After conquering the pop world for the better part of the 2024, Charli Xcx is set to transition into acting with a number of upcoming film roles, including Romain Gavras’ Sacrifice and Greg Araki’s I Want Your Sex. If there was any doubt that the UK singer has the acting chops, look no further than her debut turn as host on Saturday Night Live over the weekend, where she delivered a number of scene-stealing performances.
Among the highlights was a sequel to SNL’s recent viral sketch centering around heartthrob Domino (played by Marcello Hernandez) and his mistress Kelsey (Chloe Fineman). The original skit starred Ariana Grande as part of a group of bridesmaids recounting a bachelorette party set to the tune of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso.” In the sequel, Charli stepped in the place of Grande as celebrated Kelsey’s pregnancy by sharing the story of their “one last...

Inspired by a true story, The Girl with the Needle draws from one of the most heinous murder cases in Danish history. Mubi has unveiled an official trailer that introduces the grim tale, told in stunning Gothic style.
The Girl with the Needle releases in theaters on December 6, 2024.
The film “follows Karoline, a young factory worker, as she is struggling to survive in post WW1 Copenhagen. When she finds herself unemployed, abandoned and pregnant, she meets Dagmar (Trine Dyrholm), a charismatic woman running an underground adoption agency, helping mothers to find foster homes for their unwanted children. With nowhere else to turn, Karoline takes on the role of a wet nurse. A strong connection is formed between the two women, but Karoline’s world shatters when she stumbles upon the shocking truth behind her work.”
Magnus von Horn directs The Girl with the Needle from a script he co-wrote with Line Langebeck.

Today's first look at The Girl With The Needle, the official Danish entry for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards, gives absolutely nothing away but still manages to be bleak and weird and completely intriguing. Survivor 47 got off to a good start with last week’s premiere. It kept things simple, made a couple small but great changes, and showcased the potential of what will hopefully continue to be a strong cast. We even saw a player – Andy – have an epic meltdown and still manage to live to fight another day.
And the second episode delivered as well. If this is how Survivor 47 is going to go all season, we could be in for something special.

Denmark has selected Magnus von Horn’s The Girl With the Needle as its Oscar submission for the Best International Feature Film category.
Starring Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm, The Girl With the Needle riffs on one of Denmark’s most notorious murder cases to weave a poetic and dark fairytale about the people living on the margins in the aftermath of the First World War. Deadline’s review called the film “an unequivocal and beguiling triumph.”

Welcome to a new season of Survivor! And a new spot for my recaps! I’ve been recapping the long-running CBS reality juggernaut since season 35, Ghost Island, on my own site, News from the Couch. I’ve done other writing for FandomWire over the years, mostly movie reviews, and now I’m excited to bring my love of Survivor to a new audience!
I’ve been up and down on the new era, with no season cracking the top half of my season rankings. But I’m going into this new season with extra positivity, assume it’s going to be good until proven otherwise. And we’re off to a good start! This was simply a good, solid episode of Survivor. So, let’s get to it!

Survivor 47 premieres this week on CBS. The new season, which starts on Wednesday night, September 18, has an interesting cast and a few rule changes coming along the way. While promoting the new season, host Jeff Probst compared the reality television competition series to a popular fantasy epic series.
Here is why Probst says that the evolution of Survivor makes it feel like its own version of Game of Thrones.
Jeff Probst Compares Survivor To Game Of Thrones
Jeff Probst says that people who watch Survivor 47 this season will see how past seasons influence and impact it. According to Jeff Probst, the “moves and strategies employed in Survivor 46 will definitely impact Survivor 47.” Likely, he means that people who compete in this season watched past seasons and learned from other’s mistakes.

However, it also means that the rules and cast member choices evolve from one season to the next.

The Girl with the Needle draws from one of the most heinous murder cases in Danish history, yet director Magnus von Horn isn’t interested in retreading a familiar serial killer biopic ground. Telling a story inspired by Dagmar Overby presents fertile ground for horror, but Dagmar’s chosen victims were children and babies, making for murkier territory to traverse. Instead, von Horn smartly navigates the treacherous pitfalls of this serial killer tale with thoughtful empathy, framing the story from a broader perspective for a timely, gothic tale of hardship for society’s forgotten and discarded.

