The twisted piece of art feels like classic Saw, previewing one of Jigsaw’s new traps. A man is wearing goggles with light tubes inserted into the eyes holes. It hurts just to look at it.

The rising popularity of overseas content is partially behind an expansion of diverse representation on film and television, according to the new Entertainment Diversity Progress Report released today by Luminate from the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas. (Luminate, the new name for the collection of data brands formerly known as Nielsen/MRC Data and Variety Business Intelligence, is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, the joint venture between Eldridge Industries and Penske Media Corporation that also owns The Hollywood Reporter.)
For feature and episodic content released in 2021 and 2022, Luminate (which published its last report in December 2021) analyzed the self-identification of race/ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation, and disability classification of main cast members, film directors and episodic series creators, counting both total number of projects that included people of historically excluded backgrounds as well as the number of roles.

Both Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith are back for this year’s Saw 10, currently scheduled for release on October 27, 2023, and we’ve learned that filming has now wrapped!

Greutert took to Twitter today to announce that filming has wrapped on what he lovingly calls Saw X, with a note that he hopes this title sticks.
Greutert stated, “I hope we can use the title ‘Saw X’ because this chapter really gets back to the roots of what makes Saw so special to me and everyone else who loves John Kramer’s saga.”
While plot details remain scarce at this time, the director’s tease of Kramer’s return in a “blood-spitting beast of a story” is intriguing. Perhaps the bigger question...

Netflix has taken peak TV to a new peak.
In a data point sure to fuel more quantity-versus-quality debate, Netflix broke its own record for number of original episodes released in a single quarter — with 1,026 in the third quarter of 2022, according to a tally by Wall Street firm MoffettNathanson.
That’s more than five times any other streaming rival: Amazon Prime Video and Hulu released 223 and 194 episodes, respectively, and Disney+ debuted 140 original episodes, per the report. HBO Max, now owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, released 114 episodes in the third quarter — significantly fewer episodes than usual and comprising the lightest slate for the service since Q2 2020, the second quarter after launch. Wbd has been paring back HBO Max’s content slate in recent months as it looks to cut costs.
All told, Netflix premiered 159 original and exclusive shows in Q3, topping its previous high-water mark of 143 in Q4 2021 (which totaled nearly...

A new month has arrived, which means a fresh batch of movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix. Most monumentally, the beginning of the month saw the conclusion of “Stranger Things 4,” which began back in May but is just now finishing up. (There’ll be one more season before the series winds down.) Other new Netflix original series this month include the horror-comedy “Boo, Bitch,” the fourth season of “Virgin River” and the fifth season of all-ages animated spin-off “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous” (which we’ve heard has some surprising connections to this summer’s blockbuster “Jurassic World: Dominion”).
On the Netflix original films side of things, the biggest new release is undoubtedly “The Gray Man.” A nonstop action extravaganza from Joe and Anthony Russo, the directing duo behind “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgmane,” it stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling as dueling spies. From the moment Netflix announced itself as an original programming player with House Of Cards, the streamer has been touting its great relationship with talent. That reputation has taken hit over the last week in the wake of Dave Chappelle’s controversial new special The Closer which has had top Netflix talent denounce the comedian’s comments about transgender people as well as Netflix’s support of Chappelle led by co-ceo Ted Sarandos.
Last week, Dear White People executive producer Jaclyn Moore said that she would no longer work with the streamer “as long as they continue to put out and profit from blatantly and dangerously transphobic content.”
Tonight, Emmy-winning comedian Hannah Gadsby, who was name-checked by Sarandos in his second internal memo defending Chappelle’s special, went further, eviscerating the top executive in a strongly worded, expletive-laden Instagram post. Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos sent a lengthy missive to the entire company following the mounting controversy around a new original special from comic Dave Chappelle.
After addressing top leadership in a Friday memo, Sarandos sent an email on Monday to all staff — some of whom have increasingly expressed outrage over jokes about the trans community in Chappelle’s “The Closer,” and have scheduled a walkout protest as a response.
“We know that a number of you have been left angry, disappointed and hurt by our decision to put Dave Chappelle’s latest special on Netflix,” Sarandos wrote in an email obtained by Variety.

Netflix is addressing complaints about Dave Chappelle‘s The Closer, the last in a string of stand-up specials that is being criticized for comments deemed “dangerously transphobic” by at least one member of the streaming service’s creative community. But one thing the service is not prepared to do is take down or alter Chappelle’s set.
Released on Oct. 5, the 72-minute special was promoted as the last in a “body of work” that also included 2017’s The Age of Spin, Deep In the Heart of Texas, Equanimity and The Bird Revelation, followed by 2019’s Sticks & Stones. During The Closer,...

