Saoirse Ronan started in the industry at a pretty young age and immediately won the hearts of the masses. After dedicating so much of her life to movies and her fans, she is now 30, flirty and thriving, and just wants to relax a bit.

Recently married, she wanted to enjoy a sort of semi-retirement or vacation one might say. The only thing that would pull her out of this break? An offer from Steve McQueen. And so it did!
Saoirse Ronan Almost Went on a Semi-Retirement if Not for Steve McQueen
Saoirse Ronan was knee-deep in a whirlwind schedule in 2022, juggling a three-month shoot in Australia for Garth Davis’ Foe and a six-month stretch on The Outrun lined up right after. With a workload like that, she joked that unless Steve McQueen himself came calling,...

Nora Fingscheidt’s The Outrun is a screen adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s memoir which recounts the horrors of alcoholism in the same breath as it recounts the tonic powers of nature in beating that same evil. We are met with Rona, a young biology student, who is figuring out her life sans alcohol and in solitude. To mend her London-bred ills, Rona alights on her native place, Orkney Island, to explore the swathes of natural history and in doing so touch the open-ended strings of her personal life.
The fluid flow of time and space helps to render the film the texture of a memoir which interrelates and interfuses the protagonist’s previous life as an alcoholic and current life as a conservationist. In doing so, the personal memoir of the protagonist dances on a tightrope over an area that also makes enough space for a nature documentary.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we tackle Best Actress, where Demi Moore’s odds have been steadily rising.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Nothing major happened this week but we’re still dutifully typing anyway. By the power of fate or maybe the calendar, the rotation has us back to Best Actress this week — perhaps apropos based on *waves hands* all this. When we last put fingers to keys about the Best Actress race, I was apparently on a bender: I didn’t have Angelina Jolie or Marianne Jean-Baptiste represented in my predictions, but I was all aboard for Amy Adams and Saoirse Ronan to make the final cut. I can only be me, but even reading that back makes my eyes roll. Needless to say,...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
A Different Man (Aaron Schimberg)
There are a lot of ways A Different Man could go and a lot of things it could be. Aaron Schimberg’s uniquely uncomfortable, uncomfortably unique feature sometimes plays as a reverse-Frankenstein medical horror, a tragic life-imitates-art satire, and a spiraling relationship drama. To its ambitious and distinct credit, it attempts packaging them all into ominous-sounding harmony, as if Charlie Kauffman’s surrealist Escher concoctions became a Twilight Zone episode modeled after David Lynch’s Elephant Man or Beauty and the Beast. It’s a dark, hilarious, and deeply unsettling portrait of a disfigured man that’s also an unflinching mirror of a looks-focused industry. – Jake K. (full review)

A note from Scott: Well, it’s been a week. The presidential election did not break the way that most members of the American and global filmmaking communities would have preferred, which — low on the overall list of things to be thinking about but relevant to what we cover here — may well jolt the mood and priorities of Academy members as they contemplate what to support this season. We’ll have more on that soon.

It’s been a gradual climb for Marianne Jean-Baptiste in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Actress, but it has paid off. The star of Mike Leigh‘s latest film, “Hard Truths,” now ranks among the top five likely nominees according to the combined predictions of thousands of our users. As of this writing she’s tied with Saoirse Ronan (“The Outrun”) at 11/1 odds.
Two months ago, on September 6, Jean-Baptiste was down in ninth place with 30/1 odds in the Best Actress race. A month later, on October 6, she was up to seventh place with 16/1 odds. Now she has finally cracked the top five with 17 Expert journalists predicting her nomination and one, Tariq Khan (Gold Derby), betting on her to win. This would be her second career nomination, following her Best Supporting Actress bid for Leigh’s lauded “Secrets and Lies” (1996). She would be Leigh’s third leading lady to be recognized by the academy.

