Tabu "blindly" agreed to do A Suitable Boy, since it was directed by Mira Nair.
The famous "Red Sari" that tabu wears for her introduction scene was actually a last minute idea by the costume designer Arjun Bhasin.
The original 1993 book "A Suitable Boy" by Vikram Seth, which the series is based on, ran 1,349 pages, one of the longest books to be published in a single volume. Welsh screenwriter Andrew Davies condensed it into eight episodes (later six) for Nair's series.
The 'Praha' shoe company referenced in the show is a stand-in for real Czech-based company 'Bata', which enjoyed massive success in Asia and South America. Praha is the Czech word for the capital, Prague. The company was famous for its progressive employee relations, offering modern housing, education and cultural events. The company still exists. The actors portraying the two bosses are themselves Czech.
The mini-series was released on Netflix on 23rd October. The same day, Netflix's rival platform, Amazon Prime released the second season of its critically acclaimed show, Mirzapur. Both these shows have some common cast members. Rasika Duggal (Savita Kapoor), Vijay Verma (Rasheed), Sheeba Chaddha (Kabir's mother) and Kulbhushan Kharbanda (Kishan Chand Seth).
