack HAMMER. These are minor things but from the shows I keep trying to watch on Netflix it seems they are trying to run them out without editing. Some of us are fans of these shows and will notice.
Netflix is under attack naturally because they keep raising their prices, restricting accounts to make as much as they can. But this not the world of free spending, it's debt consuming. That is why so many people are leaving Netflix. What is the response from Netflix after all of that? Releasing half seasons; here lately it's been "Lincoln Lawyer" and "The Witcher".

This show seemed kinda rushed like they just wanted to get some hype, but cmon this thing is here since 2001 don't ruin this.
The first season basically had no really a point, they kinda tried to develop some side characters but they truly abandoned them. The grappler baki and baki are such better shows just because you can genuinely see that the people there actually wrote womething. I have a feeling like the writers of this series got that base and story, i guess they had a short period of time to finish that show, and these are the results. Netflix has this thing. They prefer a short time hype over an actual good series.

If I had wrote this review a year or so ago, this would be a 1-star review but after revisiting it on a fighting anime binge I have a new appreciation for the series.
This is not an anime you should take at face value; a few other reviewers mention its hyperbolical (read unserious) nature so it's worth repeating. It feels more like a satirical take on a fighting anime in which Baki, and by proximity his dad, acts more like a symbolic plot device than the story of a young man. I can't say that I dislike this format of storytelling although I do wish there was more fighting. The creators seem to be creating a more of mythical, philosophical interpretation rather than a direct reimagining of the source material.

The whole point of the show was characters performing ridiculous feats. The same way you don't complain when the characters in JOJO act unrealistically.
Secondly, it was obvious from the start that this series was never JUST about Baki. The previous seasons already made this clear. Plus it doesn't even matter how many fights were there as long as they are developed with proper build-up. And sorry to make you all butthurt but Baki does exactly that.
So what's next? Baki fights too much?

Pointless and boring. There's nothing more to say. Just in case I can save someone from wasting their time, I have 485 more characters to use to post this review. There is nothing to see here. Pick ANY other anime to watch. I promise it will be better than this. I made it to episode 10. The prison looks like a city in Attack on Titan, go watch that if you haven't. Great story. Canonbusters on Netflix was better than this. If this is all it takes to get a deal with Netflix, sign me up. I'm not saying I could do better but with 1 tenth of the budget, I'm sure I could hire someone ro do better lol.

For me personally, I love MMA based films/series so this was a complete masterpiece as it gives background to each fighting style used. It is easy to follow and has intriguing characters which make you slightly confused with who exactly it is you're rooting for. Great fight scenes. The only reason why it's not 10/10 in my books is that it sometimes drags on and the same fight can go up to 3 episodes long. Apart from that is is an incredible show to watch and I would definitely recommend.

The writer thinks he's writing hunter x hunter but the fights aren't even that sophisticated. The artist is also a bit overly fascinated with male anatomy and it's kind of awkward to watch. I'm also very confused with the connection to the previous series which left off in a contradictory place. The pacing is the absolute worst part, since the narrator will start raving about something stupid, obvious, or not that special, and you'll have to listen to a 10 minute repeated rant about natural order, honor, or made up bs about the human body, and that's pretty much the whole show. They also spend a ridiculous amount of time animating very short seasons, which is a little pointless since there's so little action.

Netflix Baki is only the continuation of Grappler Baki season 1 and 2. Most people haven't watched Grappler Baki and so they don't know the whole story of Baki. After watching Grappler Baki and the Netflix Baki, it all makes sense. This season didn't have much fights. But it was good. But the next season is going to be epic!!!!!!!

So many miserable reviews from people who haven't followed Baki from the start which would make it difficult to watch.
This is one of the best anime out there. You just need to start from baki the grappler, then baki and then this.

Not Only does this anime have good animation it also has some good fights it's a bad anime but it's so good you just can't stop watching and the newest season is peak fiction sure none of it makes since but that's what's makes it cool. You can't leave out all the good characters in it and sure it's not the best anime but it is still a good watch. It has different series and it gives some side characters plenty of screen time and it is just amazing. The Villains are also great but it is really addicting and doesn't want to make you stop watching. Also their are plenty of fights to enjoy it is cool.