2024’s The Outrun is this year’s great performance of a recovering alcoholic that inevitably deserves an Oscar nomination. Saoirse Ronan’s The Outrun tells the story of Rona, a 29-year-old alcoholic on her road to recovery after some terrible events traumatizing her for life. The non-chronological film might occasionally be a bit hard to take in, but at the end of the day, it’s a beautiful tale of hope and growth. To understand Rona’s experiences, the best way to understand her mind would be to go about the film as chronologically as possible. It’s the hair color that you’ve got to pay attention to. Rona grew up on a small, isolated island in Orkney, Scotland. A farm girl by birth, Rona’s an intelligent woman who easily grasps information. Her life begins to sparkle after she becomes addicted to alcohol and has outbursts while studying biology in London,...

Whilst the eyes of the world may be locked firmly on the other side of the Atlantic this morning, back here in Blighty there is at least some positivity still to be shared yet. Having shone last year when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes brought Hollywood to a standstill, the independent British cinema scene has continued to shine throughout 2024, with revered greats, rising stars, returning masters, and bold new narratives all emerging to ensure the flame for indies from these shores has never burned brighter. As such, it comes as no great surprise that the announcement of this year's British Independent Film Awards nominees is a veritable treasure trove of great art and great artists that stand to represent the very best British filmmaking has to offer.

In a fascinating turn of events, the official Oscar submission from Ireland is the most nominated film at the British Independent Film Awards. Kneecap, a comedy about the homonymous Belfast hip-hop group, scored a grand total of 14 nods, including five for its director, Rich Peppiatt. In the second place, we find Rose Glass's Saint Maud follow-up, Love Lies Bleeding. A thriller flirting with body horror, it nabbed 12 honors. Coming in third, there's The Outrun which continues to grow its awards season profile. The Scottish drama scored nine nominations overall, but its best bet is probably Best Actress, where Saoirse Ronan is aiming for gold. If things go according to Sony Picture Classic's plans, the film might add an Oscar nomination to its bounty before the season's over…...

To say the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has become more international in recent years doesn’t quite paint a full enough picture of how tastes have changed. More accurately, the Academy has become more European, so when awards bodies like the British Independent Film Awards or the European Film Awards announce their nominations, take note.

Mikey Madison has the potential to make history at the 2025 Oscars in Best Actress with Neon’s “Anora.” At the age of 25, she is receiving universal praise for her portrayal of the title character, a Brooklyn stripper who gets into a whirlwind, impetuous marriage. Sean Baker‘s wild romantic dramedy is continuing to gain massive buzz since winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Madison is currently headlined at the top of the combined odds at Gold Derby to win Best Actress. Should it occur, she would be the ninth youngest Best Actress Oscar winner and the first since over a decade ago.

This impressive Saoirse Ronan performance in Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” wasn’t supposed to happen. Her role as Rita, a young mother protecting her son George (newcomer Elliott Hefferman) during the Nazi bombing of London in World War II could have gone to someone else. Because, in theory, Ronan was looking for a long, extended break.

“I had been gone from the 5th of January in Australia for about four months [filming ‘Foe‘], and then I went straight into ‘The Outrun’ and essentially prepping that and shooting that over about six months,” Ronan explains.

Awards season is underway, and the Gotham nominations are only a small blip for what could be on Oscar voters radar.
While any nomination (or win) from any industry group marks a chance at gaining momentum, it’s important to remember the Oscar punditry golden rule: It’s not about what everyone wants to win, it’s about what will win. And critics are not Oscar voters. Each Gothams category is determined by a set of five distinct critics and journalists from various disciplines.
The slate of feature film nominees, with Sean Baker’s hilarious and moving dramedy “Anora” leading the charge with four nods, is yet another compelling reason to think that the Neon-distributed Palme d’Or winner has what it takes to go all the way in the race. On the other hand, I wouldn’t read too much into the complete shutout of films such as...

