“Transformers One,” the animated reboot from Paramount/Hasbro and director Josh Cooley (“Toy Story 4”), leverages the format as never before with a brand new handmade look and an emphasis on emotional performance that helps us better connect with the robots. Also, transformations are key as homages to the original toys and the ’80s G1 cartoon series, with every piece of the robot having a corresponding place on the vehicle.
This plays into the origin story of Cybertron and the roots of its destruction by focusing on the friendship between lowly miners Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry). They eventually transform into the legendary Autobots Optimus Prime and Megatron, only to become bitter enemies divided by optimism and anger.
Ilm was tasked with the animation (only its third feature following “Ultraman: Rising” and the Oscar-winning “Rango”), overseen by VFX supervisor Frazer Churchill and animation supervisor Stephen King.

"Transformers One" is the best movie in the "Transformers" franchise since the 1986 original. Director Josh Cooley ("Toy Story 4") and co-writer Eric Pearson ("Thor Ragnarok" "Godzilla vs. Kong") are experienced in big dramatic stories set in established franchises that appeal to nostalgia but are more than just walks down memory lane; movies that tell big and bombastic stories without becoming empty spectacle.
"Transformers One" takes us back, way before Sam Witwicky, before Optimus Prime arrived on Earth, even longer before Cybertron was destroyed. This is a time before Autobots and Decepticons, when Transformers didn't even have the ability to transform, but instead lived underground after a war ravaged the surface of their planet. The film tells the origin story of Optimus Prime, at this time known as Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron, known back then as D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry). John Stevenson and Mike Osborne's 2008 film "Kung Fu Panda," on its most basic level, serves as a spoof of a certain type of martial arts film made in Hong Kong in the 1970s. Many of the tropes of martial arts cinema infiltrated American cinemas in the 1990s and 2000s thanks to the stateside releases of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong movies, the success of the wuxia film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and the constant bolstering of the genre by mega-fan Quentin Tarantino.
By 2008, so many American filmmakers had borrowed from Hong King cinema (including Tarantino himself with his "Kill Bill" movies), that even small children could recreate their tropes and clichés on the playground. Every kid could spot the characters: ancient wizened masters, a team of martial arts monks, and a feisty young comedic hotshot who seems ill-equipped for the asceticism of kung fu, but ultimately proves to be a champion.

Looking for something to scare your socks off? Here’s our picks of the best horror films on Disney Plus UK.
There’s something primal and exciting about experiencing real fear in a safe place, such as your sofa. That’s the beauty of horror films, but I think you’ll agree that it can be tricky finding a really good one. After all, fear is subjective and there’s a lot of less-than-great scary films out there, which is why we felt this list was a pretty important one.
If you feel like you’ve exhausted the libraries of other streaming services, Disney+ has a surprisingly wide range of horror films in its catalogue, and we’ve picked some excellent suggestions for you. We’ve got ghosts, cannibals, mutants, zombies and the occasional so-bad-it’s-actually-good film here. Enjoy!

Johnny Depp is continuing to plot his comeback to mainstream Hollywood following his defamation battle with Amber Heard. He returned to the big screen in the French-language period drama ‘Jeanne Du Barry,’ where he played King Louis Xv, produced and directed by Maïwen, who also starred in the movie as King Louis Xv’s lover.
This time, while we won’t be seeing his face, we will indeed be hearing his voice, even if we don’t understand all or half of what it’s saying.

For many, watching Johnny Depp movies has become a fraught experience. Once touted as a quirky character actor with matinée idol good looks, Depp became an alt-sweetheart of outsiders and Goths everywhere, frequently taking on "weirdo" roles. He worked with strange filmmakers like John Waters and, most often, Tim Burton, mostly to strip away the pressures of being a Hollywood pretty-boy, determined to prove himself as a performer who prefers the fringe.
He was also seen, for many years, as a Hollywood "bad boy," and he struggled with alcoholism and drug-fueled violent outbursts. In 1989, he was arrested in Vancouver for getting violent with a security guard. In 1994, he was arrested again for trashing a hotel room and had to pay over $9,000 in damages. He was arrested once more in 1999 for fighting with paparazzi. In 2012, Depp's security guards were sued by an Irvine medical professor for roughing her up and handcuffing her.

