Exclusive: Tika Sumpter (Sonic the Hedgehog 3) has co-written and is starring in a new Tyler Perry rom-com for Amazon MGM Studios, Deadline can exclusively reveal. She comes to the project after collaborating with Perry on films like A Madea Christmas and shows like The Haves and the Have Nots.

Currently in production, the film known for the moment as Unt. Sisters in Italy will feature a supporting cast including Bresha Webb (Run the World), Egot winner Whoopi Goldberg (The Color Purple), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters franchise), Godfrey (Regular Black), Giulio Berruti (Downhill), Edmond Laryea (FBI), Sarayu Blue (Expats), and Justin Chatwin (Reagan). Pic will mark Perry’s final effort under a four-picture deal with the studio, announced in the fall of 2022.

The story follows two estranged sisters who, after their mother’s death, are called to Italy to discover that their mom owned a bed and breakfast in the Italian countryside.

Chief Keef, a pioneer in the inception and rise of drill music, is getting his own documentary, Variety can exclusively report. Kenya Barris’ Khalabo Ink Society is partnering with Lyrical Lemonade and Cole Bennett to chronicle the Chicago native’s trajectory.

The film, directed by Bennett and produced by Barris and Khalabo’s Jeremy Allen, will capture Keef’s rise, hiatus and recent return to the city. It will examine Chicago’s influence on Keef’s life and career, as well as his impact on the city’s music scene and beyond.

Other notable players in the untitled documentary include Lyrical Lemonade’s Jake Millan and Krista Worby, who will executive produce the project alongside Khalabo Ink Society’s Emilie Geneve and Idris Dykes. Keef previously had a documentary titled “The Story of Sosa: The Movie” in the works at Apple Music in 2017, though the film never materialized.

Actor Mark-Paul Gosselaar was a teen heartthrob on the NBC sitcom Saved by the Bell. “Grown-ish” is getting ready to say goodbye, and Et is exclusively debuting the trailer for the Freeform series’ upcoming final season!

The two-parter sixth season picks up right where season 5 left off, welcoming back franchise star Marcus Scribner as he reprises his role as Andre Johnson Jr. (aka Junior) for the final time. It’s a year of making big decisions for Andre, from deciding on a major to figuring out his relationship with Annika (Justine Skye). Meanwhile, Zoey (Yara Shahidi) is seeking a chance to revive her defunct clothing line as Aaron (Trevor Jackson) and Doug (Diggy Simmons) continue to seek balance and success in their post-grad adventures.

Exclusive: Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm, a rising writer-producer coming to television from the world of theater, has signed with Artists First for management.

Chisholm most recently created, exec produced and served as co-showrunner for AMC’s comedic sci-fi series Demascus, produced by Gran Via. While his original pilot was picked up to series and shot its entire first season, it was one of a number of projects axed at the network amid a push for cost-cutting.

Exclusive: Christina Anthony (Mixed-ish), Ray Santiago (Ash vs. Evil Dead) and Melanie J. Newby (Halt & Catch Fire) are set as series regulars opposite Amber Ruffin in NBC comedy pilot Non-Evil Twin from Universal Television.

Written by Ruffin and Kenny Smith, the multi-camera pilot stars Ruffin playing the dual roles of twin sisters Angie and Amber. Angie is the ruthless CEO of AngieCorp, who is as heartless as she is rich. Angie instills fear in everyone she meets, except her caring sister, Amber, who only sees the good in her. Amber—a pushover when it comes to Angie—is forced to step in as the leader of AngieCorp, a Fortune 500 company, despite knowing little about business and even less about the way her sister has been running the corporation.

Anthony will play Christina, Angie’s assistant/acolyte who believes she’s the smartest person in the room and easily annoyed by others.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has secured rights to Aaron Foley’s debut novel Boys Come First, with plans to develop the property for television, tapping Chuck Hayward (Ted Lasso) to pen the pilot and exec produce the series.

Field Trip will produce the show, developed under their overall deal with Amazon Studios, with the company’s co-founders Will Graham and Hailey Wierengo also set to exec produce alongside their VP of Development, Stephanie Dietz. And Deadline understands that Hayward is also in discussions to serve as showrunner.

“Grown-ish” will end with its upcoming Season 6 at Freeform.

The news comes around two months after it was announced the show had been renewed for a sixth season. The final season of the series, which is a spinoff of the ABC comedy “Black-ish,” will air in two parts. The first part will premiere this summer, while the second will air in 2024. The show will air its 100th episode during Season 6.

Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish will end with its previously announced sixth season on Freeform. In making the announcement Wednesday, the Disney-owned basic cable network said the final season will be split into two parts, with the first half airing at a date to be determined this summer and the final episodes airing sometime in 2024.

Anthony Anderson is set to star in the ABC comedy pilot “Public Defenders,” Variety has learned. In addition, Liz Astrof has joined the pilot as showrunner while Randall Einhorn has signed on to direct.

The single-camera pilot, which was originally picked up at ABC in January, hails from writer Eddie Quintana.

The official logline states: “Up to their earholes in student loan debt, four inexperienced public defenders work tirelessly to keep their clients out of jail. Along the way, they have to rely on each other to navigate their first defendants, the absurd court system, and the copy machine that always jams.”

