Kingston Rumi Southwick & Banks Repeta To Topline Horror Thriller ‘Henry’s Ebb’ From Thomas Mendolia
Exclusive: Kingston Rumi Southwick (Presumed Innocent) and Banks Repeta (Armageddon Time) will topline Henry’s Ebb, an indie horror thriller marking the feature debut of writer-director Thomas Mendolia.
Others starring in the film, which recently wrapped production in North Carolina, include Ashley Shelton (War Pony), Will Holland, Rebecca Ann Koon (The Menu) and Austin Willard.
Described as a southeastern-set story in the vein of Stand By Me or Mud, with genre elements, Henry’s Ebb follows Henry (Southwick) as he runs away from an abusive home with his imaginary best friend, Ebb (Repeta). The journey tests their friendship, as well as Henry’s inner “need” for Ebb as Ebb’s control and manipulation over Henry intensifies.
Lucas Ford and Joey LePage are serving as the film’s producers, with Ford Films as the production company. Tracy Kilpatrick (The Peanut Butter Falcon) oversaw casting.

Two highly-anticipated comedy series are hitting streaming platforms this week, the excruciatingly relatable "Beef" on Netflix and the musical prequel series, "Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies" on Paramount+. Meanwhile, there are films like "The Drop" and "Mayhem" available to stream that might help viewers get ready for a series like "Beef." Both flicks are exclusive to their prospective streaming platforms, so hopefully you've got Hulu and Shudder in addition to Netflix. There's also the Netflix series "Julie and the Phantoms" and the oft-forgotten "Grease 2" on Paramount+ to serve as the perfect companion pieces to "Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies." Last-up, there's also the Prime Video series "Paper Girls" which manages to capture the girl-power energy of the new prequel series while boasting a stand-out performance by one of the stars of "Beef."

Providing ample opportunities to showcase the beauties and horrors of the human body, ballet and dance is frequently examined in cinema because of its elaborate artistic and metaphoric potential. Such is the case with Sarah Adina Smith’s “Birds of Paradise,” a sensuous drama filled to the brim with visually distinctive, and grandiose displays of technique and physical rigor. The film follows American ballet students Kate (Diana Silvers) and Marine (Kristine Froseth), both of whom are competing for the top prize in an elite student ballet competition which captures the winner a contract with the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet Company.

The surreal film, based on the book Bright Burning Stars, paints a too-chilly portrait of an erotic, competitive friendship between two ballerinas
Two beautiful, lithe, painfully thin dancers compete for a coveted spot in a ruthless ballet program, come together and apart as two halves of a whole amid drugs, hallucinations and sex until one breaks. You’d be right in thinking this sounds like the plot to Black Swan, the 2010 psychological drama from film-maker Darren Aronofsky that earned Natalie Portman a best actress Oscar. (Mila Kunis played her rival/love interest/colleague/friend.) It’s also essentially the arch of Birds of Paradise, a surreal ballerina drama released on Amazon this week, which flies awfully close to its critically acclaimed predecessor (down to the avian-themed title) and pales in comparison.

If close female friendships were a dance, they could well be ballet: intimate, harmonious, demanding and — when friends mean everything in one’s formative years — brutally high-stakes.
In “Birds of Paradise,” writer-director Sarah Adina Smith (“Legion”) tells a scrumptious and entertaining tale about the go-for-broke nature of youthful companionship, spinning a cunning yarn of female enmity and camaraderie set against the backdrop of Paris’ ultra-competitive professional ballet scene. Her source is A.K. Small’s “Bright Burning Stars,” a bestselling young-adult novel Smith adapts with grown-up panache, without shortchanging the girly pleasures of the genre while upgrading them with a healthy dose of fiery twists and genuinely mature sensuality seldom associated with YA.
In the dimly-lit and sensory ecosystem that Smith creates, every out-of-place move in friendship and art comes at a high cost to sisterly dancers studying at a prestigious ballet school. Smith has fun with this setting’s prickly and double-edged dynamics,...

It would be easy — and not especially inaccurate — to dismiss “Birds of Paradise” as a YA riff on “Black Swan,” but . Besides, the movie owes just as much to Luca Guadagnino’s recent “Suspiria” remake — if not for its supernatural menace, then at least for its witchy mood. Directed by Sarah Adina Smith (“Buster’s Mal Heart”), she brings texture to a conventional story about ultra-competitive teenage girls, turning it into something more like a crucible for the survival of their very souls.
Okay, so most YA adaptations are super derivative, but at least this one has style. And a real sense of danger. And Jacqueline Bisset as a French dance instructor who refers to her students as “rats,” and lets them call her “le Diable” in return.

Broadcasting associations across Europe have condemned a bill recently passed by Hungary, saying that it openly discriminates against LGBTQ communities.
The Hungarian national acts on media services and mass media and advertising were amended to reflect the bill’s directive, prompting criticism from the associations, which claim the changes contravene fundamental rights enshrined in articles 7, 9, 11, 16 and 21 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (Cfr) “by way of seeking to ban or limit exposure to Lgbtiq communities and issues in programming and advertising content.”
“The bill depicts the promotion and representation of ‘deviation from identity corresponding to the gender assigned at birth, gender reassignment and homosexuality’ as harmful to minors. We do not agree with this interpretation,” the associations note in a joint statement.
The groups say that, in protecting minors, the measures need to be proportionate to the potential harm of the content,...

Hungary’s parliament passed a law on Tuesday that bans the dissemination to minors of content deemed to promote homosexuality and gender change — a move that has drawn condemnation from leading broadcasters and cast a shadow over one of the world’s top production hubs.

So far on “The Masked Dancer,” three of the judges have correctly guessed the identities of some of the costumed dancers. Ken Jeong named Bill Nye as Ice Cube, Brian Austin Green predicted Elizabeth Smart as Moth and Paula Abdul went with Brian McKnight as Cricket. That leaves Ashley Tisdale as the only “Tmd” panelist to not throw out a correct guess … yet. Of course, there are still five masked twirlers in the competition, so Ashley has a chance to get on the board with a point before the winner is ultimately crowned. Sony’s “The Nightingale,” starring Dakota and Elle Fanning, and an adaptation of Robert Jordan’s “The Wheel of Time” fantasy series, produced by Sony and Amazon Studios, and starring Rosamund Pike, are the latest projects to be hit by the growing spread of coronavirus, with both productions’ European shoots disrupted this week.

Golden Globes winner Jacqueline Bisset (Dancing on the Edge) has joined the cast of Birds of Paradise from Amazon Studios and Anonymous Content. Sarah Adina Smith wrote and is directing the film, which is based on the novel, Bright Burning Stars, by A.K. Small. The pic, starring Kristine Froseth and Diana Silvers, is set at a prestigious ballet school in Paris, where the new girl (Silvers) befriends a grieving dance prodigy (Froseth) as the dancers compete for the school’s ultimate prize: to receive a contract to join the Parisian Opera’s ballet company. As the pressure mounts and the girls are pushed to their physical and emotional limits, their bond is tested and they’re forced to ask themselves just how far they are willing to go to win. Anonymous’ Trevor Adley and Dara Gordon and Everything is Everything’s Jonako Donley are producing the film, which is currently shooting in Budapest.