Johnny Depp continues to explore a path to a comeback since his 2022 defamation suit victory against ex-wife Amber Heard. Next up: playing a gibberish-speaking puffin.
No, it’s not a return to Pirates of the Caribbean, the franchise that made him one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. Nor does another spin in Captain Jack Sparrow’s hat look to be in the cards — despite producer Jerry Bruckheimer voicing a desire to reboot the series.
Depp, 61, did headline a 2023 feature — the period drama Jeanne du Barry, in which he played Louis Xv. It premiered at Cannes that year and was met with middling reviews.
Next, Depp returns to feature animation, a format that served him well in films like 2005’s Corpse Bride and 2011’s Rango. In Johnny Puff: Secret Mission, Depp plays a fedora-wearing puffin living in a town in the arctic who goes to battle with the evil Otto von Walrus.

While Ilm was completing the animation and VFX for Netflix‘s “Lost Ollie” (2022), the live-action/CG limited series about a floppy-eared toy trying to find its way back home, creator Shannon Tindle shared with them some of the manga- and anime-influenced artwork for his passion project with Netflix, “Ultraman: Rising” (currently streaming). His plan was to turn the Japanese pop culture phenomenon into an action-packed, heartwarming ode to parenthood and finding balance in life.
Tindle’s hope was to entice Ilm into doing the animation, even though the VFX powerhouse hadn’t made an animated feature since the Oscar-winning “Rango” (2011). Gathered in his Burbank office, Tindle showed off examples of Ultraman’s iconic red and silver look, fighting kaiju in Tokyo and bonding with his adopted 35-foot, fire-breathing baby kaiju girl.

Gore Verbinski’s delightful animated comedy western Rango is finally getting a (deep breath) 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release. Here’s what’s on the disc:
While it made a reasonable amount of money on its original release, the animated movie Rango also sat in a place where it was probably a little too odd for many youngsters, and needed word of mouth to lure in the older audience. Thankfully, it got a good chunk of that, and Rango also in the end earned Gore Verbinski (he of the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies) an Academy Award too. Not bad for a film that he basically started putting together in his garage.
The film is, er, 13 years old now, which feels like just the right time to give it a 4K outing. Rango will be making its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut this summer, and should, in fairness, look gorgeous.

The genre of Western movies can be considered the most serious one as its characters are almost always cold and tough as steel. However, what if we take a typical Wild West plot and make a comedy that will mock all the genre’s obvious tropes of it?
Such an attempt was made by Seth MacFarlane, who is famous for creating the Family Guy sitcom (since 1999) and two of Mark Wahlberg-starring Ted movies (2012 and 2015). Indeed, the filmmaker has the required comedy potential, so let’s learn about this movie.
The plot of MacFarlane’s Western flick centers on Albert Stark, a farmer who lives his calm life near the notorious Western frontier. After breaking up with his girlfriend, he loses all his temper but, luckily, is then helped by Anna, a brave female gunfighter.
Stark starts finding his inner courage under the woman’s surveillance, and it’s high time to show himself off,...

Netflix unveiled the trailer for “Ultraman: Rising” (premiering at Annecy June 12 and streaming June 14), the animated feature from first-time director Shannon Tindle, who re-imagines the legendary anime franchise from Tsuburaya Productions as an action-packed, heartwarming ode to parenthood.
With Tokyo under siege from rising kaiju attacks, Dodgers baseball superstar Ken Sato (Christopher Sean) reluctantly returns home to take on the mantle of rogue superhero Ultraman from his father (Gedde Watanabe) while signing with the Giants. But he has trouble balancing his passion for baseball and his family obligation to be Ultraman. Then, when forced to raise a 35-foot-tall, fire-breathing baby kaiju girl, Sato must confront his huge ego to protect her and Japan from destruction.

Sometimes the overall critical and commercial success doesn’t guarantee the movie’s cult classic status that would eventually cement it in the viewers’ memory, and the 2011 Western animated movie Rango is sadly one of the most striking examples.
Being a total hit upon its release back in the day, Rango was unfairly quick to fade from everyone’s list of favorites — and it may be due to some certain reasons that, in fact, make the movie even better.
Starring Johnny Depp as the voice actor for the main character, eccentric and ambitious chameleon Rango, Gore Verbinski’s film follows the same pet chameleon struggling with identity crisis. Being a sheltered family pet before, Rango strives for standing out in some way he has no idea about yet while his whole nature tells him to blend in with everything that surrounds him.