Ana Celia Urquidi, CEO of Atenea Media, sat down with Carlos Quintanilla at Conecta Fiction to discuss the future of Spanish-language content. Quintanilla is the writer and creator of Netflix original “Control Z” and now serves as senior director of future original development at NBCUniversal Telemundo.
“The idea of the studio is to generate fiction for the different platforms. So we provide service to Peacock, we offer endlessly the content we generate – we have this very close relationship,” said Quintanilla. “And we create content for our own platform…but we also have a whole series of agreements with the other players in the market.”
Recently Telemundo announced the launch of their new division, NBCUniversal Telemundo Hispanic Streaming, which is set to provide 50 new projects to Peacock and other streaming platforms starting in 2022. Quintanilla is excited to be involved, saying “For me this is like the Disneyland of content because I can generate content,...

Manolo Caro’s cult series “The House of Flowers”(La Casa de las Flores), one of Netflix’s pioneering Mexican series breakouts, will get a movie spinoff, Netflix has revealed.
The title was announced as part of a peak into the streamer’s 2021 Mexican production-distribution slate, which formed the Mexican leg of a multi-territory Netflix Roadshow.
It also came just one day after Netflix confirmed in a letter to investors that Mexican mystery thriller “Who Killed Sara?” had become the U.S. streaming giant’s most popular non-English title ever in the U.S. in its first 28 days, racking up an estimated 55 million household account views.
Entitled “The House of Flowers: The Movie,” the spinoff from Caro’s now concluded three-season series has family maid and confidante Delia on her deathbed. She asks Paulina to find a “treasure” in the De La Mora family home. That confronts the three De...

Mexico’s Mauricio Ochmann is re-teaming with director Pitipol Ybarra for the Mexican remake of the 2018 German hit “25 Km/H” from Sony Pictures Intl. Prods. (Spip).
Ochmann and Ybarra previously collaborated on family drama “Ya Veremos,” which Pantelion/Lionsgate released in the U.S. on Labor Day weekend in 2018. Drama topped the specialty releases that weekend, grossing an estimated $1.8 million over the three-day holiday.
In “25 Km/H,” an estranged brother and sister reunite at their father’s funeral and make a spur of the moment decision to fulfill their childhood dream of driving across Mexico on their old motorbikes. The cross-country adventure allows them to mend their relationship and bring some renewed purpose to their lives.
“We honestly can’t believe our good fortune to be able to reteam Mauricio and Pitipol for this title,” said Laine Kline, head of Spip. “As a duo, they bring that rare quality that...

Once upon a time, Netflix was simply a streaming service, which means it bought movies and TV shows from other companies and passed them to its subscribers. Then, when the streamer started making enough money, it began to finance its own productions to make content that was – now and always – exclusively available on its own platform.
That business model stuck around for quite a while and made the streamer lots of extra cash. But then coronavirus hit and as the global health crisis put a stop to moviemaking around the world, Netflix slowly reverted back to its original form as a simple video on demand service. For now, at least. This week, then, not unlike the weeks before it, brings a few delayed originals, and a ton of newly-acquired syndicated content.
Probably the biggest show that arrived on the streamer this week was the latest season of The Flash. Following the success of Arrow,...

With the long weekend upon us, there’s a good chance you’ll be looking for some new shows or movies to watch, especially if you’ll be sheltering-in-place. Thankfully, there’s a lot of fresh content coming to all your favorite streaming platforms, so we thought we’d provide a bit of a rundown on what you can watch this Memorial Day weekend.
Over on Netflix, the biggest addition comes in the form of The Lovebirds, a new comedy starring Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae as a couple who have been wrongfully accused of committing a murder. While it released to somewhat mixed reception, it’s certainly scoring much higher than The Wrong Missy, while also proving to be equally as popular with Netflix subscribers.

For obvious reasons, this Memorial Day weekend is going to be a bit different from previous years. But the good news is, you won’t have to experience Fomo for skipping out on the barbeque-and-beach days in order to stay inside and watch TV instead. That decision has been made for you. There will even be some live sports to watch, like a Nascar race and a socially-distanced golf match between Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Peyton Manning. So allow us to list out the best options for what to watch (or stream) on TV (or your laptop) this weekend.

As the lockdown continues, Netflix provides a reliable source of entertainment, including many titles you might not have considered before. While it’s probably unavoidable that you’ll still spend a lot of time browsing through the platform’s library, Netflix’s weekly collection of new content at least gives us some pointers on what to watch next. To this end, here are some of the highlights of what’s coming to Netflix this week.
On the movie side, the Bryan Cranston-starring biopic Trumbo is available from Tuesday, May 19th. The Jay Roach-directed drama looks at the life of the blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, and his struggles against the communist witch-hunt in Hollywood during the 1950s. Cranston picked up a Best Actor nomination at the Oscars for his role in the 2015 film, which also features turns from Helen Mirren and Diane Lane.
