The week of Jan. 15-21 was a big one for streaming.
Seven titles — three original series, three acquired shows and one movie — each drew more than 1 billion minutes of viewing for the week, the most that have ever hit that mark in the four-year history of Nielsen’s streaming charts. The previous high was six, which has happened four times (including two weeks earlier).
Kids’ favorite Bluey was the overall No. 1, with just over 1.5 billion minutes on Disney+. Reacher (1.23 billion) reclaimed the top spot among original shows from the prior week‘s leader, Fool Me Once, which fell by more than 50 percent to 1.06 billion minutes of watch time. Netflix’s heist movie Lift grew by 19 percent week-to-week, scoring 1.04 billion minutes.
Young Sheldon (1.16 billion minutes), Netflix’s docuseries American Nightmare (1.12 billion) and Grey’s Anatomy (1.09 billion) also hit the billion-minute mark.

Gary Gray and Kevin Hart’s “Lift” continued its No. 1 run on the English Films chart with 17.4 million views as Daniel Kaluuya’s dystopian directorial debut “The Kitchen” took third place with 7.7 million views and Adam Sandler’s “Leo” spent its 10th week among the top 10 with 2.9 million views.

Leave the World Behind has officially become one of Netflix’s most popular films of all time.
Sam Esmail’s thriller has been steadily moving toward the English Films list for several weeks and finally crossed the threshold during the week of January 22 to 30, debuting at No. 8 with 136.3M views in its first 52 days. Since Netflix now uses a 91-day premiere window to measure the success of its titles, the film still has plenty of time to cement itself higher on the list.
In fact, it’s likely that Leave the World Behind will jump quickly past The Mother, which is currently at No. 7 with just 136.4M views in its premiere window.
Also headed to the most popular list is Berlin, which has tallied 50.1M views in its first 31 days on Netflix — enough to get it to No. 10 on the Non-English language list. The Money Heist franchise now holds four...

Eli makes the best of his tumultuous childhood, despite the odds: His stepdad is a drug dealer, his mom lives with addiction, his elderly babysitter just served 25 years in jail, and his brother’s a poetic clairvoyant with selective mutism. As he faces the harsh realities of life — and the looming dangers that threaten his family — Eli tries to follow his heart and understand what it means to be a good person. Directed by Bharat Nalluri (Shantaram), Jocelyn Moorhouse (The Dressmaker), and Kim Mordaunt (The Rocket), and written by John Collee (Hotel Mumbai), the coming-of-age slash crime thriller series Boy Swallows Universe stars Travis Fimmel, Phoebe Tonkin, Emmy nominee Simon Baker, and Sophie Wilde. In the magical, genre-bending series Boy Swallows Universe, a 13-year-old boy battles the demons that haunt his family as he barrels toward adulthood. The show, based on the book of the same name by bestselling author Trent Dalton, was inspired by Dalton’s own atypical childhood in Brisbane, Australia. The coming-of-age story with a crime-thriller edge, written by John Collee (Hotel Mumbai), swiftly landed in Netflix’s Global Top 10 after its Jan. 11 premiere.

‘The Repair Shop’ Outfit Ricochet Signs Damon Pattison
The Repair Shop outfit Ricochet has signed up British indie vet Damon Pattison as its Creative Director. Reporting to MD Joanna Ball, Pattison will be responsible for developing, pitching and securing new commissions across all genres for the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outfit. Pattison, who replaces Katy Thorogood, most recently ran Banijay-backed Beyond’s UK production arm but it was shuttered last year. He previously worked for BBC Studios and Keo Films, and set up Lucky Day Productions in 2007, which was sold to Zodiak Media Group. Ricochet makes smash BBC series The Repair Shop along with the likes of Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped and Discovery’s Woodland Workshop. “Damon’s experience, energy and creativity, is precisely what we need in a Creative Director,” said Ball.

Entering the world of Boy Swallows Universe is like stepping into a whirlwind of genres, emotions, and uniquely Australian storytelling. Our list is a mixed bag of TV gems—crime thrillers, teen dramas, and captivating Australian series—all carefully chosen to deliver that same adrenaline rush and narrative complexity (maybe not so much) that made Boy Swallows Universe a standout. I’m no expert in “Boy TV,” but I’ve tried my best to come up with shows that each promise a unique flavor while stirring the same sense of anticipation and thrill that probably got your blood pumping while watching Boy Swallows Universe. Do you sometimes feel like writing down every second piece of dialogue while watching great TV or movies? That’s exactly the feeling I would use to describe Netflix’s latest coming-of-age show that takes us Down Under. Adapted from the debut YA novel of the same name by author Trent Dalton, the show is an almost fantasy-like crime thriller, but with children. Picture Boyhood, but in the form of a TV show, with a lot of violence and none of the slow burn. I suppose it’s an Australian thing to be uniquely imaginative with crime stories that are almost surreal while simultaneously implying that they are inspired by real-life events. I mean, Shantaram does happen to be one of the more exciting pieces on my bookshelf, and I couldn’t help but make comparisons between these two pieces of work. Not merely because they hail from the pens...

Boy Swallows Universe is one of the best shows I’ve watched this year. Yeah, I know it’s the 13th of January, which is why I can say that. However, I think it’ll still end up on an end-of-year “best shows” list. It’s a fantastic coming-of-age series that follows Eli Bell (what a cool name though), a 13-year-old boy who lives in the crime-ridden town of Darra, Brisbane, in the early 80s. Eli’s story is told from his point of view through some letters he writes to his prison inmate friend Alex Bermuda in an almost autobiographical fashion. It’s a convoluted, heightened-emotions kind of plot that is told in a very exciting and fresh way. The show begins with Eli’s stepfather, Lyle, being taken away by some terrifying-looking criminals. Lyle has been selling heroin for a massive drug gang in Darra; however, they’ve...

Adapted from Trent Dalton’s 2019 novel, Boy Swallows Universe is a sprawling coming-of-age story about a precocious teen, Eli Bell (Felix Cameron), surrounded and raised by a motley crew of outlaws and outcasts in a rough suburb of Brisbane, Australia, in the 1980s. Eli’s loyal older brother, Gus (Lee Tiger Halley), hasn’t uttered a word since he was eight, and their step-father, Lyle (Travis Fimmel), is a small-time heroin dealer. Also milling about town are Slim (Bryan Brown), a convicted murderer, and Teddy (Ben O’Toole), an associate of Lyle’s with a soft spot for Eli’s loving but gullible mother, Frankie (Phoebe Tonkin).
Each of the show’s seven episodes depicts a different chapter of Eli’s colorful adolescence, a structural device that allows Boy Swallows Universe to cover ground at a lively pace. No event is dwelt on too long before, true to the reality of teen life,...

The 2023-2024 primetime television season looked nothing like previous years, with reruns, unscripted shows, and international imports populating broadcast networks’ lineups. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, though undeniably justified, took quite a toll on all the networks. Fortunately, the strikes have been settled, production has begun on nearly every new and returning series, and the midseason January lineup hints that things are slowly returning to normal.