Gore Verbinski would seem to have hit a snag in his big-budget blockbuster career after his Lone Ranger movie for Disney became a notoriously bloated flop. However, he was able to return with a smaller directorial effort after that, with the suspense film A Cure for Wellness. It has been eight years since the release of A Cure for Wellness, and Verbinski returns from his hiatus to helm an action-adventure film with the humorous title Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. The movie sports an impressive cast, including Sam Rockwell, Michael Peña, Haley Lu Richardson, Zazie Beetz and Juno Temple. The film has just started production on location in South Africa.

Actors Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen were together for 14 years before their shocking divorce earlier in the year. But according to Fisher, their relationship wouldn’t have been a thing in the first place if it wasn’t for Cohen’s humor.

Cohen and Fisher may have gotten married in 2010, but they actually knew each other a lot longer than that. According to Cohen himself, the two met at a party in Australia around the year 2000. Cohen confided in a resurfaced interview with The New York Times that Fisher’s humor caught her attention.
“She was hilarious,” Cohen said. “We were at a very pretentious party, and me and her bonded over taking the mick out of the other people in the party. I knew instantly. I don’t know if she did.

After eight years, Gore Verbinski’s back with a thriller called Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. And it now has a cast, with Sam Rockwell, Michael Peña and Zazie Beetz among the large names.
It’s almost exactly eight years since director Gore Verbinski released a film – that being the 2016 horror, A Cure For Wellness. Now, though, the Pirates Of The Caribbean filmmaker appears to have gotten a new project together, with Deadline reporting that a cast has been announced for a genre mash-up called Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.
Among the major names you’ll find Sam Rockwell (most recently seen in Argylle), Haley Lu Richardson, Juno Temple, Zazie Beetz and Michael Peña.
According to Deadline’s plot summary, the film’s about a “man from the future” – who’ll be played by Rockwell – whose mission is to assemble a group of “disgruntled patrons” (played...

After directing the first three “Pirates of the Caribbean” films (2003–2007) and the animated movie “Rango” (2011), which won the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Animated Film, things have been relatively quiet for director Gore Verbinski. “The Lone Ranger” was an expensive disappointment at the box office, and the back-to-basic “A Cure for Wellness” was well-respected but kind of came and went.

Believe it or not, but it’s been nearly eight years since the release of Gore Verbinski’s last movie — the underrated A Cure for Wellness — but the director finally has a new project in the works. Deadline reports that Verbinski has assembled a fantastic ensemble of actors for his action-adventure movie titled Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.
Sam Rockwell, one of my all-time favourite actors, will be leading the cast, which includes Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus), Juno Temple (Fargo), Michael Peña (Ant-Man and the Wasp), and Zazie Beetz (Joker). Rockwell will star as a “man from the future” who arrives at a Los Angeles diner to recruit a “precise combination of disgruntled patrons to join him on a one-night-six-block quest to save the world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence.“

Exclusive: The EFM packages aren’t done just yet. A good one has come together late in the day as we can reveal that Pirates Of The Caribbean director and Oscar winner Gore Verbinski has pulled together a strong cast for his fun-sounding next movie, titled Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.
Leading the cast are Oscar winner Sam Rockwell, Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus), Michael Peña (The Martian), Emmy nominee Zazie Beetz (Joker), and BAFTA winner Juno Temple (Ted Lasso).
The project marks Verbinski’s return to directing after an eight-year absence.

Not surprisingly, our five leading contenders for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars also dominate the Annie Awards nominations announced on January 11. The predicted Oscar winner, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” reaped a lucky seven nominations. However, it is another likely Oscar contender, “Nimona,” that topped the nominations chart with nine bids.
All three of these films contend for Best Studio Animated Feature as does six-time nominee “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.” We expect another six-time nominee, “Elemental” to reap an Oscar bid for Best Animated Feature even though it was snubbed in the top race by the Annies. That category is filled out here by “Suzume,” which earned seven nominations in all.
The Best Independent Feature nominees are: “Ernest & Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia,” “Four Souls of Coyote,” “Robot Dreams,” “The Inventor” and “White Plastic Sky.”
These precursor prizes are presented by the Hollywood chapter of the International Animated Film Association.

