Amazon Prime Video is the place to go for movies this month, with a plethora of original films as well as new library additions for just about every movie fan. The Emma Roberts-led original Space Cadet hits the streaming service aptly on the Fourth of July, for anyone looking for a fish-out-of-water style comedy. My Spy the Eternal City, the newest film in the Dave Bautista-led family action series also drops on July 18.

Action film fans are also in for a treat with recent films The Beekeeper and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning coming to Prime Video in July.

As far as TV shows go, the most notable addition this month is the adult animated series Sausage Party: Foodtopia, a continuation of the 2016 film Sausage Party.

Lionsgate is set to give the thriller Clear Cut, which stars Clive Standen of the Taken TV series, Tom Welling (Smallville), Stephen Dorff (Blade), and Alec Baldwin (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation), a theatrical, digital, and VOD release on July 19th – and with that date just a few weeks away, a trailer for the film has arrived online. Brian Skiba directed Clear Cut (formerly known as Cold Deck) from a screenplay by Joe Perruccio, who earns his first feature writing credit on this film. The Hollywood Reporter let us know that the story centers on Jack (Standen), who tries to leave his past behind him when he starts a logging job but finds that a team of criminals with a score to settle are out to kill him.

Vampires are taking a wacky bite out of summer. In Season 5 of FX and Hulu’s “What We Do In The Shadows,” Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) looks for a vampire who can give him the transformation that Nandor the Relentless has kept from him. But it may not go as planned. The beloved comedy, which takes a mockumentary look at four vampires living in Staten Island, returns on July 14.

Another highly anticipated return coming to Hulu in July is the latest season of long-running animated series “Futurama.” The show’s first four seasons aired on Fox from 1999 to 2003, it was then picked up by Comedy Central for three seasons from 2008 to 2013. Now, nearly a decade later, the Mike Judge-created series will return for the first half of the 20-episode Season 8 on July 24 with the original voice cast.

The 73rd annual Directors Guild of America Awards kicked off on Saturday evening. The awards honored the best directing in film and television of the past year.

This year, nominees Lee Isaac Chung for “Minari,” Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman,” David Fincher for “Mank,” Aaron Sorkin for “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and Chloé Zhao for “Nomadland” vied for the top directorial prize for film, with Zhao winning.

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced the television nominations for the 2020 DGA Awards on Monday, honoring “Ted Lasso,” “WandaVision,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” as examples of some of the finest directorial work that the medium has to offer.

Both Comedy and Drama categories saw complete turnover in nominees from 2019, with none of the series honored last year airing episodes during the window of eligibility in 2020. Therefore the celebration is guaranteed to get an injection of fresh blood, a welcome development with any awards body.

Curiously, the wide open field allowed for some surprising series to garner their first ever DGA nominations, including AMC’s “Better Call Saul” and Disney+’s “The Mandalorian.”

Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment has promoted Justin Wilkes, who heads the company’s documentary division, to be its chief creative officer.

Currently the head of Imagine Documentaries, Wilkes will now take on an expanded role and work closely with the heads of the film, TV, docs, branded entertainment, kids & family and international divisions, as well as Jax Media and Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions, in creating opportunities across the company. Wilkes will help the company focus towards a cohesive creative vision that will link to and guide Imagine’s strategic and business goals.

Currently the head of the prolific Imagine Documentaries division, Wilkes’ expanded role was announced internally on Monday by Howard and Grazer. He will now work closely with film, TV, docs, branded entertainment, kids and family, and international programming. Wilkes will also advise on Imagine’s stake in Tony Hernandez’s Jax Media and Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions.

Deadline has confirmed that Dan Silver, Disney+ VP of Nonfiction Originals is going to Netflix as Director of Documentary Feature Films.

He’ll report to Lisa Nishimura, VP Independent Film and Documentary Features at Netflix.

As part of a recent Disney restructuring, the Disney+ Unscripted Content and Production teams moved to Peter Rice’s Disney General Entertainment group under Gary Marsh.

At Disney+, Silver oversaw development on such unscripted series as The Imagineering Story, Howard, Encore, Muppets Now, Marvel’s 616 and the upcoming On Pointe.

Silver’s previous resume highlights while at Disney includes leading Marvel Entertainment’s platforms and content-new media as well as nonfiction content Marvel Live! Eat the Universe and the podcast Wolverine: The Long Night. Silver was an EP at ABC News Digital, Senior Director of Development at ESPN Films, and an EP on the movie The Queen of Katwe.

Forget about the 12 Days of Christmas – it’s the 12 Disney Plus Originals of Christmas this year. The Mouse House’s streaming service is releasing a bunch of new movies and TV series across the next few weeks, with the highlights being the original content that’s coming our way. Included in their number is a quartet of must-see pics, a short film, a couple of docuseries and a load of new episodes of hot D+ shows.

First up, after its debut on Premier Access, Mulan is finally being made available on Disney Plus for all subscribers at no extra cost. The holiday season is here and Pixar has a little gift for Disney+ subscribers.

After the animation studio’s next major effort was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the powers that be finally made the decision to release it on Disney’s streaming service. And that’s why you will now be able to watch Soul via Disney+ on Christmas Day. Soul stars Jamie Foxx as Joe Gardner – an inspiring jazz musician who finally gets his chance when his soul enters the Great Beyond.

Soul isn’t the only gift on Disney+ in December 2020. The sure-to-be-thrilling finale of The Mandalorian season 2 will arrive on Dec. 18. After those two beg exciting tentpoles, it’s pretty much business as usual for Disney+ this month (not that that’s necessarily a bad thing). An original movie of note, Safety, premieres on Dec. 11 and should at least be of interest to Clemson football fans.

In today’s TV news roundup, Disney Plus shared a trailer for its “On Pointe” docuseries, and Lifetime announced the premiere date for Season 12 of “Married at First Sight.”

Lifetime announced that “Married at First Sight” will return on Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. for a three-hour Season 12 premiere. The show introduces 10 single people are paired together and married, as the title suggests, at first sight. For the next eight weeks, the couples then live together as the show documents their experiences. At the end of the season, they choose whether or not they’d like to divorce or remain a married couple. Dec. 30 will see the matchmaking special, which introduces the cast and explains how the matchmaking process works. And on Jan. 6, the kickoff special shows behind-the-scenes insight into the selection process with a panel of experts. Chris Coelen, Eric Detwiler, Ally Simpson, Montre Burton, Toni Gallagher and Gena McCarthy executive produce the show.

Thanksgiving will be a holiday after all for the Ravens and Steelers, whose Thursday-night matchup has been postponed until Sunday, due to the Covid-19 outbreak with which the Baltimore NFL squad have been dealing.

Coming off the bench to populate NBC’s primetime Thanksgiving slate will be an encore of this year’s National Dog Show (which first airs Thursday at noon Et), followed by a rerun of The Wall (featuring the grandmother/granddaughter duo of Nellie and Taylor from Quarryville, Pa.).
