Such is the popularity of our favorite Texan, Matthew McConaughey, who, since the very start has taken fans on a mesmerizing ride, from being the ideal romantic lead to the ideal drama-intense star.

Later, Jack (Milligan) tells a neighbor, “I’ve never been on a date before. I need your help with Kathy.”
Ciccoritti helmed the Christmas movie from a script by Russell Hainline.

Heartstopper season 3 has finally arrived on Netflix, releasing eight brand-new episodes on Oct. 3. While fans are surely elated to be reunited with Nick and Charlie and all of their friends, the latest season tackles some of the heaviest and most mature subjects of the teen drama series yet.
As hinted by the second season, Charlie struggles with his mental health in the third season. These struggles come to a head in season 3 as both Nick and Tori worry about him and what he's going through. Elsewhere in the season, the teens begin to worry about their futures and where life will take them in university, their relationships, and beyond.
While the series digs deeper into the realities of being a teenager, Heartstopper maintains its happy-go-lucky and lovable quality that's so unmistakable. Part of that lovable qualities comes from the catchy and modern indie rock and pop soundtrack that will have...

Director Max Minghella wears his cinematic influences on his sleeves with sophomore feature effort Shell, a body horror dark comedy written by Jack Stanley (The Passenger).
Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man) finds herself embarking on a scary new beauty treatment as aging actor Samantha Lake. She quickly befriends Zoe Shannon (Kate Hudson), CEO of health & wellness company Shell. When their patients start to go missing, including starlet Chloe Benson (Kaia Gerber), Samantha realizes Shell may be protecting a monstrous secret.
The escapist love letter to ’90s cinema leans into dark comedy, but embraces everything from Paul Verhoeven to Soapdish, Species, and Sliver, if that’s any indicator of genre range here. Bloody Disgusting spoke with Minghella, who made his feature directorial debut with 2018’s Teen Spirit, about the genre-bender out of TIFF, where the film had its World Premiere.

The fall film festival season may still be kicking right along, but, with the conclusion of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival this past weekend, the film landscape for this season (and beyond) has come into clearer focus.
Big questions, however, remain: What films is everyone going to be talking about in one, two, six months? Who won big and might see even more awards glory come their way soon? Who was there? And how can film fans who couldn’t make it north for the lauded festival see the films we’re all buzzing about? We’ve got you covered, as we run through some of our favorite reviews, stories, and interviews from this year’s TIFF.

Shell is a film made with the intention of being a guilty pleasure. It wants to be the film one would encounter on cable in the middle of the day or late at night. Many films have become popular this way, especially before the days of streaming: scrappy little films with a campy sense of humor and talented cast getting to play around and stretch their acting muscles in ways that feel low-stakes for their career. Worst case scenario, the film becomes a curiosity — not good, but fascinating enough in its badness. And the best-case scenario is becoming one of those hidden gems that have a second life on home video.
That’s clearly what director Max Minghella is aiming for with Shell, a campy horror dark comedy about the unfairness of beauty standards in modern society. Six years after his directorial debut, Teen Spirit, Minghella is back at the...

Max Minghella’s “Shell” follows in the grand tradition of lurid comedies, like Robert Zemeckis’ “Death Becomes Her,” which satirizes societal pressures on women to look youthful and vital into the later stages of life. “Shell” is purposefully designed to be campy, silly, fun—mainstream entertainment with topical bite. And Minghella largely succeeds in his admittedly modest ambitions. It’s too bad he’s had his lunch eaten by Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” a film with an identical premise and analogous execution but a much higher profile.

Much like Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, director Max Minghella‘s Shell explores the hells of aging in Hollywood with vibrant style and biting wit. That both employ body horror, harken back to golden eras of the industry, and screened at TIFF will further draw inevitable comparisons. Yet they couldn’t be further removed in just about every way. While Shell centers around an aging actor who embarks on a risky beauty regimen in a desperate bid to retain relevancy, Minghella opts to use it as a vehicle to craft an escapist love letter to ’90s cinema.

It’s a shame for Max Minghella’s “Shell,” a broadly comedic body horror film about an actress who undergoes a strange treatment to cling to youth, that it’s coming out after Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance” made such a big, bold and bloody splash at Cannes. Not only will this largely less successful film inevitably live in the shadow of that far more audacious one, but it will likely be compared to it in a litany of ways that don’t do it any favors.
However, there is always a big tent for horror and just because each shares a similar premise doesn’t mean that they can’t find their own joy in their respective executions. This is especially true as there’s something uniquely silly about “Shell” near the end, but it takes quite a while to get there. Even with a more gleeful performance by Kate Hudson,...