“Grown-ish” has been renewed for Season 6 at Freeform. In addition, Variety has learned exclusively that Craig Doyle will take over as showrunner on the new season.

Doyle steps in as showrunner on the “Black-ish” spinoff for the team of Zakiyyah Alexander and Courtney Lilly, who became the co-showrunners on the series going into its fifth and current season. Doyle has been with the show since it began, first as a co-executive producer before being elevated to executive producer in Season 2. Exclusive: The Lionsgate Television Group has signed an overall deal with Rachelle Williams-BenAry, who served as showrunner and executive producer on the second season of hit comedy Run the World, produced by Lionsgate for Starz.

Williams-BenAry was also co-showrunner and executive producer on the second season of Lionsgate’s Love Life for HBO Max. Under the terms of the new agreement, Williams-BenAry will write and produce scripted content.

Sundance Institute and Hartbeat have selected Mayanna Berrin, Kiana Butler Jabangwe and Danielle Solomon as the recipients of the “Women Write Now” fellowship for Black female comedic screenwriters.

Logan Browning, Tika Sumpter and Nicole Byer have signed on to direct three short films written by the fellows, which will debut at a special exhibition during the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Additionally, the fellows have been awarded a one-year first-look deal with Hartbeat, the multi-platform media company founded by Kevin Hart. Script mentors will include Leigh Davenport (“Run the World”), Kay Oyegun (“This Is Us”), and Yamara Taylor (“Black-ish”). The company’s Head of Film, Candace Cherry Wilson and its VP of TV Development Tiffany Brown will serve as creative advisors at the program’s career development lab.

A new iteration of the beloved TV show “Ally McBeal” is said to be in the works.

The new series will be a sequel rather than a reboot and will focus on a young Black woman who joins the law firm from the original “Ally McBeal” after she graduates from law school, according to Deadline. The lead character will reportedly be the daughter of McBeal’s one-time roommate, D.A. roommate Renée Raddick (Lisa Nicole Carson).

As for Ally McBeal herself, Calista Flockhart, her involvement in the project is currently unclear. Per Deadline, “Flockhart has been approached to reprise her title role from the original in some capacity and to executive-produce the followup.” However, the outlet added that “a decision on her potential involvement likely won’t be made until a script has been written.”

This isn’t the first time talks of Flockhart returning to TV as McBeal have made headlines.

Kenya Barris is taking the yellow brick road to Oz for Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Wizard of Oz” remake.

The creator of “Black-ish” is set to write and direct the reimagining, which is completely separate from New Line’s previously announced retelling of “The Wizard of Oz.” New Line’s version will be directed by Nicole Kassell (“Watchmen”) and is described as “fresh take” on Dorothy and the Land of Oz. Any specifics about Barris’s version have been kept under wraps.

Both projects are based on L. Frank Baum’s beloved book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” which has been retold on the big and small screen many times over the years, the most famous being the classic 1939 musical starring Judy Garland. It follows a Kansas farm girl named Dorothy who is swept away by a tornado and finds herself — and her dog Toto — in the colorful Land of Oz.

Snoop Dogg and Kenya Barris are partnering up with MGM on the upcoming comedy feature “The Underdoggs.” Snoop Dogg will star in and co-produce the project.

Described as “The Bad News Bears” meets youth football, the film revolves around former NFL superstar Jaycen “2Js” Jenning (Snoop Dogg), who agrees to coach a youth football team in hopes of jumpstarting his career after he has a run-in with the law.

Charles Stone will direct. The script, based on an original pitch by Snoop Dogg and producing partner Constance Schwartz-Morini, is written by Danny Segal and Isaac Schamis, whose previous work includes Barris projects “Grown-ish” and “#BlackAF”.

Written by Oz Rodriguez (Saturday Night Live) and Lemon Andersen (She’s Gotta Have It), Uptown Bodega centers on Tati Cruz who has inherited her father’s old Bodega and vows to keep the business booming in a fast-changing Nueva York with the help of her husband, three kids, and Rocky the bodega cat.

Veteran comedy showrunner Peter Murrieta, who is supervising the script, Rodriguez and 3 Arts’ Greg Walter executive produce the project, which is a co-production between HBO Max and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, where Rodriguez is under an overall deal.

Netflix is working on a new single-camera comedy, Dumped, from writer Heather Flanders (Mixed-ish), director Liz Friedlander (The Rookie), manager-producer Robyn Meisinger (Love in the Time of Corona), and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. According to Deadline, the streamer has opened up a writers room for the show, which is part of the Netflix development process as it does not do pilots. Dumped remains in development with an eye toward a potential straight-to-series order. The half-hour comedy revolves around a hopeless romantic and her best friends who find themselves playing amateur detectives when they investigate her recent ex. This snooping soon sends the group of friends falling down a rabbit hole of lies, deceit, and danger. Flanders, known for her work on Paramount+’s iCarly, ABC’s Mixed-ish, and Fox’s The Cool Kids, wrote the script on spec before Meisinger brought it to Kapital, who attached Friedlander as director.
