The A24 horror film Heretic, from the writing and directing duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, received a wide theatrical release last week, and so far has made about $16 million at the global box office. The budget came in under $10 million, so it’s doing okay – and Beck and Woods have ideas for follow-up films that wouldn’t be direct sequels, but “spiritual sequels.”
Hugh Grant – whose credits include Notting Hill, Love Actually, Wonka, and Unfrosted – stars in Heretic, which has the following synopsis: Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Grant), becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse. Grant is joined in the cast of Heretic by Chloe East (The Fabelmans) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) as the missionaries. (You can watch our interviews with them Here.) Aaron Kaufman, the Emmy-nominated director behind Superpower, Sean Penn’s Paramount+ documentary about the Ukraine-Russia war, has died at the age of 51.
Deadline confirmed the news with Chad Verdi of Verdi Productions, who financed and executive produced some of Kaufman’s previous and upcoming projects, including Superpower. He died in Las Vegas of an apparent heart attack on Thursday.
Kaufman is perhaps best known for co-helming Superpower alongside Penn, and the effort translated into a News & Documentary Emmy nod in the Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary category. What began as an aim to track Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s rise from popular comedian-actor to a prominent political leader transitioned to a war doc in the aftermath of Russia’s campaign launched in 2022, when Kaufman was on the ground as a filmmaker.

General Hospital (Gh) spoilers reveal that after weeks of speculation and hinting via social media on Bryan Craig’s part, fans recently learned that the actor would be returning to the soap for one episode in August.
Now there’s more speculation on how exactly Morgan Corinthos will appear back on the show, whether that be through a dream, hallucination, or possibly a ghostly visit.
In the meantime, Bryan Craig recently provided fans with another project he is working on, over at Tubi.

Elizabeth Gillies is best known for her roles in the popular TV shows “Victorious” and “Dynasty.” Now, she’s making the jump to movies with her new film “Spread” which comes out this Friday on Tubi. Not only does Elizabeth star in it, but she also helped produce it—which was a first for her.
I had the chance to chat with Elizabeth about “Spread” and how this project was different than anything she’s done before. She told me she was totally burned out after wrapping up “Dynasty” so when she read the funny script for “Spread,” she was super interested right away. The story follows Ruby, an uptight journalist who ends up working at an adult magazine. Ruby goes through some big changes over the course of the movie—and so does her style of dressing!

For the better part of the last 15 years, Elizabeth Gillies has made a career out of playing sassy, snarky, strong-willed women on television. After rising to fame in her mid-teens as the mercurial Jade West on the hit Nickelodeon sitcom “Victorious,” Gillies made the transition to playing similarly rebellious adult characters, co-starring as Denis Leary’s daughter in his FX musical comedy “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll” and reimagining the role of Fallon Carrington in the CW’s modern-day reboot of “Dynasty.”
It was during the fifth and final season of “Dynasty” that Gillies was approached to star in and executive produce “Spread,” which premieres on July 19 on Tubi. Directed by Ellie Kanner and written by Buffy Charlet, the new film follows Ruby (Gillies), an aspiring (and very broke) journalist who is forced to swallow her pride and take a temp job at Spread, an outdated adult magazine.

"Spread's been around longer than you've been alive." Tubi has revealed an official trailer for Spread, a comedy that will be sent direct-to-streaming this summer. Not to be confused with the Ashton Kutcher indie comedy also called Spread from 2009 - these two films are entirely different. In this new Spread movie, an aspiring journalist who begrudgingly takes a job at an iconic adult magazine finds herself in an epic fight to save the company from bankruptcy. It's the world's largest adult magazine, and it might just change her life. Of course it will. This stars Elizabeth Gillies as Ruby, Harvey Keitel as Frank, Keith Walker, Diora Baird, David Allan Pearson, Teri Polo, Bryan Craig, Blake Harrison, and Diedrich Bader. This looks super cheesy and extra schmaltzy, definitely has the feel of a direct-to-tv release. Have a peek below. // Continue Reading ›...

We’ve been waiting months to find out whether or not Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy) has actually landed the role of James Bond – but in the meantime, he’s working on the race-against-the-clock thriller Fuze, which is currently filming in London and has Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie at the helm. We first heard of this project back in February, and since then Taylor-Johnson has been joined in the cast by Theo James (Divergent), Sam Worthington (Avatar), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Loki), Elham Ehsas (The Kite Runner), and Honor Swinton-Byrne (The Souvenir), and now Deadline reports that Saffron Hocking (Top Boy) has also been added to the cast.
Details on the characters being played by these cast members are being kept under wraps.

Mastermind Taylor Sheridan has worked with a lot of other master brains throughout his decades-spanning career, with genius filmmakers like David Mackenzie being one of them. This pair collaborated on the former’s critically commended masterpiece from 2016, Hell or High Water, which easily became a box office blockbuster at a $37 million worldwide gross with Mackenzie’s helming.

Needless to say, Mackenzie has also displayed his brilliant filmmaking chops in other pieces spread across various genres, like 2013’s critically acclaimed crime-thriller Starred Up, for one to count. However, when it comes to working on the superhero genre in particular, the director holds the harshest response even at the thought of directing a Marvel movie under Kevin Feige’s supervision.