John Magaro went from an extra on a Steven Spielberg film to leading his own movie about the same tragic events 20 years later.
Magaro has steadily built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, seamlessly transitioning between indie gems and major studio films such as “Not Fade Away” and “Past Lives.” But despite his steady rise in the industry, he remains grounded and deeply connected to the craft of acting, driven by a passion for storytelling and a dedication to exploring the complexities of each role.
In this episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Magaro discusses his latest project, Paramount Pictures’ “September 5” — a dramatic thriller about the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis. He also reflects on his early days in the business, which included an unexpected start as an extra in Steven Spielberg’s 2005 film “Munich,” a full-circle moment for him. Listen below.

“Anora,” a free-wheeling comedy about a sex worker who becomes entangled with the family of a Russian oligarch, led the Gotham Awards, picking up four nominations, including a nod for best feature.
“Nickel Boys,” the story of two African-American teens who are sent to an abusive reform school, and “I Saw the TV Glow,” a psychological horror film about high schoolers who begin to lose touch with reality, were close behind with three nods apiece.
“Nickel Boys” will vie for best feature alongside “Anora.” Other nominees for the top prize include the erotic drama “Babygirl,” the black comedy “A Different Man” and “Challengers,” a love triangle that unfolds against the backdrop of professional tennis. There were several notable omissions, with critically heralded films like “The Brutalist” and “Conclave” passed over for a best feature nomination. “The Brutalist” did earn two nominations for its star Adrien Brody and for the supporting turn of Guy Pearce.

The Best Actress Oscar race is looking more and more crowded as we get closer to the 2025 awards season, with numerous significant contenders in the running for those five slots. But if there’s one performance that’s surely going to make it in, it’s Saoirse Ronan in “The Outrun,” directed by Nora Fingscheidt. Why? Here are the Top 5 reasons …
1. Previous Oscar nominee.
At only 30 years old, Ronan has already received four Oscar nominations, and thus an acclaimed dramatic performance in her latest film will put her on the radar for many academy members. Her first nomination arrived in the Best Supporting Actress category for “Atonement” (2007) and then she was nominated in Best Actress for “Brooklyn” (2015), “Lady Bird” (2017), and “Little Women” (2019). Receiving as many Oscar noms as she has in such a short period of time shows that the academy is inclined to consider any new Ronan performance, and...

Believe it or not, Saoirse Ronan — a four-time Oscar nominee and one of Hollywood’s brightest stars — is just a cool girl from the Bronx.
Ronan was born in the U.S., moved to Ireland when she was three, and still splits time between there and her native land. And yes, she still votes in every election and can even one day run for president (if she chooses to). Beyond her acclaimed performances in films like “Lady Bird” and “Little Women,” Ronan remains deeply grounded. She recently married her longtime partner Jack Lowden, who celebrated his first Emmy nomination for “Slow Horses” (with Ronan secretly wishing for him to play James Bond). Nonetheless, she’s deeply committed to making the entertainment industry a safer, more supportive environment for young actors.

The 2025 Oscars will be televised live on ABC on Sunday, March 2 next year while the nominations will be announced a couple of months earlier — on January 17. There is a long way to go until then, of course, but, for us here at Gold Derby, it’s never too early to start thinking about the next Academy Awards. With that in mind, here is a list of contenders we think could be potential Best Picture competitors, as well as all the information you need to know about them. (Scroll down for our updated 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Picture.)
One of the early Oscar hopefuls, Greg Kwedar’s docudrama set in a prison, “Sing Sing,” debuted at the 2023 edition of TIFF. Another, Jesse Eisenberg‘s road trip “A Real Pain,” unspooled at Sundance in January. And Denis Villeneuve‘s “Dune: Part Two” was released in March. The latter was a sequel to...

Adrien Brody and Nicole Kidman are back in the Oscars race this year with their respective films “The Brutalist” and “Babygirl” from A24, both already making the rounds in the awards contention with strong festival premieres. The stars are now looking to claim victory in their respective categories of Best Actor and Best Actress, and if that sounds familiar, it’s because they both won these same races 22 years ago for “The Pianist” and “The Hours.” Can they strike gold for the second time and become the first duo in Oscars history to win the lead categories twice in the same years?
The year of 2002 was considered one of the most unpredictable Oscar seasons in multiple main categories. Starting with Kidman and “The Hours,” the Stephen Daldry movie took home Golden Globe Awards for Best Drama Actress and Best Drama Motion Picture, along with writing accolades for David Hare at...

