Vidya Balan (“Kahaani”) and Shefali Shah (“Delhi Crime”), two of India’s finest actors, worked together for the first time in Suresh Triveni’s Amazon Prime Video India original “Jalsa.” The result is an acting masterclass.
The film is a tense social thriller where the lives of Balan’s Maya, a top journalist and Shah’s Rukhsana, Maya’s housekeeper, become inextricably linked together after a horrific incident.
Balan’s morally upright journalist wrestles with an ethical dilemma through the film. The actor initially turned down the film because she did not want to play someone who seemed morally ambiguous, but isn’t, and eventually the role’s challenges changed her decision.
“Maya is successful and she’s in a position of power and there is a certain aloofness to her demeanor,” Balan tells Variety. Balan worked on this aspect, and how the character would react in different situations, with Triveni.

Women-centric filmsWith the pandemic accelerating the growth of Ott in the past year, several women-centric films and movies with well-rounded female characters have come to the fore.Saradha UScreengrab/Amazon Prime VideoFor long, female characters in mainstream Indian cinema have been pushed to the side-lines. More often than not, the sole purpose of the female lead in romantic entertainers and action dramas was to support the male lead and help him accomplish his dreams. Among the host of reasons cited for women stars not taking centre stage was that they do not have the same kind of box-office openings as their male counterparts. Over-the-top (Ott) platforms are credited with changing this by creating a level-playing field for all actors. With the coronavirus pandemic accelerating the growth of streaming platforms, numerous women-centric projects have released on major Ott platforms like Disney Plus Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Sony Liv and Zee 5 in the past year.

The McLusky family will be back.
Paramount+ has handed the Jeremy Renner-fronted drama series Mayor of Kingstown, from Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, a second season.
The renewal is unsurprising given that Mayor of Kingstown is the nascent streamer’s second-most-watched original series behind Yellowstone prequel 1883 and is part of the Taylor Sheridan universe – the company’s most significant creative force.
Sheridan himself told Deadline last year about the second season of Mayor of Kingstown, which forms part of his cabal of shows, which also includes the Sylvester Stallone-fronted Kansas City, along with Bass Reeves, Land Man and Lioness, the fifth season of Yellowstone and a second season of 1883.
Mayor of Kingstown follows the McLusky family, power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan, where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry. Tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality, the series provides a stark look at...

This Young Justice: Phantoms review contains spoilers.
Young Justice Season 4 Episode 9
“Ondu!” thankfully pivots Young Justice: Phantoms away from the tedium of the Tigress arc and into one starring Zatanna. This change of pace freshens up the show significantly – it’s Young Justice’s first significant exploration of the magical side of the Dcu, and it mayyyyyybe hints at some big story points moving forward.
We start with a brief introduction and history of the Lords of Chaos and Order, the primal conflict between chaos and order that sprang from the creation of a disordered universe. It’s a universal origin story that doesn’t have The Hand (the hand of the Anti-Monitor observing the Universe and thus creating it), but otherwise this is pretty well established canon from the comics. This history is interspersed with Zatanna and her new squad – Khalid Nassour, Traci 13, and Mary Bromfeld (a semi-depowered Mary...

Young Justice Season 4 Episode 8
A series that once ended prematurely and was resurrected by fan passion should not spend so much time on maudlin navel gazing. And yet, here we are with Young Justice: Phantoms, where “I Know Why the Caged Cat Sings” spends most of its run time on infodumps that hint at a Much more interesting series of events and characters than the ones put on screen.
There are two highlights. The episode picks up more or less where the last left off – with a flashback to Artemis and Jade’s earlier days, and then a cut to Cheshire, Tigress, Onyx, Oracle’s invisible drone, and a still-shackled Orphan surrounded by Light goons. Oracle gives us one excuse for an infodump (Orphan needs more time to break out of her chains), so Tigress gets Shiva and Scandal to recap the last...

Young Justice Season 4 Episode 7
Getting off of Mars was the best thing to happen to Young Justice: Phantoms, and even though it returns there this week, the parallel structure of the episode combined with the show taking on a Huge story from the comics and making some pretty significant improvements to it, even if it doesn’t quite land in the end.
Plot-wise, not a ton happens this week. Miss Martian, her sister, and J’onn head back to Earth after M’gann cracks her brother’s skull a little and finds out he didn’t know the gene bomb was laced with kryptonite. And Tigress, Scandal, and Onyx (backed by Oracle) crash Santa Prisca to get Orphan out, ending up betrayed by Scandal, saved by Cheshire, and surrounded by the League. But it’s not really the plot that’s a big deal this week.

That's how it's done.
After a decent start, the past two episodes have truly upped the ante, as Stargirl Season 2 Episode 4 was another standout installment.
It was a tad exposition-heavy in the middle, but other than that, this episode, like the one before it, proved that Stargirl Season 2 is on a whole different level.
Part of what's beautifully working this season is the show's characters, particularly its villains, continue to operate in shades of gray.
The second season is less black and white than the first, and that point couldn't have been more apparent, thanks to the return of Sportsmaster and Tigress, played by Neil Hopkins and Joy Osmanski, respectively.
I'd almost forgotten how funny the marrieds are, and the actors, who have been promoted to series regulars for the show's upcoming third season, slipped seamlessly back into their old roles.