"I think that we're being studied..." Oh yes this looks super creepy. A24 has unveiled the first official trailer for a horror movie called Heretic, the latest creation from the filmmaker duo known as Beck/Woods. Officially they are Scott Beck & Bryan Woods. A24 has this set to open in November this fall. When two Mormon missionaries attempt to convert a man, it turns out to be far more dangerous than they could have anticipated, as he traps them in a maze of some kind. Heretic stars Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East – that's it. Another unsettling, small scale, small budget, small cast, chilling horror movie that could just go on to be a big hit in theaters. I really dig the title reveal at the end. I'm sold! I've got to watch this and find out what's going on in his house. // Continue Reading ›...

65, the “Adam Driver vs. dinosaurs” movie from the writing and directing duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, didn’t have great success at the box office, but Beck and Woods aren’t letting that disappointment slow them down. They’re about to go into production on a new horror project called Heretic, which is set up at A24 – and The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Hugh Grant is in talks to star in the film!
Beck and Woods have written the script for the film. Details are scarce, but apparently the story has something to do with two missionaries that attempt to convert a dangerous man. There’s no word on who Grant would be playing this scenario, but it would be very cool to see him take on the role of the dangerous man. He has previously said that he finds villain roles to be “more fun” to play.

Anne Heche's tragic death following a car crash earlier this month left many with questions.
Now, we have some clarity.
The death of the Men in Trees star at 53 has officially been ruled an accident.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner released a report on Wednesday confirming as much.
Heche's cause of death is listed as inhalation and thermal injuries from a fiery car crash earlier this month.
What's more, the report states that it was an accident.
It says that Heche suffered a "sternal fracture due to blunt trauma" from the car crash.
Sternal fractures typically occur after the chest strikes the steering wheel in motor vehicle collisions.
Heche was behind the wheel of her Mini Cooper when she crashed into a home in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles.
The car and the home caught fire.
It was so severe that it took 59 firefighters over an hour to control.

US actress Anne Heche is dead but will remain on life support to allow for a possible organ donation, her representative has said. The 53-year-old had been in a coma for a week after crashing her car into a house in Los Angeles, reports the BBC.
“Today we lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul,” her family said in a statement on Friday.
Heche appeared in films including ‘Volcano’, ‘Donnie Brasco’ and the 1998 remake of ‘Psycho’.
The mother-of-two also appeared on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in 2020.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (Lafd), Heche’s vehicle “erupted in heavy fire”, which took 59 firefighters more than an hour to fully extinguish. The two-storey home she crashed into was left “uninhabitable”.
As well as suffering burns, the actress was left with “a severe anoxic brain injury”, when the brain is deprived of oxygen, the BBC quoted her family as saying.

Jeff Bridges has signed to star while Chris Pine and Ben Foster are in talks to join "Starred Up" and "Spread" director David Mackenzie's "Comancheria" for Sidney Kimmel and Film 44.
"Sons of Anarchy" actor Taylor Sheridan penned the script for the story about two brothers (Pine & Foster), one an ex-con and the other a divorced father of two, facing the foreclosure of their family’s West Texas farm.
They team for a bank-robbing spree that puts them on a collision course with a Texas Ranger (Bridges) determined to take them down.
Julie Yorn will produce and the film is being fast-tracked to start production in June.

Most of the movie biopics that figure prominently in awards season had their share of twists and turns, but none more than American Sniper, the film about Navy Seal Chris Kyle that Clint Eastwood directed for Warner Bros. Jason Hall, the writer since the film’s inception, explains how Sniper overcame more setbacks and tragedy than most films.
Deadline: You were an aspiring actor not that long ago. How did you become the sole writer of American Sniper?
Hall: I tried to be an actor, did TV parts in shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, played the bad guy or the MacGuffin bad guy with the half-baked mustache. I’d read these terrible movie scripts and couldn’t get auditions for them. I thought maybe I could write a terrible script for myself, but they wouldn’t even let me audition when I did that. Hold me. Thrill me. Kiss me. Kill me. The films of David Mackenzie envision life as a never-ending whirlwind of experience, a cyclone of emotion constantly spinning out of control. These feelings are heightened and externalized through melodrama, yet they can also simmer under the surface like hidden secrets waiting to explode. While his exhausted characters never fit into one social class – pop stars, artisan chefs and thuggish bruisers all take center stage – each sees the world in a similarly warped way. They are confused by inadequacy, defined by repression, purposefully solitary, and bordering on self-destruction. But most importantly they are also eager to transcend this unhappiness, especially after finding inspiration in another equally tormented individual. One must simply desire the opportunity to grow, to live, to survive.

"You need to experience the dynamite... to know that the dynamite can go off." Just last week we featured Starred Up as our latest Monthly Must See, an intense, brutal but incredible prison movie from English director David Mackenzie starring Jack O'Connell and Ben Mendelsohn. You may not recognize the name at first, but you should certainly recognize his films - David Mackenzie's filmography includes Young Adam, Asylum, Hallam Foe (or Mister Foe in the Us), Spread with Ashton Kutcher, the sci-fi Perfect Sense and the music film Tonight You're Mine, all before he went on to make Starred Up. Last week I sat down for a chat with David on the realism of the film and finding actor Jack O'Connell, who plays inmate Eric Love. As a big fan of Starred Up, I was anxious to get a chance to sit down with Mackenzie and drill him on...

