This is a feature-length version of a short film Zonad (2003) of the same name, written by the Carney brothers while still in college.
The camera used for filming had to be specially adapted to use different lenses. A result of this was that all the footage was filmed upside-down. This meant that monitors were normally also turned upside-down to make the picture the right way up. When reshoots were filmed, the camera used did not have to have these adjustments made, meaning all of this footage was normal.
The filming location for the village of Ballymoran was Avoca in County Wicklow, which was also the filming location for the town of Ballykissangel (1996) in the TV series of the same name. The local pub of Ballymoran is Fitzgerald's, a real pub formerly known as 'The Fountain Bar' which kept the sign and the name after becoming a tourist attraction through Ballykissangel (1996).