As the major fall film festivals have concluded – and top regional festivals like ones held in Montclair, New Jersey, Middleburg, Virginia, and Savannah, Georgia, take turns at center stage – there is no better time to take stock in the awards race. This year’s Oscars field is one of the most wide-open in recent memory, with no clear frontrunner for Best Picture and several worthy films vying for the honor. That means what films and performances were honored during high-profile film festivals in Venice, New York, Toronto, and Telluride, Colorado – either with actual hardware or anecdotal praise and approval – is perhaps more important than ever.
Ahead is a breakdown of the fall festival award winners and honorees and what all this might mean for the race at hand.

The Substance, Coralie Fargeat’s darkly funny film about an aging Hollywood movie star, who is played unforgettably by Demi Moore, has been submitted for Golden Globes consideration as a musical/comedy, rather than a drama, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Ahead of the Globes’ Nov. 4 submission deadline, the classification of the Mubi release was the last remaining question mark among top-tier contenders. (Last week, THR shared the classifications for all of the others.) This is because there was debate even within the film’s and Moore’s camps about how the film should be entered.
On the one hand, The Substance a very disturbing horror flick, with levels of blood and gore that would make David Cronenberg blush. On the other hand, though, it’s a biting satire of a business in which youth and beauty are often prioritized above all else.
In the end, a deciding consideration may...

Saoirse Ronan's 'The Outrun': Nora Fingscheidt’s Portrait of Life’s Ocean of Chaos and Inevitability
Every year, there is a film that stands out from the rest. It isn’t occupied with fancy visual effects, grand stories, or even a showcase of artlike qualities. While these elements find their way into the film in subtle ways, ‘The Outrun’ (2024) manages to include an experimental structure, subdued character development, and a plethora of symbolic value with a story of addiction and the never ending struggle of trying with all heart to end it. A story that many people, especially women, will find relatability in. Helmed by rising director Nora Fingscheidt and acclaimed actress Saoirse Ronan in the lead role, ‘The Outrun’ manages to be the film of 2024 that so far succeeds in being artistic and stimulating while also a contemplative into the darker parts of life. Get ready to see a lot of Saoirse Ronan during awards season!
The 30-year-old actress, who already has four Oscar nominations to her name, could possibly get double nominations this year for her work in the movies Blitz and The Outrun.
Saoirse was joined by friend Ayo Edebiri at a CAA Screening and Reception for Blitz on Monday (October 14) in Los Angeles.
Variety just updated their Best Supporting Actress predictions for the 2025 Oscars and has Saoirse listed as the predicted winner in the category. The outlet also predicts she’ll get a Best Actress nomination for The Outrun.
Only 12 other people have ever been nominated for two acting awards in the same year with Scarlett Johansson being the most recent at the 2020 Oscars. 7 out of those 12 people won one of the awards.
Blitz will debut in select theaters on November 1 and will be available for streaming on Apple TV+ on November 22. Watch the trailer now!

Imagine standing in a seaweed field, battered by wind, kissed by the ocean, surrounded by an overpowering quiet. Now, place yourself at its center. That’s what Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Outrun” evokes: an intimate and intimidating isolation where memories swell, hijacking your thoughts, with the sound of the ocean crashing against the wind as your only companion.
When Amy Liptrot (journalist by profession and co-writer of this script) penned her memoir, I doubt she anticipated how deeply her experiences of addiction, recovery, and self-reflection would reverberate into something so achingly cinematic. She likely understood, though, that her birthplace, Orkney, is one of the most visually striking landscapes yet underutilized in cinema.
Orkney—a remote archipelago of some 70 islands in the northernmost reaches of Scotland—is home to rare wildlife and even scarcer human life. It’s here that Rona (Liptrot’s on-screen counterpart) returns to recover from years of alcoholism.