In Shell, we meet Samantha Lake, an actress whose career is waning due to Hollywood’s emphasis on youth over talent. Hoping to stay relevant, she turns to renowned wellness entrepreneur Zoe Shannon and her company Shell. Their anti-aging treatments seem too good to be true—and surely enough, there are deeper forces at work beneath the glossy surface.
As Samantha delves further into Shell’s promises of rejuvenation, we start to see cracks in the flawless veneer. Strange side effects emerge, and not everything is as it seems. Minghella’s stylish direction and a stellar cast including Moss and Hudson keep the mystery intriguing. But does the story deliver on its unsettling hints? And what do we really discover about shadows lurking behind Tinseltown’s façade of beauty?

Shell is Max Minghella’s second feature film as a director. Dubbed a “dark comedy and body horror about society’s obsession with youth and good looks,” it stars none other than his The Handmaid’s Tale colleague Elisabeth Moss as a struggling actress opposite Kate Hudson as the CEO of a mysterious, and potentially monstrous, beauty company.
The ensemble cast also includes the likes of Kaia Gerber (Saturday Night, Palm Royale), Elizabeth Berkley (Showgirls, Saved by the Bell), Arian Moayed (Succession), and Este Haim (Licorice Pizza).
In an interview with THR‘s Georg Szalai ahead of the movie’s world premiere in the Special Presentations lineup of the Toronto Film Festival, Minghella discussed how different his experience on Shell was from his first film as a director, what inspired the tone of the movie, and why it has a lot of Look Who’s Talking.

Most audiences would recognize Max Minghella from his stellar turn in Hulu’s “Handmaid’s Tale” or “The Mindy Project” or any number of acting gigs in film and TV. But he’s also a writer/producer/director, and with “Shell,” he not only makes his sophomore directorial feature effort, he also reunites with “Tale” topliner Elisabeth Moss.
Moss stars as Samantha, an actor who was on a hit TV show when she was younger, but now, a little bit older, she loses out on roles she is perfect for to younger, fitter actors despite her talent. She’s vulnerable and her agents tell her to try the Shell clinic, which promises eternal youth and beauty. The treatment works and she is befriended by Shell founder Zoe (Kate Hudson). But weird, gross stuff starts to happen with Sam’s skin, people start disappearing and the authorities and thugs both start chasing Sam.

The Netflix anime series “Terminator Zero” brings the franchise back to the screen on August 29, and Netflix has shared a sneak peek look at the first six minutes today.
Showrunner Mattson Tomlin tells Tudum, “I realized the first minutes of the show have to declare what it is. The way to do that was to have a sequence that had no dialogue, that was really planting a flag in letting everybody know this is going to be violent, it’s going to be dark, it’s going to be action-driven, it’s going to be horrific, and it’s going to be arresting.”
The opening sequence begins in 2022 before jumping back to 1997. Watch below.
Ann Dowd (Hereditary), André Holland (“Castle Rock”) and Sonoya Mizuno (Civil War) recently joined the show’s voice cast, alongside Timothy Olyphant as the Terminator.
Rosario Dawson will voice Kokoro, “an advanced AI and Japan’s answer to Skynet.

Anime is not just about sunshine and rainbows, it is dark, it is gory and it can question existence as a whole. Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Paprika, and much other older anime are only proof that this darkness is not new. So mangas and other works that are now part of the dark shonen trio and more only had their paths paved because of the existence of these more foundational animes.

It is only because of these anime and mangas that others also came into being. Some even take direct inspiration from them. One such gem happens to be Psycho-Pass. The anime is as stimulating to the mind as any other. However, it has its own dark side, one that left no stone unturned in exploring the horrors of mankind.

Art print by Aleksander Walijewski for Poor Things. In the last roundup, from October, three out of the four most popular posters on my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram over the previous six months were posters for Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things (2023)—two teasers and an official-release poster, all by the great Vasilis Marmatakis—which at that time was still almost two months away from its US theatrical run. So it's no surprise that the most "liked" poster since then is also a poster for Poor Things, an art print by the young, prodigiously talented Polish artist-designer Aleksander Walijewski. What was a surprise, however, is that this poster has racked up more than 10,000 likes since early February, making it by far the most popular poster ever on my Instagram, doubling its nearest competitor (Marmatakis’s original Poor Things teaser). And, making it feel as if Movie Poster of the...