With Starred Up, David Mackenzie has crafted an instant classic not just of the prison sub-genre, but one of the best dramas of the year so far. As his eight feature, the movie treads new ground for a talent whose last high-profile movie was the Ewan McGregor-starring Perfect Sense, but showcasing astonishing performances from Jack O’Connell, Ben Mendelsohn and Rupert Friend – and proving he can bring out the beauty in the brutality – it’s also his greatest work so far. HeyUGuys had a chat with him about it.
Were you always interested in making a prison-set film? Or was it Jonathan Asser’s screenplay that drew you in?
It’s a hard one; you choose a project on the basis of a number of reasons. All the things that come across your path are a major reason, you know. I definitely think I was interested in trying to make a movie that was,...

Attack the Block director Joe Cornish is set to direct a spy movie called Section 6 for Universal Pictures. This will be the writer-driector's second film. The movie will tell the origin story of the formation of Great Britain's secret intelligence agency, Military Intelligence, Section 6, also known as MI6. Earlier this year British actor Jack O'Connell (300: Rise of An Empire) was attached to star in the project.
Directors David MacKenzie (Spread) and Tom Hooper (Les Miserables) were up for the directing gig as well, but Cornish beat them out. The guy did an awesome job with Attack the Block. I've been looking forward to seeing what he would do next, and I think this will be a great project for him to take on. He recently worked on the Ant-Man script with Edgar Wright.

"This is how young offenders turn out..." Film4 has debuted the first official UK trailer for Starred Up, one of my favorite festival films of 2013. It's a prison drama about a father and son in the UK's hardcore penal system and it's awesome, with touches of Bronson, A Prophet and Short Term 12. Above all it features a phenomenal lead performances by young actor Jack O'Connell (seen above) and Ben Mendelsohn, both of whom get plenty of time in the footage shown here. This trailer is actually pretty damn good, building up the intensity perfectly to the end. Hopefully this convinces a lot of people to see it. Take a look! We're very happy to report some news regarding one of our favorite break out indie films that premiered at the fall film festivals this year. The film is called Starred Up, the latest from acclaimed English director David Mackenzie (of Asylum, Mister Foe, Spread, Perfect Sense previously), an intense/hardcore prison drama set in the UK. I raved about it after first seeing it at the Telluride Film Festival and it went on to play in Toronto and London to more rave reviews. After months of waiting, Tribeca Film has finally announced that they've acquired the indie for Us release in spring of 2014. Mark this one down as must see right now. "The captivating authenticity that David Mackenzie depicts in Starred Up is driven by a brilliant breakout performance by its young lead Jack O’Connell," said Tribeca Film Chief Creative Officer Geoff Gilmore. It's a pretty good time to be screenwriter Jason Hall. While his first produced script was "Spread," that movie starring Ashton Kutcher, he has quickly moved onto much bigger and much better things. His script for "American Sniper" has none other than Steven Spielberg attached to direct, with Bradley Cooper to star, while Spielberg is also going to be looking at Hall's adaptation of David Finkel's forthcoming book "Thank You For Your Service" as possible reteam material with Daniel Day-Lewis. Now Hall has another screenplay that is spurring the interest of more A-list talent. Warner Bros. has snapped up Hall's pitch for "Rasputin," with Leonardo DiCaprio to produce and star. The famed Russian mystic was also a wildly controversial person, who seemed to gain more enemies as prominence grew. Known equally for his supposed powers as his sexual proclivities and other unorthodox behaviors, he was assassinated at the age...

Exclusive: Jason Hall was marked an A-list screenwriter the moment DreamWorks and Warner Bros joined forces after Steven Spielberg agreed to direct Bradley Cooper in American Sniper, based on the life of Navy Seal Chris Kyle. Not surprisingly, both studios want more from Hall. Warner Bros has just closed a blind script deal with him, and I’ve learned that DreamWorks is in early talks to have Hall adapt the upcoming David Finkel book Thank You For Your Service, about the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder syndrome that is becoming a major issue for vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s something Spielberg likes as a potential project down the line, though that is all early days. I sought out Hall because I find it instructive to see how a guy with one screen credit (2009′s Spread) and another coming (an adaption of the Joseph Finder novel Paranoia) gets white-hot so quickly.

Steven Spielberg has decided that his next directing project will be a big screen adaptation of "American Sniper," an autobiography of Navy Seal Chris Kyle (pictured). The project is set up at Warner Bros and has Bradley Cooper attached to star and produce. The book reveals how Kyle came to record the highest number of sniper kills for an American. The book has been praised for its frankness in telling a first-person account of a warrior who shoots from far and close distances. Kyle tragically was killed at a shooting range by a fellow vet in February. Jason Hall (Spread) wrote the script. The plan is to begin filming in the beginning of 2014.