Don’t worry, everyone — Brat fall is coming. British bop-maker Charli Xcx has announced a new version of her widely popular album, out on Oct. 11.
“Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat,” the musician posted to her X account Thursday, confirming link-ups with Troye Sivan on Brat tune “Talk talk” and Lorde on “Girl, so confusing.” Billie Eilish will feature on “Guess,” Robyn and Yung Lean on “360” and Addison Rae on “Von dutch.”
The album will include a second disc with the original album and its three bonus tracks.

The relaxed pace of Filmmaker Lovell Holder’s drama You Say Hello allows his character to breathe and find their rhythm but without sacrificing any audience engagement and immersion. It’s a tricky line to ride, giving your narrative space without becoming self-indulgent but Holder does it with ease and that’s down to his intimate direction and Writer Daniel Talbott’s expertly crafted screenplay. The creative partners’ story follows a young, suicidal man who makes his way to his family’s beach house with the intention of ending his life but when he invites an escort over, his perspective starts to shift. It’s an honest, sincere film that Dn is delighted to be premiering online today accompanied by our discussion with Holder where he talks through the decision to shift Talbott’s original screenplay into a queer story, tonally drawing influence from Jean-Marc Vallée and Eliza Hittman, and...

Charli Xcx and Lorde have teamed up for a new remix of the Brat song, “Girl, so confusing.”
Reimagining the A. G. Cook-produced track as a duet, the new version of “Girl, so confusing” marks the first time Charli Xcx and Lorde have officially collaborated — a big moment, considering the murmurs that the original song was about Lorde.

Fans speculated that the lyrical allusions to another artist — like “People say we’re alike/ They say we’ve got the same hair” — were aimed at Lorde, partially in reference to a long-running in-joke among fans about mistaking Charli for her. Additionally, Charli recently commented on the culture of female celebrities and their relationships, and even revealed that she was “super jealous” of Lorde’s success after “Royals.”
On her verse of the remix Lorde details about how the collaboration came together:

As the longest running reality television series, “Survivor” has become a household name. Just think of the famous catchphrases. Who hasn’t said they wanted to vote an irritating person “off the island” or used “the tribe has spoken” at one punny point in their life? After three decades of filming, this year’s Season 46 is proving that changes to this season’s unique gameplay combining social, mental, and physical elements is the key to keeping the series exciting, highly discussable, and popular with viewers.
New aspects of the game introduced after the pandemic have earned the last five seasons the fan-dubbed moniker “New Era Survivor” for good reason. Instead of 39 days, “Survivor” is now played in a shorter and more intense 26 days. Forget those lavish days of “Survivor’s” past with building supplies, canned food and rice, and comfy hammocks. Contestants are no longer given any food to start,...

Mubi has swooped on its third 2024 Cannes competition title, Variety has learned.
Having acquired worldwide rights to Coralie Fargeat’s buzzy body horror “The Substance” and U.K. rights to Andrea Arnold’s Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski-starring ‘Bird’ before the festival began, the arthouse distributor, production banner and streamer has now picked up Magnus von Horn’s chilling black and white drama “The Girl With the Needle.” Mubi bought the title for North America, U.K./Ireland, Latin America, Germany/Austria, Italy, Turkey and India.
Directed by von Horn (“Sweat”) from a screenplay he wrote with Line Langebek, “The Girl With the Needle” is loosely based on the true story of Danish serial killer Dagmar Overbye, who helped impoverished women kill their unwanted children and was first sentenced to death in 1921, but it was later changed into a lifetime in prison.

Wild Diamond (2024) Agathe Riedinger
The first two days of competition screenings have whipped up a storm at the Cannes Film Festival. Things started normal enough with Agathe Riedinger's Wild Diamond, this year's only feature debut vying for the Palme. Reactions were a tad tepid, but the same can't be said about Magnus van Horn's Girl with the Needle, which has horrified some viewers. All hell broke loose on the second day of competition, when both Andrea Arnold's Bird and Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis had their world premieres. The British auteur earned general praise, though some found it confounding. As for the American master's long-awaited opus, opinions are so divided that a chasm seems to have broken open across the Croisette. Some say it's a catastrophe of epic proportions, while others see value in its epic mess. Whatever the case, it sounds like a fascinating watch,...