Ultraman is back.
The character, created by Eiji Tsuburaya in 1966 with the “Ultra Q” and “Ultraman” television series, is back in a brand-new animated feature called “Ultraman Rising.” It’s due out next year but you can watch the trailer above.
In “Ultraman Rising,” baseball superstar Ken Sato, the new Ultraman, “quickly finds more than he bargained for as he’s forced to raise the offspring of his greatest foe,” according to the official synopsis. The trailer shows him battling a huge monster and then effectively adopting the monster’s child, which puts him at odds with his persona as creature-slaying titan. There’s a wonderful moment in the trailer where Ken shrinks down to his human size but the baby still towers above him.
The voice cast for the animated feature includes Christpher Sean, Gedde Watanabe, Tamlyn Tomita, Keone Young and Julia Harriman. Shannon Tindle, creator of Netflix’s fantastic “Lost Ollie,...

In late 2018, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” quietly debuted. It featured a different version of the Spider-Man character, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a New York City whiz kid whose Spider-Man died tragically, forcing him to step into the iconic role (with some help from some other Spider-People from different dimensions). And it was rendered in an aggressively comic book-y style – this style was unlike anything that audiences had seen before and effectively bumped out the parameters of what we think of as Western animation.
It took chances in both the medium and the message. It made an impressive $384 million worldwide against a budget of $90 million. And it was awarded an Oscar for Best Animated Feature a few months later, marking the first non-Disney or Pixar movie that had been honored since Gore Verbinski’s “Rango.”

“Justified: City Primeval” returns to FX this July, 13 years after the original hit series “Justified” ended its run. So is this a one-off, or would star Timothy Olyphant be up for more? “I’d show up. I had a good time. Every time we’ve done this I’ve had a good time,” he told the audience Thursday during Atx TV Festival’s opening night in Austin, Texas.
“Justified: City Primeval” made its world premiere Thursday during Atx TV Festival’s opening night in Austin, Texas. Cast members Olyphant, Boyd Holbrook, Adelaide Clemens, Vivian Olyphant were joined by executive producer Sarah Timberman.
“If he shows up I show up, we all show up,” Timberman added.
Not present, due to the writers strike, were writers/exec producers Dave Andron, Michael Dinner and Graham Yost. But non-writing exec producer Sarah Timberman read a prepared statement from the writers: “‘City Primeval’ was a work of love…...

Paramount will open Nickelodeon’s “Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem” not on Friday, August 6 but on Wednesday, August 4. It’ll still go head-to-head with Jason Statham and Wu Jing’s “The Meg 2: The Trench” opening that Friday. Moreover, it still won’t get any Imax or Plf screens even for those first two days since those auditoriums will be going to Chris Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” or (if circumstances justify it) Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” or Disney’s “The Haunted Mansion.” However, it’s the latest big theatrical release to opt for an extended Wed-Sun weekend instead of a conventional Fri-Sun debut.
Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” decided to open two days early and ended up with a $146 million Fri-Sun frame and a $204 million Wed-Sun debut. Does that mean the film might have nabbed the first $200 million animated opening weekend had it opted for a conventional Fri-Sun frame? Perhaps, since...

Every month brings a new slate of entertainment to streaming services everywhere, but each turn of the calendar also brings the tragic removal of a list of movies and television shows. While Netflix is debuting a bevy of releases in May 2023, the streaming service is losing some treasured titles. Good thing you have this guide to make sure you catch everything that may have been sitting in your Netflix queue before they mysteriously disappear.
Unfortunately, juggling distribution rights in the ongoing proliferation of streaming services makes it a headache to keep up with who owns what. HBO Max is the biggest offender of losing its own original content, as the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery and the induction of CEO David Zaslav has wiped a chunk of HBO Max exclusives from the platform. In case you forgot, “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” was a massive game changer in the world of animation and comic book movies. The film won Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards—being the first non-Disney/Pixar film to win the award since “Rango” (2011)— and with good reason. Technically, it was super innovative and transformative in its experimental animation techniques, and story-wise, well, it has heart, soul, thrills, spectacle, and humor.

While Netflix is still waiting for its first Best Picture win, the king of streaming is on the cusp of taking home a different Oscar: the one for Best Animated Feature.
“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” directed by the Oscar winner and Mark Gustafson, is a reimagining of Carlo Collodi’s classic tale about a wooden puppet who comes to life. Featuring the voices of Gregory Mann and David Bradley as Pinocchio and his father, the carpenter Geppetto, respectively, the film also includes a memorable turn from two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, nominated again this year for her work in “TÁR,” as the mistreated monkey Spazzatura.
The film received rave reviews when it premiered and is considered a visually stunning interpretation of the source material that leans into darker themes about life and death. It is a perfect example of how animation lends itself to more than just so-called movies for children.