Loosely based on fact, Magnus van Horn’s fictionalised true crime nightmare leaves you with a shiver of pure fear
Just in case you were thinking that this is an upbeat story of a sweet young seamstress winning BBC TV’s The Great British Sewing Bee, the needle in question is in fact a knitting needle for giving yourself an abortion in a public bath-house in post-first world war Copenhagen. This film from Poland-based Swedish director Magnus van Horn – making his Cannes competition debut – is a macabre and hypnotic horror, a fictionalised true crime nightmare based on Denmark’s baby-killer case from 1921, shot in high-contrast expressionist monochrome and kept at an almost unbearable pitch of anxiety by Frederikke Hoffmeier’s nerve-abrading musical score.
I was unconvinced by Van Horn’s previous film, the social media satire Sweat, but this new one is horribly effective grand guignol, made with enormous technical flair,...

Like one of those fiendish knots that tighten the more you squirm, director Magnus von Horn’s Cannes competitor The Girl With the Needle builds to a devastating climax, taut as piano wire.
Danish actress Vic Carmen Sonne (Holiday, Godland) offers an understated but multi-layered performance as Karoline, a vulnerable but resilient seamstress living in post-World War I/early-1920s Copenhagen, who is left high and dry when her wealthy lover (Joachim Fjelstrup) gets her knocked up but won’t marry her. That leaves Karoline with only two options: give herself a bathtub abortion with a knitting needle or have the baby and hand it over to Dagmar (Trine Dyrholm), a sinister candy-store owner who runs a backstreet adoption agency.
Shot digitally, in black and white and using a claustrophobic 3:2 ratio by rising cinematographer Michal Dymek (A Real Pain, Eo), the film has the haunted, eerily still poise of antique photographs,...

In a pre-feminist age, Karoline is what entirely too many people would call a “fallen woman.” Alone, unemployed and pregnant by a man not her husband, she is acknowledged only to be punished, and invisible for all remaining purposes. Women like Karoline don’t fall of their own accord. They’re dropped, often from a great height, by a ruling patriarchy that doesn’t even care to watch them splatter. That involuntary descent, to not just a grimy gutter but a near-Hadean underworld of human cruelty, is the chief horror in “The Girl With the Needle,” Magnus von Horn’s extraordinary and upsetting film — an adult fairytale abundantly populated with witches and wretches, but where society is revealed as the true monster.
Von Horn’s previous feature “Sweat,” a selection for the scrapped 2020 edition of the Cannes Film Festival, offered a very different study of femininity bending over backwards to meet societal standards.

Magnus von Horn’s sophomore feature Sweat earned its director a spot in Cannes’ Official Selection in 2020, after his debut, The Here After, played in Directors’ Fortnight in 2015. But the festival of 2020 was canceled in the wake of the Covid pandemic, so von Horn’s place in this year’s Competition, with his third feature The Girl With the Needle, must surely mark the Swedish director’s coming-of-age. The film, starring Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm, riffs on one of Denmark’s most notorious murder cases to weave a poetic and dark fairytale about the people living on the margins in the aftermath of the First World War.
Dyrholm stars as Dagmar Overbye, the Danish serial killer convicted of murdering nine children — but suspected of many more deaths — between 1913 and 1920. One was her own; the others were handed to her by struggling mothers with babies born out of wedlock,...