March is a time for madness, whether it comes from basketball, Mercury retrograde, or a person’s home streaming habits. Netflix joins in on the chaos by updating its library with all three “Hangover” movies, a whole lot of workout content, “Magic Mike Xxl,” and much, much more.
On March 9, the streamer will premiere Part 2 of “You” Season 2, starring Penn Badgley, Charlotte Ritchie, and Ed Speleers. The five remaining episodes find Joe (Badgley) trapped in a volatile dance with London mayoral candidate and serial killer Rhys (Speleers), trying to prevent more murders but also not go down for the many he’s committed in the process. The trailer shows Joe and Kate (Ritchie) growing closer, more brushes with Kate’s wealthy socialite friends, and the return of Victoria Pedretti as Joe’s wife Love — or maybe the ghost of his wife, and of sins past.

Johnny Depp has kissed many co-stars on the big screen. Wedding Crashers alum Isla Fisher was almost added to the list of actors who’ve made out with the star. But Fisher would call off the scene due to health concerns, which was a decision she soon second-guessed.

As a leading man in Hollywood, Depp has made out with some of Hollywood’s biggest A-listers. But most of his co-stars have had nothing but good things to say about the actor’s kissing skills. According to Rte, Depp’s Public Enemies co-star Marion Cotillard supported Depp’s reputation as a good kisser.

At the publication of this interview, director Joel Crawford is likely on his way across the Atlantic to attend the 2023 BAFTA Awards. Crawford, a 17-year DreamWorks Animation veteran, is up for Best Animated Film for “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” A word of mouth wonder that surprised many not only critically, but at the box office.

The original “Shrek” franchise spin-off, 2011’s “Puss in Boots,” was directed by Chris Miller, was a hit in theaters ($555 million global) and lost the Best Animated Film Oscar in a very competitive race to Gore Verbinski’s “Rango.” A second installment seemed like a given and, like clockwork, the feline’s human voice, Antonio Banderas, was asked when Puss would return at least once or twice during whatever publicity tour he was enduring.

Not surprisingly, our five leading contenders for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars also top the Annie Awards nominations announced on January 17. Our predicted winner of that Oscar race, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” reaped a leading nine nominations here. “Turning Red” earned a luck seven, “Puss in Boot: The Last Wish” and “The Sea Beast” merited a half dozen mentions each and “Wendell & Wild” has three. All five number a nomination for Best Studio Animated Feature among their haul.
The Best Independent Feature nominees are: “Charlotte,” “Inu-Oh,” “Little Nicholas,” “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” and “My Father’s Dragon.”
These precursor prizes are presented by the Hollywood chapter of the International Animated Film Association. The ceremony is set for February 25.
Seven of the last 12 Annie Awards champs have previewed the Oscar winner: “Rango” (2012), “Frozen” (2014), “Inside Out” (2016), “Zootopia” (2017), “Coco” (2018), “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2019) and “Soul” (2021).

Taking home the Golden Globe for best animated feature film, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” just made Netflix the first streamer ever to win the category. Del Toro made history for himself, too, as the first Latino winner.
Accepting the Golden Globe, del Toro proclaimed that “animation is cinema,” continuing, “Animation is not a genre for kids, it’s a medium.”
Since the category’s inception in 2006, only four winners of the Globes’ animation category have failed to win at the Oscars: “Cars” (2006), “The Adventures of Tintin” (2011), “How to Train Your Dragon 2” (2014) and “Missing Link” (2019). They lost to fellow Globe-nominees “Happy Feet,” “Rango,” “Big Hero 6” and “Toy Story 4,” respectively. Steven Spielberg’s “Tintin” is the only film to win the Globe and not receive an Oscar nom.

HBO Max may (hopefully) be done randomly pulling original series from the service, but there are still a number of TV shows and films due to leave HBO Max in January as part of the regularly scheduled shuffling.
Multiple seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” will leave HBO Max on Jan. 3, so get those final binge-watches in Asap. And the beloved WB series “Everwood” is due to depart on Jan. 21 if you feel like seeing what young Chris Pratt was up to in the early 2000s.
In terms of movies leaving HBO Max, there are quite a lot. “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” turns into a ghost on Jan. 20, while Jon M. Chu’s delightful musical “In the Heights” leaves on Jan. 27.
Noteworthy films leaving HBO Max on Jan. 31 include the first three “John Wick” movies, the first three “Jurassic Park” films, the first two installments in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise,...