When Liane (Malou Khebizi), the protagonist of Agathe Riedinger’s stylish debut feature Wild Diamond (Diamant Brut), says that she will be the French Kim Kardashian, it sounds more like a prophecy than a desire.
The 19-year-old waitress from Fréjus is obsessed with fame and beauty. She scrupulously saved her paychecks to get breast augmentation surgery. She had a friend inject hyaluronic acid into her lips to plump them. Now she has her sights set on getting a Bbl. Liane chronicles her body modifications on Instagram, where her thousands of followers leave adoring comments that she repurposes as daily affirmations. “I’m not like everyone else,” Liane says throughout the film to the skeptics and doubters.
Premiering in competition at Cannes, Wild Diamond is Riedinger’s compassionate contribution to the “perils-of-social-media-and-fame” genre. The film expands on themes first explored in the director’s 2017 short Waiting for Jupiter, which followed a young woman,...

In the past decade, Swedish-Polish filmmaker Magnus von Horn has become something of a fixture on the French Riviera, with his latest film, “The Girl With the Needle,” the director’s third feature to debut at the Cannes Film Festival and his first to compete for the Palme d’Or.
But the dark historical drama, which is set in post-wwi Copenhagen, marks a departure for the 40-year-old. Von Horn’s previous features — the 2015 Directors’ Fortnight breakout “The Here After” and his 2020 Cannes selection “Sweat” — are stories of loneliness and isolation spun from the fabric of contemporary life. The director’s first foray into period drama, “The Girl With the Needle” uses the past to tell a very modern story that centers on class, choice and the politics of women’s bodies.

In 2020, Magnus von Horn was excited to find that his film Sweat had been accepted into the Official Selection at Cannes, a big step up from his debut, The Here After, which made Directors’ Fortnight in 2015. The pandemic put an end to that, but his disappointment was short-lived; this year, his dark atmospheric follow-up, The Girl With the Needle, sees him joining the big league. “This is huge to me,” he beams. “The main competition!”

Nineties rock band Tool continues to rock in 2024.
The tour began last September, and after performing their last North American concert in February, they will be taking a break from the stage until May, when they head over to Germany to commence the European leg.
Joining them on the North American shows will be Elder, a progressive psychedelic rock band.
Frontman Maynard James Keenan made headlines last May for cross-dressing at the Welcome to Rockville festival in Daytona Beach, Florida. His decision to dress in drag created speculation that he did so to go against Gov. Ron Desantis‘ (R-Florida) anti-drag bill.
Keenan denied those rumors, however, and told The Messenger that he had “been cross-dressing since long before these clickbait-junkie dupes were out of diapers.”
“It’s pretty crazy the technology and the prosthetics nowadays, how they’ve come along, and I just was considering bringing the look back,” he said.

First clips of the stylised black-and-white chiller will be unveiled at the Works in Progress at Göteborg’s Nordic Film Market.

One of the most talked-about contestants from the “Survivor 45” season premiere was Emily Flippen of the Lulu tribe. The 28-year-old investment analyst from Maryland decided to audition for the CBS reality TV show because she got “really angry” when Mike Gabler won “Survivor 43.” Now it’s Emily who’s causing some fans’ blood to boil at home. The villainess made headlines in the first episode for the way she went after Bruce Perreault on Day 1, and for falsely accusing her tribe mates Kaleb Gebrewold and Sabiyah Broderick of lying about losing the “Sweat and Savvy” challenge.
The second episode, which airs Wednesday, October 4 on CBS, will focus more on Emily as she admits her game is “do or die right now.” Below, watch the “Survivor 45” preview video for “Brought a Bazooka to a Tea Party,” in which Emily decides to go on an idol hunt on Day 4.

Spoiler Alert: This recap contains spoilers from the Season 45 premiere of “Survivor.”
Every episode of “Survivor” contains a healthy handful of platitudes about how wild the game is, and the Season 45 premiere is no different. But when Jeff Probst says that he doesn’t know if he’s ever seen so much energy from a new cast, a shot of a contestant open-mouth sobbing before the first challenge has even begun makes it hard to disagree.
Among the first personalities to stand out are Jake, the lawyer-bartender-theater teacher dreaming of moving out of his grandmother’s house; Brandon, the tearful superfan who loves the game of “Survivor” more than anything; and Emily, who feels the opposite: “If I’m not gonna win the game, I would rather be the first person voted off. It’s a complete waste of time if you’re not the sole survivor. Excuse me for being honest.
